How To Like Everything: A Utopia, by Paul Shepheard

How To Like Everything is a utopia. 'Utopia' is a word invented five hundred years ago at the start of the modern age as a description of the ideal society. It's composed of Latin parts that taken together mean 'no place' or 'nowhere'. We now use the word utopia to mean an impossible dream of perfection. How To Like Everything recasts the actual world, the forever-changing world we live in, as utopia: to make the impossible possible. This is not a dry academic debate. Paul Shepheard takes on his subject by threading questions, evidence and logic through hilarious, moving and thought-provoking stories. The action is set in the complicated city of Amsterdam, where he gets stuck in the briars of love affairs, existential decisions and conflicts with complete strangers. And the philosophy? He is a materialist. His utopia hinges on the question of whether there can be anything other than the present moment.

A wonderful journey...
By TallCat
Paul Shepheard's latest is another companionable and highly enjoyable trip with a modern materialist philosopher who also happens to be an architect. Along the way, he treats you to spectacular off-the-beaten-track architectural marvels (Ignatius Loyola's private chapel in Rome, and the Aachen Cathedral); musings on art (Zimbabwe House in London, and the Head Made of Frozen Blood); marvelous discussions with an interesting assortment of characters; an outsider's inside view of intriguing Amsterdam; and his philosophical thinking on How To Like Everything.

I truly enjoy his refreshingly upbeat, first-person style of narration, which brings the reader vividly along on the journey and into whatever is happening. More, please, Mr Shepheard!

Almost enjoyably bad.

As I read this "book," I get angrier and angrier that someone published it, and that someone apparently wrote a grant to support it. It began with his suggesting that we have night and day because the earth goes around the sun rather than rotating on its own axis. It continued with his incessant discussion about how he is writing a book (shut up and just write it, will you??), then there was the chapter that he couldn't end with his own wit, so he just told an Adam Sandler story, verbatim. Then there was the missing chapter 3. Yep, 2 to 4, just like that. Then the name-dropping -- "I met Rod Stewart." Then, just when it couldn't get any worse, he slipped into. . . wait for it!. . . actual bragging about sexual conquest. Then bragging about being asked to write a scholarly article. Then, of course, the pure gibberish artspeak. If all the wasted words, solipsism, egotism, and writing-while-drunk were removed from this tiny book, it wouldn't be a book at all. And it shouldn't be a book at all.

Unusually about everything
By Sam
I loved this book. I've read it twice now and I'm still not quite sure what it is. Is it a memoir, or an art theory book, or a love story, or a travel book? It's not like anything else I've read. Maybe it's all those things at the same time and that's what's so great about it. Also, it's serious but written with humor, and that's unusual too. I don't agree with everything he says but that made it even better somehow because it really made me think.
