Stewart Headlam's Radical Anglicanism: The Mass, the Masses, and the Music Hall (Studies in Anglican History), by John Richard Orens

Standing in stark contrast to the conservative churchmen of Victorian Britain, the Anglican clergyman Stewart Headlam was a passionately progressive reformer, a champion of the working poor--especially women --a defender of the music hall performers his colleagues attacked as licentious, and, in short, a man of God who remained firmly and controversially engaged with the society in which he lived and worked._x000B_This book, the first significant study of Headlam since 1928, paints a rich and complex picture of this larger-than-life man of the cloth, charting the trail he blazed across the social, political, and religious landscape of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Britain._x000B_Dissatisfied from an early age with his familys Evangelical faith, Headlam became an Anglican curate, but his political views were increasingly radicalized as he befriended working-class atheists and trade union leaders. John Richard Orens details Headlams repeated conflicts with the establishment figures of his faith over his defense of music hall ballet performers right to reveal their legs, his role in the early years of the Fabian Society, his anti-puritanism, and his passionate socialism. Headlam was even instrumental in having Oscar Wilde bailed out of prison following the writers arrest for homosexual offenses.?_x000B_With this intellectual biography, Orens places Headlams life, beliefs, and actions in the context of the period, contributing to the ongoing debate about the proper relationship between Christianity, on the one hand, and society, sexuality, and the arts, on the other.

Review
"This book is of immense importance. Since the biography by Bettany in 1928 there has been no serious assessment of Headlam ... 'the most controversial clergyman of the late Victorian age.' ... Behind the eccentricity and outrageous desirte to shock, there was a theological dynamic and focus that shaped the thought and the lives of many Christians less daring than Headlam himself. He pioneered a liberationist tradition within Catholic Anglicanism, a rebellious spirit within a conforming Church, and Orens's study shows that his story is highly relevant to our current crises. This work ought to be read as the first serious intellectual biography of one who can rightly be seen as the father of 'sacramental socialism.' ... Thorough, theologically astute, and entertaining." -- Rev. Kenneth Leech, *Church Times*

Wonderful introduction to the Evolving Political Left
By Duncan B. MacDonald
Orens' Stewart Headlam's Radical Anglicanism is not only a fascinating, and long overdue, intellectual biography of Stweart Headlam, the Anglican cleric who worked so diligently to christianize Socialism, but also a very well-told account of the evolving debate on the part of the politiical left in Victorian and Edwardian Britain. A debate which in time was to have an impact on the development of the Social Gopsel in the United States.
Orens is a very capable storyteller, and the reader soon finds himself in the world and thoughts of Headlam, G.B. Shaw and S. Webb. Through their own words the reader is taken along as they strive, and bicker, to find the way to build the New Jerusalem in Britian. along the way, the reader comes to repsect Headlam for the stregnth of his convictions and the depths of hit faith.
This book is a must read for anyone interested in the story of evolving political thought in the nineteenth century, the foundations of a christianized political left, or just a great biography of one of the world's more interesting characters.

sacramental socialism
By Mr. D. P. Jay
Ken Leech's review in the Church Times says: "John Griffin's small book on the Oxford Movement claimed that it was "radical in its politics and its sociology'". But the evidence does not bear this out. Most Anglican Ca¬tholics remained socially conven¬tional, and were no threat to the status quo. Many, from an early -stage; were preeious and even dainty. None of this is new however, in the 1870s, there was a fusion of early Oxford theology, Ritualism, and the Christian socialism of E D. Maurice. The key figure in the fusion was Stewart Duckworth Headlam, the prophetic leader of the Guild of St Matthew, founded at St Matthew's, Bethnal Green, in June 1877."

Headlam was a member of the Fabian Society who stood bail for Oscar Wilde, urged the common ownership of land and, on the occasion of Queen Victoria's jubilee argued that a biblical jubilee for the poor, when hey would be released from their debts, was better.

