Beautiful Romance! A Must Read!

I love the way Misty Evans gives you a little sexy fun between Rife and Keva, before Keva has to tell Rife who he really is, and things get serious. Rife can't understand why his desire for Keva is so strong. He can't be next to her without losing all control, and this is driving him crazy. After all, he is a professional FBI profiler. But Keva knows the truth about Rife, and she's waited a thousand years to reunite with him--her reincarnated soul mate, Kai, and to correct the wrong she's believes she done a thousand years ago that destroyed her people. And she's waited for the only man she's ever loved--Kai who's come back as Rife. Enann, who's Kai's half-brother, has also waited a thousand years to take his revenge on Reva and Kai.

I fell in love with Keva and Rife. Keva is strong-willed, beautiful, and a sexy women. Her strength and endurance--waiting a thousand years for her soul mate to come back to her--had my heart breaking. And Rife is sensitive, sensual, caring, strong and gorgeous. Well, I just fell head-over-heels for him. Misty Evans definitely understands the true meaning of what soul mates are, and she writes it perfectly. The love and steamy romance between Rife and Keva made my heart swoon. The storyline and characters in Soul Survivor are strong, beautiful, and well-developed. This is a book I'll be reading over and over again. I recommend Soul Survivor as a must read! And a romance you will fall in love with.

I have to say that this story was quite the roller coaster ride for me. And still having finished it can't really decide if I fully liked it or not. The best I can do is layout first my likes then my dislikes about this book.

First off, the story as a whole was very well written. The mythology was brought to life and I got into the whole actual CSI type feel to it in the beginning. As writing goes it was very strong. I was impressed, and it was really what kept me reading if I am being honest. The author was very detailed, and at times it was mundane details that lost me a bit. I do understand that the author was making an attempt to world build. However, it dripped on till I found myself not really caring anymore.

As far as the characters go, I don't think Rife St. Cloud was Alpha enough for me if I am being honest. He seemed almost depressing at times and I didn't even build an image of him in my head like I do with most male leads. As far as Keva was concerned, I think she stole the alpha role. I think the author created such a strong and independent female lead, that the love story became unbelievable that she would need a man.

I do get that she has spent 1,000 year alone, I guess that was where the independence came from, but it was so dominant to her character build that I didn't believe the love connection between Keva and Rife. I didn't connect with them as a couple at all. They were a bit undimentional. That saddens me because I did enjoy the authors writing. I was more intrigued with the story rather than the love story. I wasn't feeling the Native American theme; however it was interesting because I understood all the magic involved.

I guess you can't win them all. I will pick up another book from this author because this seems like a stand alone, and I would like to see if her other characters and their love stories are better developed.

A thousand years is a long time to wait for your one true love, even harder trying to convince him that they belong together. Passion burns between them but mistakes have be atoned for and lessons learned so they can move past this. At the same time someone else has also waited the same long to extract his revenge on the star crossed lovers. Sound easy? Of course not, and Evans manages to make this beautiful romance a heart pounding suspense too!

This is a fun sexy read that is typical of Misty Evan's writing style, with wonderfully crafted characters and a romance to make even a hardened critic smile. If you love time travel romances, this one has to go to the top of your TBR list!

Sisters is the first major history of the pivotal role played by nuns in the building of American society. Nuns were the first feminists, argues Fialka. They became the nation's first cadre of independent, professional women. Some nursed, some taught, and many created and managed new charitable organizations, including large hospitals and colleges.

In the 1800s nuns moved west with the frontier, often starting the first hospitals and schools in immigrant communities. They provided aid and service in the Chicago fire, cared for orphans and prostitutes in the California Gold Rush and brought professional nursing skills to field hospitals run by both armies in the Civil War. Their work was often done in the face of intimidation from such groups as the Know Nothings and the Ku Klux Klan.

In the 1900s they built the nation's largest private school and hospital systems and brought the Catholic Church into the civil rights movement. As their numbers began to decline in the 1970s, many sisters were forced to take professional jobs as lawyers, probation workers, managers and hospital executives because their salaries were needed to support older nuns, many of whom lacked a pension system. Currently there are about 75,000 sisters in America, down from 204,000 in 1968. Their median age is sixty-nine.

In Sisters, Fialka reveals the strength of the spiritual capital and the unprecedented reach of the caring institutions that religious women created in America.

When Wall Street Journal reporter Fialka set out to tell the story of America's Catholic nuns, he knew he faced a daunting challenge. Church histories contained little about the women he calls "America's first feminists," though they built 800 hospitals and more than 10,000 private schools. Since doing them justice would require volumes, Fialka decided to use one large order, the Sisters of Mercy, as a model, mentioning some of the other 400 communities where appropriate. The approach makes for a well-told history of these remarkable women from the time of their arrival in America in 1790 to the present, when their numbers have dwindled considerably. Fialka's account is rich with anecdotes, many told by the sisters themselves; however, his reporting makes this more than a sentimental history. The author ferrets out statistics and interviews experts to find out why these women have begun to disappear from Catholic life. In his look toward a seemingly bleak future, he includes several hopeful notes, including a chapter about a community in Nashville that is flourishing with its traditional approach to religious life. The product of a Catholic school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Fialka sprinkles his account with personal recollections and writes sympathetically of a group that often has been maligned and caricatured. Nuns will appreciate his treatment of their lives, as will Catholics pondering a church with diminishing numbers of the women who helped shape it.

