Bridging Word/Void with Shannara

Terry Brooks revisits the world of his greatest work: The Word and the Void. That original trilogy was set in a modern day United States where there are demons working for the Void trying to turn humans to acts of evil to twist the world to be a more violent, dangerous, and lost place. John Ross, a Knight of the Word, fought daily against visions of the future that he had to try to prevent. Ross's visions were of events that could happen in his own lifetime and for all of Ross's success, all he did was delay the inevitable. Armageddon's Children is set some eighty years after Angel Fire East and the world is a ruined place and things are only fixing to get worse. Pollution is out of control, a nuclear war occurred, the humans which are "safe" live in compounds (like Seattle's Safeco Field) warded off against the outside world. Those compounds are all under siege and they are falling day by day until there will be nowhere left to run or hide. In Seattle there are gangs of children calling themselves Tribes. Adults have failed them and street children are not allowed in Compounds so they must survive by becoming their own families and looking out for each other. Humans who had been caught outside for too long and who somehow survived drinking radioactive water and eating off of the poisoned land have mutated. This is our world, only broken. This could be our future.

Terry Brooks works on four storylines in Armageddon's Children. One storyline is of a Tribe of children in Seattle called the Ghosts. The Ghosts are led by an older boy named Hawk who is just trying to keep his family alive. It is through Hawk's eyes that we see what his world and our world has become. Two storylines have to do with the two known remaining Knights of the Word: Logan Tom and Angel Perez. Logan Tom has been sent by The Lady to find the Gypsy Morph somewhere in the Northwest. The Gypsy Morph is a being of great power and magic and which we know was somehow born to Nest Freemark after Angel Fire East. Before I mention the last two storylines I need to mention what had been previously rumor and conjecture. Up until the announced publication of this novel it was suggested that the Word / Void Trilogy could be the world before The Great Wars that ruined the world and slowly evolved into the Four Lands that we know in the Shannara novels. This was always a great theory. In interviews before the publication of Armageddon's Children Terry Brooks finally admitted that this was true. That in his next trilogy he would start bridging Word / Void with Shannara. So, that brings us to storyline number three: Angel Perez. Angel Perez is another Knight of the Word who has been fighting to rescue as many children as possible before compounds are overrun by the demons and Once-Men. She is given a new mission: to find the Elves and to help them find some Elfstones. Now, elves have nothing to do with Word / Void, but have everything to do with Shannara. And that brings us to storyline number four: The Elves. We actually find out about the elves before we find out about Angel Perez and when they appear and they mention the Ellcrys, longtime readers of Terry Brooks knows without question that the two series have now been linked. The Ellcrys has given one of the Chosen a mission: to find the seeking elfstones to located the Loden Elfstone to carry the Ellcrys out of the Oregon woods whole. This may not make sense to readers who have not read Elfstones of Shannara or The Elf Queen of Shannara, but Brooks makes these concepts fairly clear even to newer readers of the series.

So, that's what Armageddon's Children is about. Is it any good? Yes. The more Brooks stays to the feeling of Word / Void the better the book is. I know that we're bridging to a more traditional fantasy series, but he gives better description and characterization and storytelling when he is working in the more natural setting of Word / Void. There are references a plenty to the previous trilogy and several references to things we know from Shannara and even an explanation of why there are demons walking the land considering the nature of what we know of the Ellcrys. The primary complaint is that this is the first book of a trilogy so Brooks spends 350 pages setting stuff up and giving us some action and storytelling, but nothing is resolved. He ends with a cliffhanger (almost literally) and rolls right into Volume Two of this trilogy. Brooks does not tell a complete story. Let me contrast this with his four book Heritage of Shannara series. Each book told a complete story while still building to the larger story of the series. That is what is missing here. It is not a book that can stand alone, but because of the ties to the excellent Word / Void series it is a harkening back to when Terry Brooks was writing strong fantasy with solid description. Brooks intentionally stepped away from that, publishing a book a year and desiring to write faster, more action packed novels rather than longer works of greater quality. He sacrificed quality for quantity even though his sales did not decrease. This is a step back towards some of that quality, though I know that is because he is forced to be more descriptive about the world as it has changed from Angel Fire East and is nothing like The Four Lands. This book is designed as a book where new readers can step in and not feel lost because they haven't read 20 books on both sides of the timeline but will also reward longtime readers. Armageddon's Children is a success in for both groups of readers and while not perfect it is a strong work in the catalog of Terry Brooks.

Tofu that tastes good? YUP!