He was the father of sacramental socialism and when many of his peers were urging belief in the real presence of Christ in the mass he argued that this presence extended to the music hall and to ballet. "The beauty of the Mass revealed not only God's beauty, Headlam argued, but also the world's, represented on the altar by the gifts of bread and wine. The Mass thus reminded worshippers that God's kingdom would be established on earth and that it would be as joyful as it would be just. Art and fellowship were inseparable in Headlam's conception of life in the age to come. Socialism, he believed, would liberate the human spirit so that all human beings could live "nobly and truly" and "enjoy all that is beautiful and pure...... Again and again he reminded the people of St. Matthew's that they were "made for nobler things . . . than mechanical works" and that they should "train themselves intellectually and spiritually" lest they sink to the level of "a mere machine." It was important that the ritualists had turned their churches into homes of art, he noted, for the poor were perishing "for lack of beauty, and joy, and pleasure."....He championed the doctrines most dear to all Anglo-Catholics: baptismal regeneration, the real presence of Christ in the eucharist, and the church's apostolic authority. But having learned his faith from Maurice rather than from the Tractarians, he interpreted these doctrines differently. That Christ gave him¬self on the altar, for example, Headlam had no doubt. But he avoided speak¬; ing of a change in the eucharistic elements, preferring instead to speak of Christ's presence "in the holy communion." To H. G. Wells he explained that "the Presence in the Mass [was] a spiritual presence." It was the social significance of the sacrament he thought most important, not its metaphyscs. In the Mass, he argued, the priest sets forth "such a radical reformer, so divine a democrat as Jesus Christ," and thus pledged the church to support "every kind of reform and progress."

"Headlam's discussion of baptismal regeneration was equally corporate. Like Maurice, he rejected the view that baptism transformed human nature, owing men and women to fend off the wrath of God only as long as they preserved their sacramental innocence. Baptism, he insisted, declared that all human beings were children of God. Moreover, baptismal regeneration would be a mockery if divine love were alterable. Like the eucharist, baptism was a democratic sacrament offered to all, binding all in Christ to a common father. Thus, the Church of England was the people's church, unlike those Nonconformist sects that, despite their professions of liberalism, reserved baptism for adults who shared their narrow opinions."

"As for the dancers themselves, Headlam knew more about their private lives than any clergyman in England. Indeed, he was the only priest to whom many performers would turn in time of need. For years he had been laboring quietly to keep dancers and actresses from taking up disreputable lives on the streets. Since 1879, unbeknownst to all but his friends, he had been visiting Brussels twice a year to help the British Institute care for English dancers who might otherwise have fallen prey to that city's notorious purveyors of flesh. He even established a Sunday school for the ballerinas' children.'

"Headlam did not ask (bishop) Temple to endorse the music hall because it was pure but because it was entertaining and, at times, inspiring. It was easy, Headlam knew, for Temple and others like him to deny they were puritans by parading their respect for the drama. But what made a puritan, Head-lam argued, was not hatred of the theater but hatred of pleasure. Even the simplest delights were precious, especially for those wearied by long hours of drudgery. And there were times, he wrote, when dancers were so graceful that, like swallows in flight or trees bending in the wind, they mirrored the grace of God. "How healing this is," he exclaimed, "for our overworked and worried population."

"If the music hall did not always live up to its high calling, Headlam argued, that was the fault of the moralists who condemned it...... For the clergy the choice was simple: either the human body was "an evil thing or the temple of the Holy Ghost." If they were orthodox, Headlam declared, they must acknowledge that the body in motion was a sacrament and that Christ was present on the Alhambra stage as surely as he was in the Mass.....The dispute between Temple and Headlam, declared the Reverend Charles Marson, confronted the church with "the whole question of Protestantism versus Catholicism in concrete," for Temple's hostility toward the ballet was rooted in Protestantism's antisacramental hatred of the body"

The Victorians spoke of the `deserving' and `undeserving poor' as if poverty was often the fault of he who was poor, about which the author observed: "the Tractarians shared the common assumption that poverty is divinely ordained. "God has divided the world into rich and poor," Keble told his parishioners, "that there might be the more exercise of charity and patience." Thus suffering ought to be relieved but the poor must accept their unequal lot until they enter heaven. And even paradise was not assured, for the Oxford Apostolicals insisted - as firmly as their Evangelical opponents that unbelievers and unrepentant sinners were doomed to everlasting damnation. Not surprisingly, this gloomy prospect only deepened the chasm between church and people. "The great body of Englishmen is becoming utterly indifferent to us all," F. D. Maurice wrote sadly; they "smile grimly and contemptuously at our controversies, and I believe that no help is to come to their suffering from any of us."

Against theological abstractions and hope for a heaven hereafter: "(F.D.) Maurice insisted that Christianity is a religion of this world as well as the next. We need not scale the heavens to find Christ, Maurice wrote. Rather, we should seek him where he is already to be found: "in all our ordinary business and duties, in the cornfield, in the shop, at the marriage feast, wherever we go, whatever we are about....... Most Christians, he complained, had cast living men and women out of heaven, reducing it to a home for the righteous dead. But the truth is that the kingdom of heaven--the divine society ordained by God for the whole human race--has already been established on earth.

