Dark and Disorderly, by Bernita Harris

I was standing there naked when my dead husband walked into my bathroom...

Lillie St. Claire is a Talent, one of a few who can permanently dispatch the spirits of the dead that walk the earth. Her skills are in demand in a haunted country, where a plague of ghosts is a civic nuisance.

But those skills are also feared by many citizens, who view Talents as near-demons. Her husband comes to see her as a Freak; so when Nathan dies after a car crash, she is relieved to be free of his increasingly vicious presence. Lillie expects to be haunted by Nathan's ghost, but not to become Suspect #1 for her husband's murder and reanimation.

But what's most surprising of all is the growing attraction between her and psi-crime detective John Thresher. He thinks that Lillie killed Nathan—and Nathan must agree, because his zombie is seeking revenge. Now she and Thresher must work together to solve her husband's murder—before his corpse kills her...

Dark and Intriguing
By akb--bookworm
** Received for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**

The Cover Art and the are what grabbed my attention. Happily, "Dark & Disorderly" lived up to the description and was a fun Urban Fantasy read with a fresh premise and storyline.

Lillie St. Claire is a Talent, able to see auras and dispatch ghosts in our modern world, which has officially recognized the existence of the paranormal and the need for people like Lillie. Unfortunately, someone is trying to kill Lillie and is using any method they can from using the specter of her recently deceased husband, to using zombies, to sabotaging her car. Nothing will stop them until she's dead. Psi-Cop Johnny Thresher has taken an interest in her case, but to Lillie it's never quite clear what his motives are.

What I liked:
1. Lillie--She's not the typical Urban Fantasy Heroine who is all ballsy, badass, mouthy, and a master of martial arts or fighting of some sort. But, she's not helpless either. She has always been ostracized because of her Talent, so she's a bit insecure and has few people she calls friends. However, she has a sense of justice and kindness that leads her to selflessly use her Talent to help others. Just the opening chapter had me feeling like she was real and relatable--she'd just been scared by the specter/zombie of her late husband and proceeds to turn on every light in the house and search every corner, under every bed, and inside each closet while holding a baseball bat. That would totally be me! She's not ruled by lust or emotion. She realizes she lives in the real world with real consequences.
2. Johnny--He's not your typical Alpha Male. Oh, he's Alpha still, but not over the top. He comes across as someone you'd know in real life, not some made up fantasy. He's shown up in town for who knows why with his own agenda. You're never really sure if he's helping Lillie or investigating Lillie.
3. Mystery and Storyline--Someone is out to get Lillie, but who and why? Clues are found along the way and it's a fun ride. The storyline was fresh and original, not a rehash of everything else on the market right now.

What didn't quite work for me:
1. Info Dumps--There were several times in the book that felt like info dumps. I found my eyes glazing over and losing interest and scanning ahead for more story. The info was useful in understanding the world Ms. Harris created, but I really think it could have been condensed.
2. Word Choices--Another reviewer pointed this out as well and I have to agree. Several times the author used "big words" when simpler words would have worked better and improved the story flow. It's just not normal for people to say things like "impugn." It reminds me of movies made in the 40' and 50's and not something that people say today. This was a very minor annoyance and was easily overlooked.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this little gem. Despite the rough writing in some patches, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read. It was refreshing to pick up an Urban Fantasy with NO vampires or werewolves. This story is not a romance, but does have a romantic undertone done just right. I'm looking forward to where Ms. Harris takes these characters.

Reading with Tequila
By Jennifer Sicurella
I never had a clue what was coming next while reading Dark and Disorderly. It was fantastic. Every twist and turn was a complete surprise and you just don't get those kind of experiences often enough.

I loved Lillie. She's strong, determined, has been through hell and she's not going to take it anymore. Still she cries for others pain and vomits in the face of grisly death. She's a balanced, realistic character that's easy to fall in love with.

There were some obscure mythological/paranormal terms that could have been described in more detail as they were not easily understood through context alone. Those with an education in myths and legend and extremely avid readers of fiction involving lesser known paranormal creatures will love the way they are worked into the story. The author writes in a style that expects readers to already have some knowledge on the subjects and doesn't drone on by explaining every new thing.

Lillie exorcises ghosts. I'm not really into ghosts stories, but I don't mind them in the background. The ghosts are a huge part of Dark and Disorderly, but they're shown through Lillie's unfrightened, logical point of view. Seeing them this way, instead of through the eyes of a haunting victim, made them a really interesting and exciting part of the story. If all ghost stories were told this way, I could easily become a fan of the theme.

You never quite know what's going on with detective Johnny and that's what makes the book all the more engrossing. Why is he so interested in her? Is it because of her ability? Does he consider her a suspect? Is he merely attracted to her? Once you think you know his motives, he goes in an entirely new direction.

I could go on at length about how wonderful this book is, but the point is that Dark and Disorderly is a twisted and completely unexpected paranormal thriller that shocked me time and again. Bernita Harris is a fantastic new voice in the paranormal genre.

A Great Start to a New Series
By Melissa Books and Things
This book is the first book in a series of Lillie St. Claire. Her past was not happy and was in fact orphaned at the age of 5. She has had to endure a lot of prejudice because of her "Talent" at an early age and so has no solid sense of self. When she meets the charismatic and sociopathic former husband, Nathan, the torture continues until she doesn't know what is true and false in the world. Despite this, she finds some strength but never feels strong since she constantly has her husband's abusive talk in her head. Her talents and a sudden rise in paranormal activity bring the attention of the feds and particularly Johnny Thresher. Thresher becomes enamored, but his police attitude doesn't allow himself to fully fall into Lillie's spell easily. They both fight an attraction all the while trying to figure out exactly who killed her husband and who reanimated him. Also, who could be wanting Lillie dead as well?

This was a fun book full of mystery and lots of paranormal activity. Not only do we have the mystery of Nathan, but a personal mystery of who and what exactly Lillie is as well. My main criticism is Lillie herself. I understand that she had been through a lot, but her constant whining about not being strong started to get on my nerves a bit. Now, if perhaps more of her abuse with her husband was revealed even in her private thoughts it might have seemed less whiny. Not that I wanted to be a voyeur, but it would have put that constant worry in a more comparative light. It would have made her strengths even stronger as well. I do think that as we see more of Lillie, however, I think that worry will get less and she will be more confident in her self and in her own strengths. I personally want to see what happens to Lillie as the story goes on.

I give this book 3 1/2 stars. It was an interesting first book and I think we really start to understand and get to know Lillie St. Claire.
