Get ready to feel bad! An autistic-coded (never explicitly stated) boy struggles against his darker impulses, with the help of his naively trusting mother. But he also fights the future. A threatening group of government workers comes to him regularly to ask him to find and bring about a specific future from a multiverse of options. However, the only way they've been able to find to activate his powers is with pain and fear. And not his own. His mother's.
This is one of those stories that will make you VERY nervous about having children. Not only for the possibility of raising someone you can't understand, but also the reality that there are infinite futures for them you can't imagine or control. I've listened to the audio production of this story from the Drabblecast twice now, and each time, I end feeling a bit chilled. I think that will continue for quite a while.

Moving and captivating.

Most of these Tor.com short stories showcase some aspect of one of the author's longer novel. These short stories are set in the same universe and/or provide the same characters in a prequel or side adventure from that of the more developed story in the novel.
This one appears to be a stand-alone short story. It involves a boy who appears to have autism. This boy is special in another way; he is visited by a mysterious group that has a technology that lets him pick out one futures from the many futures that are possible. The one's that are not selected remain as "old dead futures" in the world that the boy visits.
The story involves the boy seeking some escape from his own future.
It is a short story; it shouldn't take more than five or ten minutes of your time.
I found the story to be captivating and moving.