"The great evils afflicting England, Maurice believed, were the result of the nation's refusal to acknowledge this fellowship. Instead of living as children of a common father, men and women were blindly pursuing their own selfish ends. Competition, he claimed, was the economic equivalent of sectarianism, and it was equally detestable. He denounced as idolatrous the elevation of the competitive principle to the status of "some tremendous power . . . to which we must bow down whether we will or not." The nation must choose, the insisted, between competition and association. Kingsley, always more dramatic, likened competition to cannibalism."

For those of us who are accustomed to witness devotion to Our Lady from rather misogynistic types, it is refreshing to read: ". In a sermon he gave at St. Mary's, Graham Street, in 1880, he delineated again the bond between dancers, workers, and the Catholic church. His subject, "The Cultus of Our Lady," was dear to all ritualists. But there was nothing conventional about Headlam's Marian devotion. Reverence for Mary, he told the congregation, was important because it strengthened belief in Christ's humanity. Only this incarnational faith could deliver the church and the world from the Manichean Calvinism that condemned joy and had "turned Merry England into what it is." Wealthy Anglo-Catholics may have thought that their principal duty was to teach the poor sound doctrine. What they ought to do, Headlam argued, was share the delight that devotion to Mary and her son inspired. "Learn the Catechism yourselves, my sisters," he admonished the women of the parish. And, as John Ruskin had urged, "teach the children of the working class to dance on Sunday."" But dance alone, Headlam reminded his listeners, was not a sufficient remedy for injustice. The incarnate God who took flesh of the Virgin Mary hallowed their labor even as he hallowed their art. It was thus the duty of every Christian to take up the cause of social reform. Many respectable churchgoers cared about those less fortunate than themselves. But too often, Headlam complained, they merely handed out doles and then dismissed the objects of their charity as the "lower orders." The poor were kin, he told the people of St. Mary's, and must be met "on terms of absolute social equality."

"He also believed that equality must characterize the relations between men and women. It was no coincidence, Headlam argued, that England was awakening to Mary's importance at the very time that women were demand¬ing the right to work, the right to the same education as men, and the abolition of laws that treated them as chattel. In summoning his congregation to support trade unions, he emphasized the rights of female workers to "a better share" of industry's profits. Headlam warned the congregants that if they were deaf to workers' cries, their "skirts" would be stained with "the blood of the souls of God's people."

Headlam addressed the Lambeth Conference about tax and rents. Unlike Margaret Thatcher's misguided attempt at exegesis when she gave her `Sermon on the Mound to the church of Scotland, Headlam said, "two propositions which underlie socialist teaching are essentially Christian. The first of these, the guild council argued, went back to St. Paul. "If a man will not work," the apostle had written, "neither let him eat." Christians were thus enjoined, like socialists, to condemn an economic system that allowed the idle few to extort rent and interest from the laboring many. Socialists also demanded a more equitable distribution of income, and this, too, was a biblical commandment. "The husbandman that laboureth," the Old Testament taught, "must be the first to partake of the fruits." To argue, there¬fore, that wages be kept low so that landlords and capitalists could obtain a return on their investments may have been economic orthodoxy, but it was Christian heresy.'"

There was a complaint about his ritualist practices. Would that all tat queens could answer as he did: "What his anonymous complainant thought arcane and Romish, Head-lam justified as common decency and common sense. He did not like the word genuflect, he said, but admitted that he had bent his knee at the mass's last gospel. What else was he to do? Here was proclaimed "the most stupendous fact in history"--the Word was made flesh--a miracle that abolished "all class distinctions and unbrotherly monopolies." He had kissed "the Holy Table" because he loved the altar. And he had kissed the gospel book because the Bible was "the charter of humanity," especially of the "disinherited, the oppressed, the masses."

"Headlam's explanation of his private devotions was just as straightforward. He had prayed, he told the commission, "for 'Randall my Archbishop,' and 'Arthur, my Bishop,-- and hoped that his supplication would "not be taken amiss by those for whom it was offered. I also prayed," he added, "for a few dead men and women whom I have loved and for others who have been of value to me and to the Church, that they might be granted a place of refreshment, light, and peace." His accuser was right, Headlam acknowledged, in reporting that he had spoken in a low voice to his servers. But it was for a reason that an enemy of sacerdotalism ought to have cheered: he was confessing his sins. Those two simple laymen, he testified, "had the audacity to ask Almighty God to have mercy upon me, forgive me my sins, and bring me to everlasting life." It was "a healthy private devotion to begin the great service with," he argued, for there was always the danger that "a priest might be tempted to make too much of himself."