I originally borrowed this book and after trying a few of the recipes, just had to have it. I couldn't believe that tofu could taste this good! Anyone can use this book and even disquise tofu so your "No I would never eat that friends" can be tricked into changing their minds! Give it a shot!

Great easy recipes

I really like this cookbook. The recipes taste great and are often acceptible for non vegetarians as well. I love that they are easy to make and use ingredients that I usually have on hand.

There are some minor annoyances with the bi-cultural aspect of the cookbook. The author tries to make the book suitable for both British and American English speakers, and this results in 1 chili (chilli) etc. On the other hand: I really like the fact that the author gives both metric and imperial measurements and says that you can use them interchangeably. I like to measure some things in tablespoons/cups and other things in grams. This cookbook is the only one that lets me do that.

This is truly a recipe book, not a book that goes into great detail about nutrition and vegetarianism. The recipes, with the exception of the desserts, are healthy, using whole foods. You can usually easily reduce the oil and/or salt to make them even more healthy. I do wish the author would use more vegetables, or give options to make meals richer in vegetables by listing possible vegetable side dishes.

I highly recommend this cookbook if you want to use more tofu in your diet. If ingredients like "sea salt" put you off and you do not think to just use regular salt instead, this cookbook may not be for you though.

Great book!

I found this book at a used book store for $2...best $2 I've ever spent. I enjoyed many of the recipes in this cookbook. I use it weekly!
The author divides her recipes into sections by region, for example, there is a "mexican", "Indian", and "british/american" section. I found the division helpful when planning my meals. Also there are desserts!
The author suggests sides to accompany some dishes as well, to make the meal more substantial.
The only downside I saw was there were some items of which I was unfamiliar, such as yeast extract (Marmite) and nutritional yeast. I've since learned how to substitute for such items, as I am not vegan and do enjoy cheese (which is what she uses nutritional yeast for). Also she talks about soy products a lot...I usually just substitute with dairy (soy milk=regular milk).
The author is British (?), so she refers to some items by different names; however she does make a good attempt at translating for us.
Overall, I am pleased with this cookbook and would recommend it to anyone curious about tofu or (like me) just wanting an alternative to an all-meat all the time dinner. My husband is a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy, and even he will eat a majority of these recipes.
And if you or someone you know is vegan, this would be the perfect book as the recipes are completely animal-free.

Mind Blowing New Reading of the Gospels

Not for the timid or insecure.

I can't think of another book about the Bible that combines such modesty with such audacity.

Using new historicist techniques and assumptions, Clarke Owens offers us a series of close readings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Acts denuded of doctrinal overlays. The result is a unexpected new look at Biblical texts previously rendered opaque by centuries of theologically motivated readings.

I was surprised and enlightened at every turn. Owens' approach reveals hitherto disguised fictional and rhetorical techniques. And as a result, old lines suddenly become fresh again--freed from their presumed trite and clichéd meanings.

At first I tried to defend myself against the originality of this book by questioning its approach, but its calm, patient method and critical exactitude was too convincing and productive. There are no axes grinding here. This is not a new theory or doctrine being applied. Rather Clarke Owens has attempted something so rare as to be utterly astonishing: he has tried to read the Gospels free from religious presumption as texts in their own right.

This is "close reading" at its contemporary finest applied to the foundational texts of Western Civilization.

The essay format provides more hermeneutical bang for the buck and saves the book from being too long.

Son of Yahweh has made me rethink and reconsider many of the things I thought I already knew about the New Testament.

Interesting approach

Owens’ introduction of literary criticism into the study of the origins of Christianity feels like being led into a refreshing oasis. The main part of his essay, the discussion of the four canonical gospels, of Acts and of the famous “abomination of desolation” sentence, offers a lot of original observations, but most of all the paragraph on apocalyptic writing (the ‘Error 3’-section of the first chapter) is a good read. It is of an exceptional clarity, the best discussion of the subject I have ever read.

This doesn’t mean that I follow Owens’ main thesis that the Gospels are fictional accounts that only intend to describe the catastrophe of 70 CE. While reading I couldn’t free myself of the impression that Owens doesn’t take his own thesis all too serious, that he sees it more like an intellectual game. A game he plays very well.

