JB Lynn's my new favorite

I picked up this book because I had just finished JB Lynn's other book, Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman, and was literally craving more. While The First Victim is not at all the same genre as the other book, I still enjoyed the author's style and am glad to add this one to my collection. The storyline is somber, creating suspense, mystery and thrill, but is laced with a bit of romance that keeps you hoping the heroine will pull through in the end -- and finish happily every after with her highschool crush. I loved it. It was a good read while waiting for the second in the Hitwoman series (which has more humor and light-heartedness).

Great read for mystery/suspense lovers!

The First Victim is a captivating mystery that will probably make your skin crawl and your teeth hurt occasionally. I know it did mine. The author, J.B. Lynn created a decidedly evil killer, and at times gets a bit graphic in the details of what the killer does. It's not horribly over the top, though, not any worse than most crime tv shows.

The book flows well, I read it in one evening. I had to find out what happened! I will toot my own horn to say that I did figure out who the killer was, but I didn't realize how he/she fit in the story until the very end. There are lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing, I suspected everyone at one time or another. This novel will be a favorite for mystery/suspense fans!

Nothing special

The romance was blah, very boring with no chemistry. Baily came across as a clueless loser and Emily as a neurotic hag most of the time. I realize she went through a horrible ordeal, but the woman's afraid of her own shadow. And her decision at the end? Totally did not buy it considering how she felt about that town and everyone in it. As for the suspense----the issues she had with her father were never explored or explained, but maybe that's a good thing since there was so much family drama in this book anyway. And the revelation of who the kidnapper was.....well, let's just say really? In all these years, no one in that town could put 2 and 2 together and come up with something besides 5? Then again, no one could figure out that all these "accidents" happening at once were suspicious. The only good thing this book had going for it was it was fairly short so I only wasted one day of my life on it.

Wonderful New Book

Randy Pennington's new book is such a great read...helpful...loaded with insights...and the kind of book that really makes you reflect on how you are handling change right now. His take on how trust plays into the dynamics of change really rattled my brain a bit and made so many past people encounters replay in the movie in my head. This sensational book is a nifty blend of stories and principles and will help any business person deal with the major shifts that are inevitable in business. If I were you, I'd buy one for yourself and a couple more for your close friends.

This book does what so few books do, moves past tired clichés and overly simplified solutions and provides a real world view of how change works in the real world. The clear and compelling insights will help all of us navigate change and actually do something with "it." It is particularly helpful if you want to understand how change can move you and the organization forward quickly without getting bogged down in mindless evaluation. Read it and apply it!

Randy has done it again. Making Change Work is without question the most practical, principled, and powerful book I've read on managing change in the past 20 years...and I read them all! Nimble + Relevant + Engaged = the perfect combination for leading transformational change at any level, within any organization. Chapters 2, 12, & 14 are by themselves worth the investment. Excellent work Randy. Only wish I had written this :-)

Gitlin does a nice job of integrating his first-person recollections with a broader history that ranges from the roots of 1960s revolt in 1950s affluence and complacency to the movement's apocalyptic collapse in the early 1970s--a victim of its own excesses as well as governmental persecution. Nobody is better equipped to write a definitive history of the extraordinary 1960s than Gitlin. An astute observer of the media (The Whole World Is Watching, Inside Prime Time and Watching Television), he was also at one time president of Students for a Democratic Society and remained prominent in their councils until the excesses of the Weathermen and the student risings that followed the 1970 killings at Kent State combined to bring the end of the New Left. In political terms, it was a period that could not be measured or evaluated by any previous American standards; and the great value of The Sixties is that Gitlin, from his thoughtful insider's position, is able to trace the ebb and flow between new radicals and old party-liners, between the hippies and such arcane groups as the Diggers and the Yippies, between those on the fringes of liberal power in Washington and members of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee who worked so hard through the early part of the decade to bring civil rights to the South. No one who wants in future to write a coherent political history of that timeand there is no good reason, after The Sixties, for anyone to try for quite a whilewill be able to do without Gitlin's insights. He makes the agonized thrashings of the period understandable in terms of personal liberation, frustration, idealism and guilt about being born lucky in an unlucky world; he also manages to make it a logical sequel to the comfortable, complacent '50s. The detailed and informed political history is the core of the book, but nothing significant is missed: the music, the clothes, the obsession with drugs, the flowering of the underground press and, of course, the key moments: the assassinations, the demonstrations, the People's Park in Berkeley, the "police riot" at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, the Weathermen Manhattan townhouse blastit's all here, and vividly recorded. And finally, as Gitlin convincingly and elegiacally shows in his concluding chapter, we are still, in many subtle ways, living the legacy of that time, however unlikely that may seem. The Sixties is a triumph of lucidly written popular history.