"in the London diocese and the Canterbury province so many little children have no clean beds to sleep in, so many of our dearly beloved brethren have no healthy homes to live in, so many are out of work, so many , are overworked, so many are underpaid."" As he explained in a sermon at All Souls', the commission might try to decide if a priest should be punished for saying "dearly beloved brethren" in a low voice rather than the customary loud voice. But the important question was "whether we are brethren at all, whether we had not better give up shamming and recognize that we are rivals and competitors, ravening wolves--anything rather than brethren."

"Thus, when Headlam told GSM priests to put their sacramental duties before all else, he was not asking them to abandon politics. Rather, he believed that they and their congregations would find in the sacraments the vision of human life that alone can inspire the struggle for justice."

An obscure piece of history becomes a great story.
By Robert H Bear
John Orens is both an accomplished academician and a great storyteller. The book is thoroughly footnoted, and I have no doubt but that it is academically sound. What really intrigued me in the story of this relatively obscure churchman from the other side of the Pond was the dynamic social involvement of the mainline churches in Victorian/Edwardian times, as both a progressive and reactionary force. It is food for thought on how churches might become more relevant today. For anyone with a bit of an historical bent, it is a delightful and entertaining read.

I was standing there naked when my dead husband walked into my bathroom...

Lillie St. Claire is a Talent, one of a few who can permanently dispatch the spirits of the dead that walk the earth. Her skills are in demand in a haunted country, where a plague of ghosts is a civic nuisance.

But those skills are also feared by many citizens, who view Talents as near-demons. Her husband comes to see her as a Freak; so when Nathan dies after a car crash, she is relieved to be free of his increasingly vicious presence. Lillie expects to be haunted by Nathan's ghost, but not to become Suspect #1 for her husband's murder and reanimation.

But what's most surprising of all is the growing attraction between her and psi-crime detective John Thresher. He thinks that Lillie killed Nathan—and Nathan must agree, because his zombie is seeking revenge. Now she and Thresher must work together to solve her husband's murder—before his corpse kills her...

Dark and Intriguing
By akb--bookworm
** Received for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**

The Cover Art and the are what grabbed my attention. Happily, "Dark & Disorderly" lived up to the description and was a fun Urban Fantasy read with a fresh premise and storyline.

Lillie St. Claire is a Talent, able to see auras and dispatch ghosts in our modern world, which has officially recognized the existence of the paranormal and the need for people like Lillie. Unfortunately, someone is trying to kill Lillie and is using any method they can from using the specter of her recently deceased husband, to using zombies, to sabotaging her car. Nothing will stop them until she's dead. Psi-Cop Johnny Thresher has taken an interest in her case, but to Lillie it's never quite clear what his motives are.

What I liked:
1. Lillie--She's not the typical Urban Fantasy Heroine who is all ballsy, badass, mouthy, and a master of martial arts or fighting of some sort. But, she's not helpless either. She has always been ostracized because of her Talent, so she's a bit insecure and has few people she calls friends. However, she has a sense of justice and kindness that leads her to selflessly use her Talent to help others. Just the opening chapter had me feeling like she was real and relatable--she'd just been scared by the specter/zombie of her late husband and proceeds to turn on every light in the house and search every corner, under every bed, and inside each closet while holding a baseball bat. That would totally be me! She's not ruled by lust or emotion. She realizes she lives in the real world with real consequences.
2. Johnny--He's not your typical Alpha Male. Oh, he's Alpha still, but not over the top. He comes across as someone you'd know in real life, not some made up fantasy. He's shown up in town for who knows why with his own agenda. You're never really sure if he's helping Lillie or investigating Lillie.
3. Mystery and Storyline--Someone is out to get Lillie, but who and why? Clues are found along the way and it's a fun ride. The storyline was fresh and original, not a rehash of everything else on the market right now.

What didn't quite work for me:
1. Info Dumps--There were several times in the book that felt like info dumps. I found my eyes glazing over and losing interest and scanning ahead for more story. The info was useful in understanding the world Ms. Harris created, but I really think it could have been condensed.
2. Word Choices--Another reviewer pointed this out as well and I have to agree. Several times the author used "big words" when simpler words would have worked better and improved the story flow. It's just not normal for people to say things like "impugn." It reminds me of movies made in the 40' and 50's and not something that people say today. This was a very minor annoyance and was easily overlooked.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this little gem. Despite the rough writing in some patches, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read. It was refreshing to pick up an Urban Fantasy with NO vampires or werewolves. This story is not a romance, but does have a romantic undertone done just right. I'm looking forward to where Ms. Harris takes these characters.

Reading with Tequila
By Jennifer Sicurella
I never had a clue what was coming next while reading Dark and Disorderly. It was fantastic. Every twist and turn was a complete surprise and you just don't get those kind of experiences often enough.