In his conclusion Owens asks the reader to unblock his/her imagination, to abandon an orthodox or doctrinal reading of the Gospels, and to question the incomprehensible gap between the events related in the Gospels and their writing down. Here and elsewhere in his book he suggests that the Gospels are an allegory of the destruction of the Jewish nation. This may be so in part, but I think we should consider – using our unblocked imagination – that a real life Jesus was active during the war, that he preached and organized the revolution in Galilee, fled to Jerusalem, participated in the capture (‘cleansing’) of the Temple, helped his depressed friend Eleazar son of Ananias, talked with Nakdimon bar Gourion, was hungry during the siege and therefore cursed a fig tree without fruits, was crucified and rose again. Then also the “abomination of desolation” or “summit of humiliation” becomes concrete as the erection of the divinized standards of the Roman legions in front of the burning Temple, Titus’s entrance into the Holy of Holies and his acclamation as imperator by his troops.

Good analysis, but I wanted either more or less.

I really enjoyed the first few chapters where Owens lays out all his gripes with tutors treating the gospels as history or biography. I have a similar list of complaints about various other authors!

However, he then says "so let's read them as novels instead!" And my first reaction is "wait a moment, there's no evidence that anyone read the gospels as novels!" As far as my own research goes, the only known use of the gospels was for reading in church, for teaching and liturgical purposes, along with (maybe) public readings for evangelical purposes.

So after a few weak chapters where not a lot is added (for me) his conclusion includes a line that pretty much admits they were never written as novels, nor were read as novels.

In the end about half this book is worth reading, but I expect different people will enjoy different parts of it. Check out a more extensive review in a series of blog posts at vridar: [...]

This story is a dark sci-fi, post-apocalyptic erotic romance. That has to be understood for the story to be enjoyed, and even then, this won't be for everyone. I surprisingly enjoyed it. While there was a bit too much sex and sexual tension for my taste, the world that Knox described was creative, easy to visualize, and dark, creating an absolutely perfect setting. Compared to the world in which they live, the characters feel a little flat, but this could be, in part, due to their sex drive running most of the show.

An interesting story with an inventive resolution. Everything fitted together well and left me satisfied with the story as a whole. Also, I loved the little comment about the bees. Brilliant and subtle.

Strengths
The world creation was very impressive in this story. In the short amount of time, the author painted a dark picture, used dialogue to fill in knowledge gaps, and provided all the necessary information without bogging down the story. The visuals, while sparsely provided, were enough to help the reader envision the world, relying more on reader experience and intuition than description. Definitely the strongest part of the story.

While I found parts of the ending a little too much, for the most part the resolution and the plot leading up to it were excellent. I didn't know where things were going and I liked the journey we went on while being taken there.

Weaknesses
A little too sex heavy for me, but that is preference. However, it did detract from character development a little as both men seemed to think with their little heads too much to create more in depth realizations. Still, it wasn't so much sex that I rolled my eyes, and most of it was glossed over, giving the feeling of lots of even more sex without bombarding the reader with scene after scene of it in hot nano-infected detail.

When I read m/m, I like the men hard. I like my science fiction hard, too. If it's offered as romance, I like the relationships developed. So I was not very happy with this story, because one out of three isn't enough.

From the opening scene, where Rider has been captured and bound under the assumption that he's an infected spy, come to suck what's left of unchanged humanity into the "hive," the sexual come-ons are fast and thick. "The infected are always ready to f***," because exchange of bodily fluids passes the nano-virus around. An insane AI has created the nanos as a way of subjugating humanity for its own unexplained purposes. Rider is marked as infected but has thrown off the infection, or so he'd have Sutton, his interrogator, believe, although he has the residual need to nail everything standing. Sutton feels the draw but he's supposed to be immune to the wiles of the infected.

This is one of the few human enclaves left, but the lights are still on, the water's still running, and the med-techs have enough of a lab inside the Tower of London to be able to run tests. There must be a limit to what they can do, because the humans test-f*** (author's term) such spies. The humans have fought very hard to survive but perform this sort of suicide mission regularly, which made no sense to me at all. Once Rider convinces everyone he's really not infected, just a pheromone-shedding, bragging sex machine, they release him into the general population, and draft him for a suicide defense when the compound is about to be overrun by the infected.

Time spent waiting to die is always best spent having sex, so Rider and Sutton do. This provides the answer to the main problem, although now Sutton is now so drawn to Rider that his previous immunity is gone completely, as is his refractory period. In terms of the plot, this is both a good thing and nearly required.

There was very little consistency in the science fiction aspect; while I don't need to know why exactly the AI embarked on this experiment, I do think its methods needed to be internally consistent. The nano-viruses behaved like viruses at times, but then behaved like programmable devices at other times, and flipped back and forth as convenient, giving the infected some strange abilities and quirks. Frankly, it all seemed like several s/f buzzwords had been cobbled together to provide an excuse for Rider to talk about everyone he'd had sex with, including one of Sutton's long term lovers, who was used as a test-f***. Rider has no compunction about needling Sutton about Annabel or the others, nor about discussing a long line of willing infected partners. Rider actually has very few lines that are not directly discussing sex he's had or would like to have.