Brilliant Account of 60's Student Movement

A rare constellation of virtues made it hard to put down this riveting volume. First of all, Gitlin is a superb writer. His language often reaches a literary quality, he has a novelist's eye for detail, an investigative journalist's command of the relevant information, and a story-teller's ability with narrative. That Gitlin is an academic sociologist shows through in his capable analyses of social forces. His description of the dynamics of escalation in the student movement's activities together with its own self-understanding is especially enlightening. His account is also impressively fair-minded. Because he cared so much about achieving the goals of the student movement, Gitlin describes what was thought and done both sympathetically and critically. These and other reasons make the book well worth reading for anyone interested in U.S. culture. But for those of us who were involved in the campus struggles against the war in Nicaragua or against investment in apartheid South Africa in the '80's or, indeed, in any such campaigns since, this book creates a debt of gratitude.

THE 1960's in some respects was a decade like any other: a fixed span of time filled with otherwise disparate events. But ''The Sixties'' also came to mean something more: a style, a mood, a spirit of youthful rebelliousness with its own marketable aura of excess, adventure and innocent, shoot-for-the-moon idealism. Once that spirit was spent, as Todd Gitlin writes in ''The Sixties,'' a compelling new firsthand account of the era, the decade quickly ''receded into haze and myth,'' leaving behind only a few ''lingering images of nobility and violence,'' of charismatic martyrs and mobs in the street, ''a collage of fragments scooped together as if a whole decade took place in an instant.'' Today when pundits debate a possible resurrection of the 60's, they usually have in mind a superficially similar pastiche of trends, from paisleyed fashion and renewed evidence of dissent on campus to well-publicized displays of political conscience by popular rock stars.

Mr. Gitlin's ambitious effort to cut through the nostalgia and myth surrounding the 60's takes an unusual form. Working, as he puts it, ''at the edge of history and autobiography,'' he has written a wide-ranging narrative that oscillates between the first and third person, incorporating both new research on key episodes and potted histories of folk-rock music, hippies, the origins of the women's movement and so forth.

What is important in the book - and what makes it required reading for anyone who wants to grasp the youthful spirit of the time - is the author's highly personal chronicle of the rise and violent collapse of the New Left. Without false sentimentality, he re-creates the political odyssey of the radicals of his generation, as well as his own role in that odyssey.

Beautifully Crafted and Scrupulously Fair

Todd Gitlin's account of the sixties is part history, part autobiography. As a sometime president of SDS Gitlin was fully immersed in the actions of that period and discusses them with an intensity and level of specificity that most later historians would not be able to muster. At the same time, Gitlin is one of the country's premier sociologists dealing with media, culture and life as lived and experienced.

He is scrupulously fair--fair to his own principles and fair to his own experiences, but equally fair with regard to reality. He does not whitewash the sixties; he chronicles them. He does so with a clear eye for their idealism and their earnestness as well as their excess. He sees their successes and he sees their long-term deleterious effects.

Basically, the story is a simple one. The sixties' political movements worked in two directions: to help others and to free the self. The former was much more successful than the latter. The former now enjoys widespread support (for black civil rights and women's rights in particular). The protests against the war and the manner in which the war was justified and prosecuted are a more complex issue that continues to be divisive. The expansion of the space for the self, on the other hand, is more subject to criticism, particularly in the effects which Gitlin itemizes--the ravages of drugs, challenges to family commitment, out of wedlock births, grade inflation, and so on.