I loved Lillie. She's strong, determined, has been through hell and she's not going to take it anymore. Still she cries for others pain and vomits in the face of grisly death. She's a balanced, realistic character that's easy to fall in love with.

There were some obscure mythological/paranormal terms that could have been described in more detail as they were not easily understood through context alone. Those with an education in myths and legend and extremely avid readers of fiction involving lesser known paranormal creatures will love the way they are worked into the story. The author writes in a style that expects readers to already have some knowledge on the subjects and doesn't drone on by explaining every new thing.

Lillie exorcises ghosts. I'm not really into ghosts stories, but I don't mind them in the background. The ghosts are a huge part of Dark and Disorderly, but they're shown through Lillie's unfrightened, logical point of view. Seeing them this way, instead of through the eyes of a haunting victim, made them a really interesting and exciting part of the story. If all ghost stories were told this way, I could easily become a fan of the theme.

You never quite know what's going on with detective Johnny and that's what makes the book all the more engrossing. Why is he so interested in her? Is it because of her ability? Does he consider her a suspect? Is he merely attracted to her? Once you think you know his motives, he goes in an entirely new direction.

I could go on at length about how wonderful this book is, but the point is that Dark and Disorderly is a twisted and completely unexpected paranormal thriller that shocked me time and again. Bernita Harris is a fantastic new voice in the paranormal genre.

A Great Start to a New Series
By Melissa Books and Things
This book is the first book in a series of Lillie St. Claire. Her past was not happy and was in fact orphaned at the age of 5. She has had to endure a lot of prejudice because of her "Talent" at an early age and so has no solid sense of self. When she meets the charismatic and sociopathic former husband, Nathan, the torture continues until she doesn't know what is true and false in the world. Despite this, she finds some strength but never feels strong since she constantly has her husband's abusive talk in her head. Her talents and a sudden rise in paranormal activity bring the attention of the feds and particularly Johnny Thresher. Thresher becomes enamored, but his police attitude doesn't allow himself to fully fall into Lillie's spell easily. They both fight an attraction all the while trying to figure out exactly who killed her husband and who reanimated him. Also, who could be wanting Lillie dead as well?

This was a fun book full of mystery and lots of paranormal activity. Not only do we have the mystery of Nathan, but a personal mystery of who and what exactly Lillie is as well. My main criticism is Lillie herself. I understand that she had been through a lot, but her constant whining about not being strong started to get on my nerves a bit. Now, if perhaps more of her abuse with her husband was revealed even in her private thoughts it might have seemed less whiny. Not that I wanted to be a voyeur, but it would have put that constant worry in a more comparative light. It would have made her strengths even stronger as well. I do think that as we see more of Lillie, however, I think that worry will get less and she will be more confident in her self and in her own strengths. I personally want to see what happens to Lillie as the story goes on.

I give this book 3 1/2 stars. It was an interesting first book and I think we really start to understand and get to know Lillie St. Claire.

Foundations of Relational Realism: A Topological Approach to Quantum Mechanics and the Philosophy of Nature (Contemporary Whitehead Studies

If there is a central conceptual framework that has reliably borne the weight of modern physics as it ascends into the 21st century, it is the framework of quantum mechanics. Because of its enduring stability in experimental application, physics has today reached heights that not only inspire wonder, but arguably exceed the limits of intuitive vision, if not intuitive comprehension. For many physicists and philosophers, however, the currently fashionable tendency toward exotic interpretation of the theoretical formalism is recognized not as a mark of ascent for the tower of physics, but rather an indicator of sway--one that must be dampened rather than encouraged if practical progress is to continue.

In this unique two-part volume, designed to be comprehensible to both specialists and non-specialists, the authors chart out a pathway forward by identifying the central deficiency in most interpretations of quantum mechanics, and indeed, in modern philosophy more generally: That in the conventional, metrical depiction of extension, inherited from the Enlightenment, objects are characterized as fundamental to relations--i.e., such that relations presuppose objects but objects do not presuppose relations. The authors, by contrast, argue that in quantum mechanics physical extensiveness fundamentally entails not only relations of objects, but also relations of relations. In this way, quantum mechanics exemplifies a concept of extensive connection that it is fundamentally topological rather than metrical, and thus requires a logico-mathematical framework grounded in category theory rather than set theory.

By this thesis, the fundamental quanta of quantum physics are properly defined as units of logico-physical relation rather than merely units of physical relata as is the current convention. Objects are always understood as relata, and likewise relations are always understood objectively. Objects and relations are thus coherently defined as mutually implicative. The conventional notion of a history as 'a story about fundamental objects' is thereby reversed, such that the classical 'objects' become the story by which we understand physical systems that are fundamentally histories of quantum events.

