Odyssey, by Walter Mosley

In this gripping and provocative eBook original novel celebrated  bestselling author Walter Mosley explores the mind of an African-American man who is forced to re-examine his most closely held beliefs about race and about himself.

Sovereign James wakes up one morning to discover that he’s gone blind.
Sovereign’s doctors can't find anything wrong with him, nor does he remember any physical or psychological trauma. Unless his sight returns, Sovereign has reached the end of his 25-year career in human resources. A couple of weeks later he is violently mugged on the street. His sight briefly, miraculously returns during the attack: for a few seconds, he can see as well as hear a young female bystander’s cries of distress. Now he must grapple with two questions: What caused him to lose his vision—and, perhaps more troubling, why does violence restore it? As Sovereign searches for the woman he glimpsed, he will come to question everything he valued about his former life.

An odyssey that is fun and entertaining
By Read-A-Lot
If odyssey is defined by a long and eventful journey, then this novel is aptly titled. The adventure here belongs to Sovereign James, a HR manager who has been implementing a secret social engineering project designed to empower Black people to the point where they can take over the company. The novel opens with Sovereign meeting with a psychiatrist, because he has suffered from hysterical blindness. There is no apparent physical component to this, but for the past 9 weeks, Sovereign hasn't been able to see anything. He has been completely blind.

And through Sovereign's meetings with the Dr., in addition to his own private thoughts reminiscing about his life, we learn a great deal about how he assesses himself. Though he has lost eyesight he has gained tremendous insight. He takes an inventory of his past and is rarely pleased with the contents. Sovereign befriends a young lady named Toni after a mugging and a good portion of the novel deals with their relationship, as she becomes his lover and confidante. Through their conversations and interactions, we're informed about Sovereign's upbringing and his family. The retrospecting into his family, his relationship with his grandfather, his lively live-in-the-moment brother is where this novel sizzles.

Sovereign's sight is returned after a "traumatic" event that, ironically involves Toni's "friend" and subsequently Sovereign wants to set things right in his life. He wants to change his reactions and behaviors to become a better person. The lack of sight has given Sovereign plenty of time to "see" his past and make changes to his present to arm himself for the future.

The usual Mosley humor and suspense are ever present, as well as the sexual prowess of a middle aged man. That seems to a be a recurring theme in Mosley books, effectively making him the hero of every man in that 45-54 demographic. This was a tight and quick read. And as you all know, you rarely go wrong with Mosley.

Mosley Does it Again
By Amazon Customer
In this modern day novel set in New York City, Mosley combines all that's good in his other books to make this a must-read. Sovereign James is a successful, college-educated professional in a senior position at a great company. He goes blind, inexplicably and suddenly. Yet, this book is less about what's happening in the now and more about the past. Mosley's elegant and effortless chronicle into Sovereign's mind is revealing for Sovereign, and for the reader. His characters are believable and come to life on the pages: Toni's (the young lover) base selfishness; Lemuel's (Sovereign's rival) latent chivalry; Drum's (the errant brother) innate pragmatism; Zenith's (the older sister) reluctant remoteness, and Seth's (the shrink) humaneness, are qualities with which we can all identify. The reader almost forgets the secondary subject of race strumming alongside Sovereign's larger problems - he is a black revolutionary in a one-man State. His convictions and commitment are unwavering and unspoken as he assemblies his unknowing army. Suicide is a consistent hidden disquiet; family secrets abound. The primary theme of blindness laces the plot and tightens around who a person is, and how a person can change and shed one "skin" for another. Drum is the epitome of that theory; Toni, its anti-epitome. Sovereign strives to be constant, unchanging, but can't help himself. His effort results in blindness, because if eyesight doesn't give him insight, then blindness will. Drum is always moving but stays the same; on the other hand, Sovereign, in his intransigence, has to change for his own odyssey to be authentic. He is forced to change by circumstances, not geography, and grows more in six months than he has in twenty years. Nothing is as he expected, he doesn't succeed in his quest, but he gets more from his losses than he could have imagined and is satisfied, even happy, with the way he is left. In the end, I was relieved to see that should Mosley be so inclined, he could develop a robust long-term series from any of these characters. I hope he does.

The master at it again...
By Jason Frost
eBooks have taken on a few different faces. There is the "I'm going to publish my book digitally because I don't want to deal with a traditional publisher" face. There is the "I'm going to publish my book in print form and digital form because I want people to read my work" face. There is the "I'm going to put out an eBook in-between my major releases because I need to make money" face. There is the "I'm going to put out an eBook because I want my fans to have something to read until my major release" face. There there are the authors like Mosley who (in my opinion) publishes eBooks because, if they don't get their story out, they will simply and grotesquely explode. Nothing ruins your day like seeing the entrails of your favorite author on the floor of Starbucks.

Some people write to live, other live to write. Mosley, it seems, writes in order not to die. 'Odyssey' has all the strength and literary of Mosley, in a shorter story. I really HATE some of the book synopsis they have on Amazon. They way this one is written it makes you think that this story is only about Sovereign and his blindness. Yes AND no. His blindness plays a part but I submit that the meat of this story are the lives lived before Sovereign, the lives lived with Sovereign, and the lives lived around Sovereign. Mosley is one of the (very) few authors who has the talent to make his supporting characters as interesting as the main characters. Drum-Eddie, the shrink, and Toni. Oh my sweet lord Toni! Even now I'm thinking back to that gorgeous, beautiful, mocha skinned female. I know we're told that another incident cause Sovy's sight to return for a bit... but in the recesses of my mind I believe it's Toni. Who needs a doctor with a blue pill when you have a woman in black panties?

But Toni's charm doesn't stop at her perfect palm sized curves, her part in this story will confuse you. Oh her presence makes sense IN the story, but her presence in Sovy's life is the the confusion... actually that's not a good word to use... let's try... disorientation. Yeah, that's a better word. Sovereign's life is menu of disorientation. Childhood, adulthood, Toni-hood.

Another interesting aspect to this story is Sovy's view what race should be hired and HOW they should be hired. Weird interjections throughout the story with that but with the prevalent disorientation in this story, Mosley makes it work. Throughout Mosley's books you always have this strong underlying current of street, or rather, real life philosophy. Not all philosophy is born chanting on a mountain surrounded by clouds. A lot of it is born in the gutter surrounded by filth. The child of philosophy making love to reality is truth. Sovereign's truth must have had parents who were first cousins.

And then there's the ending... if you only read it once then you are a fool. I'm three days removed from finishing this book and I'm STILL re-reading it! This story is awash in disorientation so it only makes sense that the ending would paramount. Not sure how many times I can, or need to say it, but Walter Mosley is the man. Not only is he a writer among writers but he's the author that writers read when they want to read something great. If you think I'm kidding, ask them. If they smile... there's your answer.