The book is long, as it needs to be, but it is beautifully written. The style is paratactic and additive, breathlessly listing events, names, issues, lifestyles, successes and ravages. A number of sociologists write well, but few as well as Gitlin. He is also a novelist. Crime readers who have not read his novel, The Murder of Albert Einstein, have missed a work of great skill.

The sixties are a bittersweet subject, mostly sweet for some, mostly bitter for others, but they must be seen in all of their facets. Most of all, they were a cultural experience and Gitlin is particularly well positioned to describe how they felt. He does so with both urgency and immediacy as well as a mature eye.

This is a very important book.

and thought it would be a good gift for several single friends

Dumbest book I've ever bought. Saw it in the window of a bookstore, and thought it would be a good gift for several single friends. Once I received it and skimmed it, I realized it was crass and unfunny. Probably appeals to people who love watching reality tv. I discarded the 3 copies I purchased. Not smart of me to buy more than one copy before taking a closer look. What a waste of money, but it would have been worse to send these to anyone.

Nothing Spectacular

Purchased this book for a friend then decided to download on my kindle. Perhaps it wasn't as entertaining as the book appeared to be but it was just okay. Quick read too.

About the Author
Elen Sentier is a spirit keeper and taleweaver from a long family lineage. Her mother’s mother was a witch from the Isle of Man while her father was a cunning man whose family were very closely involved with Annie Besant and Rudolf Steiner. She was born on Dartmoor, grew up on the edge of Exmoor and now lives (with husband, cats and wildlife) in the back of beyond, by the river Wye in the Welsh Marches where she writes and teaches British native shamanism.

Walking the Deer Trods

Elen Sentier is a spirit keeper and taleweaver writing and teaching the way of the awenydd, a British native shamanism. With this book she hopes to help the reader discover and walk the quicksilver paths of Elen of the Ways for themselves. Note that this isn't a book that is meant to be read and set aside ... it is a book that encourages the reader to practice what they are reading about.

For this work, this tradition, deer are held sacred. They act as mentors, guides, and healing spirits. Sentier begins by talking about the ice age and global warming, and how the cold world is an integral part of our world. She talks about a sculpture known as the "Swimming Reindeer" - two reindeer, male and female, shown with their heads raised and legs extended. It is at least 13,000 years old. Sentier note that it displays the hunter's knowledge of anatomy, and that it is now in the care of the British Museum. Sentier interprets this sculpture as indicating that the Reindeer Goddess was important to humankind from very early times.

Sentier talks about wild reindeer as being a major resource for humans in the northern hemisphere for tens of thousands of years. They are an important source of food, clothing, shelter, and tools. Basically, this was a hunter/gatherer society, with land belonging to everyone. The transition to an agricultural based society, and farming, brought on the concept of land ownership, and the first forms of modern government.

Sentier portrays the hunter/gatherer's as "ultra-light back packers", and that they consideredthat people belong to the land, not the land to the people. There is some really good material in this section, including commentary on the "Man The Hunter" conference in Chicago in 1966, an some of the ideas presented there.

There is some great commentary on gifting, and how it was practiced by the hunter/gatherer society. These really are things to think about. It is a concept that is coming back into vogue with some people right now ... generally termed "energy exchange".

The section on deer and humans begins with a beautiful Lascaux cave painting of an Irish Elk (entitled "Lascaux Megaloceros". The cave (in southern France) was very far underground ... hidden from everyday sight.

Speaking of the inter-connectedness of life, Sentier notes: "Spirit, your spirit, builds your body like a space-suit for living on Planet Earth out of the stuff of Earth. Your spirit then inhabits the
space-suit for the duration of your incarnation and at the end, when your body dies, all the atoms go back into the Earth again to become other things." She goes on to say that when we are in touch with our spirit, we simply "know" this. In this knowing, we understand that we must ask permission to kill our food to eat ... whether it is animal or plant. Respect life, and know that we all nourish each other all of the time.