These are just a few of the novel critical claims explored in this volume--claims whose exemplification in quantum mechanics will, the authors argue, serve more broadly as foundational principles for the philosophy of nature as it evolves through the 21st century and beyond.

Review
"A startling development in the lastcentury has been the overflowing of theoretical and observational sciences intothe fields of philosophy, particularly by quantum mechanics and cosmology. Thepresent book is twice valuable on this fascinating subject in my opinion: onone hand for its clear and lucid exposition and application of Whitehead'sontology as a most attractive framework for this kind of query, and on theother hand, for its extension of the dialectics of ontology through an originaluse of advanced concepts from modern mathematics."

ROLANDOMNÈS, Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Physics at the University ofParis-Sud, author of The Interpretationof Quantum Mechanics and Converging Realities (both Princeton UniversityPress).

"This is a unique book in its scope, approach andmethod. A novel physical and philosophical interpretation of sheaf theory shedsnew light on the quantum measurement problem, entanglement, locality and truth.A new systematic and rigorous relational realistic paradigm for naturalphilosophy has emerged, rooted on the same principles with Abstract (Modern)Differential Geometry, that transmutes the above into a fully fledged dynamicaltheory."

Review
“Recommended reading for graduate students and researchers/faculty. One of the driving contentions in modern physics has been the inability to reconcile the dominance of classical thought in the theory of relativity with the indeterminate nature of quantum mechanics. Some would argue that one such attempt at a compromise had arrived in the form of quantum field theories, with multiple ideas for resolving the asymmetrical features between relativity and ordinary quantum mechanics. Here, Epperson and Zafiris decide to return to ordinary quantum mechanics and propose sheaf theory, a theory that grew out of the abstract algebra of topology and set theory, as a solution to the stubborn paradoxes found in quantization attempts. They then compare the theory's interpretive value to the category scheme found in Whitehead's Process and Reality (1929). Epperson's earlier work, Quantum Mechanics and the Philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead (2004), is a good predecessor to the current book.”

Important breakthrough in understanding the quantum world
By Timothy E. Eastman
Leveraging rigorously-tested core quantum physics results, in combination with careful philosophical distinctions and new mathematical developments (topology and category theory), Drs. Epperson and Zafiris have achieved a uniquely viable interpretation of all known quantum experiments (including many rigorously- checked Bell inequality tests) in a way that is intuitively reasonable and avoids the usual exotica. In addition, their predictions on non-local quantum correlations associated with global topological phases have been confirmed in recent experiments. Epperson provides very readable yet in-depth philosophical and interpretive foundations (210 pages) followed by Zafiris' rigorous treatment of mathematical foundations (177 pages). This work is a must read for all those interested in the philosophy of physics, as well as those concerned with foundational philosophical questions impacted by such new physics results.

A new view of the world
By RSW
This work presents a profound new epistemological view of the world - based on the subtle and under appreciated schemata of A. N. Whitehead - and backs it up with hard mathematics. It is consequently not an easy read but will greatly reward close study. It belongs on the shelf of every serious student of philosophy, mathematics or physics.

sad to say, Epperson and Zafiris have been sucked in by the Bell fallacy
By Christoph
While it is good to use the Whitehead concept of an occasion of activity as an analytic device for interpretation of experiments, sad to say Epperson and Zafiris have not come to grips with the basic fallacy of the famous Bell argumentation. They uncritically accept the Bell argumentation and so their book is largely drivel, dressed up in fancy language and very technical theorizing. I am sorry to report this, but I think it best to speak plainly about such an important matter.

Gripping, action-packed and character-driven.
By Cheshire Cat
The book blurb summary is adequate enough to give you an idea of what this book is about. There has been an "outbreak," which quickly sweeps over the world spreading pandemonium wherever it goes. Time is of the essence, you only have the resources that are around you, and if you're not quick on your feet and use your head, you'll be dead. To me, the action and the storyline felt very current. Typically these stories feel like, well, stories. Stories told from the future or an alternative world, frequently with some supernatural element to them. RED HILL felt realistic, like it could happen today or tomorrow, particularly with its man-made infection. I was also impressed that Jamie could fit so much in a standalone. Typically, the zombie-type books I've read are a minimum three-book series, some more. For her to fit a complete story into one book, and not make it feel rushed, really impressed me.

Besides the story, the characters were a big draw for me. The use of three different POVs to tell the story really worked for me. This was particularly effective in seeing how everything came together, and Jamie seemed to bring things together brilliantly. There was also a wide range of other characters, diverse personality-wise more than racially, and outside of having a soldier in the mix, most weren't stuck in your typical category boxes.