Once the breakthrough regarding the infected has been achieved, it's straight to "I love you," for Sutton, which is the more astounding jump. Nothing Rider has done is remotely loveable, and he's served to expose all the cracks in Sutton's existing relationship, which is a little on the kinky side but nothing too outrageous in a stressed environment like the human enclave. Sutton is, BTW, still actively engaged in this relationship when Rider enters the enclave. Sutton's response to having this pointed out is to declare love for the pointer, who can provide mind-blowing sex. Hmm.

Unfortunately, in terms of romance, there is no relationship development; in terms of science fiction there is no consistency, though the fast pace tends to obscure this. Read strictly as erotica, it's okay but heavier on the sex talk than the sex acts. I honestly have no idea what group of readers would find this a wholly satisfactory story.

A great start!

I have recently started seeking male/male romance novels. I have enjoyed romance novels in general and thought as a gay man with interests there and a great love of science fiction why not get Amazon to search for me and find a book that encompassed both likes. This book came back in the search. Due to price and summary I bought and read it.
I enjoyed it. It was kind of short and did not really flesh the characters out or their evolving relationship but I found myself wanting to know more, more about the situation this society finds itself in, more about the main characters past, more about what happens after the end! Just more! It was quite pleasant to find a male/male main character book that was not a non-ending sex scene. It may have lacked in flesh but it left me wanting to know more. I do hope I get to know more about these characters and this world they live in!

"There is a definite need for a comprehensive consolidation of material on VHF viruses, especially in light of an elevated level of concern globally for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. This book fills that need. Although I have a few concerns about the overall quality of the writing in a few chapters, I can appreciate that styles may differ given the number of contributing authors. I would not consider the book to be a 'rapid overview' as the editors describe it, but a comprehensive and rather complex textbook. As a result, the audience may be limited to advanced practice clinicians and more seasoned researchers. Weighted numerical score: 80 - 3 stars."

About the Author

Dr. Sunit K. Singh is a scientist and leads a research group in the area of neurovirology and inflammation biology at the prestigious Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, India. His main areas of research interest are emerging and re-emerging viral infections, neurovirology, inflammation biology, and immunology. Dr. Singh has received several awards, including the Skinner Memorial Award, Travel Grant Awards, NIH-Fogarty Fellowship, and Young Scientist Award. He is associated with several international journals of repute as an associate editor and editorial board member.

Dr. Daniel Růžek is a head of the Department of Virology and head of the Research Group on Emerging Viral Infections at the Veterinary Research Institute, Brno, Czech Republic; a research scientist at the Institute of Parasitology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic; and an assistant professor in the University of South Bohemia, České Budějovice, Czech Republic. His primary field is virology with a research emphasis on vector-borne viruses, especially tick-borne encephalitis virus, Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus, dengue virus, and West Nile virus. Take a medieval Arab kingdom, add a ruler who wants to update the kingdom's educational facilities, include an English research psycholinguist (an Oxford classmate of the ruler) invited to pursue his work on animal communication, and then add a touch of chaos in Dinah, a chimpanzee who has begun to learn to form coherent sentences with plastic symbols. When a murder is committed in the oil-rich marshes, Dinah is the only witness, and Morris has to go into the marshes to dis-cover the truth. The Poison Oracle is a novel of its time that exposes in the everyday language people use humanity's thinking and unthinking cruelties to one another and to the animals with whom we share this earth.

Peter Dickinson has twice received the Crime Writers' Association's Gold Dagger. His novels include Death of a Unicorn, A Summer in the Twenties, and many more. He lives in England and is married to the novelist Robin McKinley.

One of Peter Dickinson's earlier books but still brilliant

Run don't walk to buy anything that Peter Dickinson has written. This is one of his earlier books but is still brilliant. The protagonist is busy trying to teach a chimpanzee to communicate at the behest of an old college friend who happens to be the sheikh of a small but oil rich kingdom. Dickinson is one of the brightest but also most elegant of writers. With a delicate sense of irony and a smidgen of dry humour. One of the great things about the Kindle is how it has made it possible to read books that were published many years ago and which have sunk from sight. Dickinson was never terribly popular over here but is well worth reading. A similar recommendation applies to Lionel Davidson, whose out of print books are only now being republished.

Oh, and for those who hate Sara Paretsky, she has absolutely nothing to do with the book, except for an excruciating interview with the author.