Sentier talks about the cave paintings as the way in which the people of that time communicated with the Otherworld, and how they carried on their lore. She also talks about the migration trails, and how they were a part of the lives of the people of that time. It is quite interesting to read about how towns and cities have been built on these routes, only to have the inhabitants of the towns and cities complain about the presence of the animals! How far have we come from being one with nature! Too far, IMHO.

This book is filled with incredible photos that enhance the information provided. It is a lesson in the history of mankind, as much as it is a presentation of the ancient shamanism of Britain. Sentier notes that in British Celtic tradition the goddess is the Earth and the Land, while the god is the guardian of the earth and husbandman of the Land. The goddess is known as Sovereignty, she holds the power while the god serves the power, and act as guardian for it.

Sentier talks about Elen guarding the "quicksilver threads" ... the energy lines (ley lines) that criss-cross Britain. They connect sacred wells, stone circles, hilltops, and other sacred sites. And yet ... she is virtually unknown in Britain. These energy roads are what the Wild Hunt travels on. (The Wild Hunt is a ghostly group that rie horses and follow hounds in pursuit of someone or something.)

Through the experiences and training she has had, as well as through historical references, Sentier brings to us Elen of the Ways, the ancient shamanism of Britain. For those that wish to know about the shamanic path, specifically this shamanic path, this book is a wonderful resource.

Dangerously Simplistic Wiccan Tract on Shamanism

It was so hard to get beyond the Young Adults writing style of the author that I couldn't finish the book. I'm a shamanic practitioner (in modern day lingo) and was interested to see what this and other books in the series had to offer; especially with the British Celtic background it touts. In the Kindle copy I have, there are no footnotes, references or bibliography to back up the simplistic renditions Sentier presents; for example, the complicated tribal peoples such as the Saami or the childlike regurgitation of some of the stories from the Mabinogion. She glosses over the fact that ancient Britons had many Gods and many Goddesses by using the terms"Goddess"(Land) and "God" (Guardian) to cover any and all deities of the culture and then goes on to break them out into separate entities, but all having the same role as "Land" and "Guardian". I had to close the book at the point where she states that Gwyn ab Nudd is the Guardian of the Goddess. He has no big relation to the essence of guarding as he is a harvester of the slain in battles who then in later versions became a leader of the Wild Hunt and his hounds became the harvesters of souls. Not really protective and certainly not entities that you should approach without the utmost respect and caution. Sentier intimates: "Gwyn’s hounds, in whatever shape they come, are fierce and wild but will be very good friends and wonderful guardians...". Sentier shows her transpersonal work baldly here as her god/dess descriptions are more or less direct Jungian archetypal images and Jung was the creator of collective (transpersonal) unconscious theory of psychology.

Skimming the rest of the book later, I found that the practices are all based in Wicca; while fine in its own right, should not be trotted out as "ancient shamanistic ways". I'm guessing that the lore and skills she learned from family and elders of her community were shoved and squeezed into a Wiccan paradigm as there is no further depth of exploration evidenced in the book. I would not recommend any of the exercises to a novice as the entities Sentier presents are deep and sometimes/often dangerous - not every deity you meet is only there to teach you or give you something! I'm surprised that Llewellyn Publishing didn't pick up this series unless it was too lightweight even for them. For anyone looking to explore shamanism within a cultural context that has no written or existing tradition, first get works by Michael Harner or Sandra Ingerman and build a strong foundation in the practices and and develop a solid habit of moving into and out of the Otherworlds. Then deepen those practices by using them within the Western culture you are immersed in or looking to deepen such as ancient Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavian, Eastern European, etc. And when studying lore or culture - use good and reputable resources.

Authentic Intro to British Shamanism

In preparation for a trip to Great Britain next year, I wanted to learn more about British shamanism and selected this book. My goal was accomplished! The author has a long family lineage of authentic shamanism, and she also learned from the wise women of the village where she grew up. Not only does the author share ancient knowledge, she also ties into the many ways modern civilization has overlooked, and practically destroyed, our connections to nature and Mother Earth. This book has given me a solid introduction to ancient Britain, as well as increased my understanding of the relationship between deer and humans.