First we have Scarlet, divorced, single mom with two daughters. Like Scarlet, I work in a hospital, and I could completely imagine what was happening around her, and how alone I would feel being separated from my family, and surrounded by the sickest of the sick. Her deep love for her daughters was obvious, and her dilemma was heart-breaking. I may not have agreed with all the decisions she made, but her passion for her children was unquestionable. Scarlet is a fierce mama bear. She was also a very strong female character. It was refreshing to have a woman take charge and not feel like she had to rely on anyone else. But on the other hand, we also get to see her softer side as well, and how a certain someone gave her renewed hope. But can she truly find happiness in this new world if she can't have what she truly wants?

Next we have Nathan, husband and father, in a crumbling marriage, trying to do the best he can for his daughter. I loved Nathan. Once again we see a parent who is fiercely protective of his child. And for once we have a guy who isn't some pushy know-it-all alpha male. Now, alpha males are super fun to read about, but not always necessary, and this was one perfect example. What I loved about Nathan's POV is that we get the flip-side of apocalyptic tragedy and what it meant for Nathan when he no longer had to live the life he had before.

Our final perspective is from Miranda, traveling with her sister and their boyfriends. Miranda was a mixed bag for me. I found her POV really interesting and the clues we're given early on about her make her later conflicts make sense. On one hand I was bothered by her actions, and on the other hand I felt awful about her situation and how stuck she was, no choice being a good choice. Here Jamie did a great job trying to put you into the head of someone whose issues were not an easy fix.

There was continuous action and suspense throughout most of the novel. I was gripped from the prologue and my heart felt like it was racing to the last page. There were heart-breaking moments of loss, and I got teary-eyed a few times. This wasn't an everyone-gets-out-alive story. There's death and despair and difficult decisions to be made. There are also some uncomfortable and horrible topics covered beyond the zombies, and unfortunately it was also realistic and relevant to our society, which made it all the more awful. But Jamie handled everything with care.

There is also romance, but I would not categorize it as heavily sexual (though there is some sex), just romantic, and more so in the second half. But what is predominant more than just romantic love is the love of family, particularly the love of a parent to a child (whether blood-related or not). The love of your child is a strong theme and makes the reader not only see what some of these characters would do for their children, but also cause the reader to question what choices and actions they would have made in a similar situation. I really admire Jamie making the love story in this book more than just the love between adults.

Bottomline: RED HILL is a well-written, attention-grabbing, action-packed, "zombie" apocalypse ride-for-your-life, filled with heartbreak and hope, romance and familial love, and felt like it could take place right outside my heavily-barricaded, shotgun-protected door, and I loved it. It gripped me from the start and held on strong, combining the suspense and action of a "zombie" outbreak with a realistic and current setting, and characters demonstrating the different perspectives of what this situation would do to someone. I also loved the strong themes of perseverance, love, family, and hope amongst tragedy. Well done, Ms. McGuire!

A Different Zombie Novel that Packs a Punch
By Jo Michaels
I saw this title was released when it appeared in a weekly meme on Heather's Book Chatter and just knew I had to pick up a copy. I loved Beautiful Disaster and couldn't imagine a book that held my attention as much as that one did. Obviously, Ms. McGuire could. I ran out and grabbed a copy of Red Hill from Amazon, only to devour it in one sitting. Time to move on to my review!

From a reader's perspective:
Holy moly, what can I say? This isn't your typical squishing of zombie heads kind of novel. Rather than focusing on the terror that would consume the planet if zombies rose, this one looked at the human element and the fallout of a disaster of this magnitude. When the whole world goes to crap, what are people thinking? What would they do for survival? Red Hill delves deeply into what makes people tick during a crisis, and shows how they can rise up and be more than they ever thought they could. Some of the horrible things that happen during times of upset are brought to light, and the evil that lives inside some people is waved under your nose like a smelly rag. I found myself punching the air a number of times, and wondering how in the hell Ms. McGuire could describe two people in the story I could relate with so strongly (Scarlet and Nathan). I was kept sitting on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, and sobbing like a little girl. One of the things I love about Jamie McGuire's writing is her ability to not go on tangents with description; there's just enough so I can paint the scene and the characters in my own head.

From an editor's perspective:
One or two misused words (peak rather than peek), but everything else was brilliant.

My rating:
+1 Star for giving me awesome zombie action
+1 Star for those well-rounded characters I felt for
+1 Star for great pacing and perfect word painting
+1 Star for making me cry and showing truth
+1 Star for the level of most excellent editing found in this book

Overall, 5 out of 5 stars! I'd give it ten if I could. Recommended to anyone who loves a nail-biter that will leave you with a book hangover because you were sad it came to an end.

Head for the hill!
By Julie Solorio
Review for Red Hill by Jamie McGuire
5 stars

Powerful, thought provoking, frightening, emotional and riveting. I would use all of these words to describe Red Hill by Jamie McGuire. McGuire hit a home run with this book. Not the kind of book that made me want to doodle Mrs. Maddox all over everything but excellent nonetheless. It was so very realistic, even while talking about the zombie apocalypse. I felt the fear, the hopelessness, the relief, the sadness, the determination, the terror, the confusion, the passion and the hope that these characters felt. Great Books can transport us to different worlds and I was definitely a resident of Red Hill for a few days.

Scarlett is a mother of two girls and is a tech at a hospital. After surviving living with a constantly angry man and having to protect her girls from that anger, Scarlett is used to a tough life. When the world she knows come crashing down around her, she has to stay safe in order to get to her girls who were picked up just before hell broke loose by their father.

"It's incredible, the way the imagination can physically affect the body. My heart rate had doubled, and I was beginning to sweat. The more my fear crept up, the more I kept reminding myself that my girls needed me. They were probably scared to death, and no matter what happened or what state they were in, I wanted to be with them." -Scarlett

Nathan's wife has just left him and their young daughter. He saw it coming but with a daughter that doesn't take change well and sometimes has episodes that can be consuming he has to fight harder than ever to be strong for himself and his little girl.

"I settled back into my seat, trying to play off my fear. Watching a movie about zombies is one thing. Watching zombies outside your window was another. The movies didn't talk about that. Well . . . maybe they did, but they didn't drive home how terrifying each moment truly was. I tried not to think about tomorrow, or that we would still be fighting for our lives every day from now on. I glanced back at Zoe, and choked back the sadness welling up in my throat. I didn't want her to grow up in a world like this." - Nathan

Miranda is a college girl with a cute VW bug. Not exactly the ideal vehicle for surviving a zombie invasion but Miranda is used to taking charge and fighting through what life throws at her. How will these strangers lives intersect as the world crumbles to the ground?

"I wasn't sure which old couple in the pictures were the owners of the home, but I liked them. The home they left behind made me feel safe, the love they left behind hopeful. The strangers in the pictures were fighting their own battle to survive like we were, and probably making their way to each other, too. At least that was what I wanted to believe. The wind picked up, moving the house just enough for the moaning to begin again. It was eerie, like the groans of the dead ones when they noticed prey and got excited about the prospect of feeding. Other than that, the night was quiet." -Miranda

These people along with their friends, some family, and even a couple strangers picked up as allies along the way are in the fight of their lives. They are witnessing horrors they have never imagined, they have to survive and adapt minute by minute. They are dealing with loss on a larger scale than they can comprehend. They are all making their way to a place they believe they can be safe. For Miranda it is her dad's ranch. For Scarlett it's a ranch she cleaned for a doctor she worked with. For Nathan it's a place he heard of that was out of the way enough to be safe according to some nice strangers he befriended along the way. They are all headed to Red Hill.

There are many twists and turns awaiting the alive as they fight to get to Red Hill in one piece. Some will find love and some stand to lose it all. In this new world, even the strong don't always survive. Are you brave enough to ride the road to Red Hill?

I loved this book! It had such rich characters and such a nice mix of suspense, romance, raw emotion and scariness. The scariness was dominant at times. I usually read late at night and sitting in my bed reading this book one night my phone pinged an email notification...and scared the crap out of me! I am such a wuss but this book being emerged in the world of Red Hill definitely had me a bit on edge. That being said, I would do it all over again.

How to Find God's Love is wonderful.
By Donna Dodson
This book is the very best book I have ever read to explain God's love for us & for salvation. It is very easy to read. It reads fast. I love the lines for comments & thoughts. The way this book reads will engage even those that hate to read. Just plain english & simple terms anyone can understand. Very, very good book!
I purchased this book before, after hearing Don Nori talk about it. I did not order five to be sent to people & receive one for myself, as they wanted. But I did order two. One for myself & one for my step-son. I have loaned my copy out so much that it is really showing wear & wanted two more to have to loan. I may have even purchased more of the book, but two was all they had.

This is a small, easy readable book that is non-threatening in presentation to someone who doesn't know Christ.
It is straight forward and easy to understand. The author does a good job in keeping the chapters short and explaining the plan of Salvation.

Robert Reich makes sense.
By Connie Gibson
I was introduced to a few of the ideas in this book by my pastor. I was intrigued by Reich's insights and was happy to have my thoughts on the subject put into eloquent words. This book would be for any one who is interested in how to begin to fix our country with a strong helping of less greed by the very rich.