Dubbing nuns "America's first feminists," he chronicles their journey westward, establishing a host of parochial schools, hospitals, and charitable institutions across a boisterous and wide-ranging frontier. In addition to educating and nursing several generations of Americans, the various orders of sisters also represented the first organized groups of women who operated and, in a limited sense, competed in a man's world. A spiritual vocation as well as an opportunity for personal fulfillment, the sisterhood offered a viable option for both pious and independent females. "Where have all the Sisters gone . . . "

Boy, if this isn't an eye-opener! Not a particularly scholarly treatise (thank God), the book nonetheless chronicles well the incredible story of the impact on our American history and way of life "the Sisters" have had. Living in the "heyday" of the 50's - early 60's, and having had the blessings of a parochial education, I was not only mesmerized by Fialka's exploration of the scope and breadth and depth of the impact nuns in America have had, but deeply saddened to get a fuller sense of the decline of this influence in our society. I'm no feminist, but if any women in our history deserve greater recognition and honor for what they contributed to our lives it's these women. Fialka's narrative bounces around a little, but he keeps you focused on the mostly selfless dedication many of these Sisters lived by. The stereotypical nun whacking your knuckles with a ruler obscures the realities Fialka chronicles in case after case of the love and devotion so many of these Sisters lavished on their students (or patients). His discussion of the causes of the decline of the Sisters as a force in our society cites numerous influences, not least of which were the upheavals in all corners of our social fabric in the mid-late-sixties, nor the disruption (my word) of the "Catholic eco-system" resulting from so much misguided interpretations of Vatican II doctrine. Good book. Read it, revel in your memories, and weep for its demise -- America's great loss.

Extremely interesting book, combines history and information

Sisters: Catholic Nuns and the Making of America is an
overview of the influence and contributions of nuns in the
vast American land. There are a few statistics, some
interviews, and a great deal of history. History can be
a very slow read. It can be to dense to wade through.
But Fialka does a great job of presenting history in a
way that is not only interesting, but also enjoyable to
read. The only sad part, of course, comes in the latter
part of the book when he writes of the decline of so
many of the sisterhoods. Some of the decline was fast and
intense, some has been slower - but all of it seems to
be painful. There are a few glimmers of hope, though.
Some of the work done by the Dominican Sisters of Nashville
and the Oblate Sisters of Providence is wonderful.

Well-written history of women with guts and compassion

By the time I entered a Catholic elementary school in 1980, only one elderly sister was rumored to be residing in the church's convent. Two years later, the building was used for storage and our music room. Today, daily obituaries show how accomplished many of these women were - receiving an education that would have been unheard of for most women in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. It was not until I read this book that I really understood just how important these brave women -- and in many cases, young girls -- were in the development of this country, the nursing of its sick, and the education of its youth. This book skillfully explained the complex reasons for the sudden demise and division in the sisterhood today. Even the non-Catholic will be moved to feel concern for aging nuns and gratitude for their efforts. This book also offered a glimmer of hope as it investigated the growth of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of reading this book as much as I enjoyed learning what it had to tell me.

A fantastic angels & demons read!

The novel opens with Jahel, an angel, in the last place you would expect to find an angel, trapped in a cage, ready to be sold to whomever pays the right price. She has been captured in Hellsgate, a city populated by demons and lost mortals, caught between the mortal realm and Hell itself. She came to Hellsgate to find the soul of her former charge, feeling she failed to guard her. Instead, she found herself being purchased by a demon, an incubus named Kenan who, unbeknownst to her, plans to seduce her and steal her soul to add to his collection. Instead, he helps her, falls in love with her, and breaks all the rules in order to protect her.

Too many times, in novels with the theme of good versus evil, one or both sides are too much, either too good or too evil. For a mere mortal such as I, I know that rarely is anyone purely good or purely evil. I very much liked that in Demon's Fall, the author created a whole world, one in which there are shades of grey. In essence, both Jahel and Kenan have very much the same role, to collect souls, just for different ends. The interplay between the angel and the demon as they fell in love was interesting as the themes of good versus evil was shown in a way that made it seem as if it were coming from it's own pantheon or belief system, rather than using the traditional Christian views.

I also liked the fact that, while erotic, the sex in the novel wasn't gratuitous. It was integral to the story in that it both illustrated a non-traditional view of angels and demons and it enhanced the romance of the story. I would definately recommend this book!

A good read but the short length hinders it

One thing I will have to warn people about is that this is a very short story, only taking up about 70 pages. For some the events in this story will happen a little too quickly & they'll long for just a little bit more detail, mostly because this is a rich world that Lee has spun & they want just a little more depth to everything.

Kenan is an incubus, a demon who seduces human women out of their souls, forgetting about them once the challenge is done & over with. When he comes across the angel Jahel in the marketplace at Hellsgate he has the unbearable urge to touch her. Sure that her soul would make an intriguing addition to his collection of souls, Kenan promptly purchases the angel with the intent on slowly seducing her our of her soul. He's sure that a little kindness, as well as helping Jahel find the soul she came almost all this way to find, will help his natural incubus seduction skills. What he didn't plan on was losing his heart.

As a short story this tale both works & doesn't work at times. What works in this story is that Lee has created an intriguing world full of possibilities. The idea of a stolen soul turning into a coin (leaving the former owner alive) & using it as currency in the demon world is something that many readers will find a nice touch. What also works is the heat that Lee has made between our two main characters- it's very tangible, very erotic, & for the most part comes across rather naturally (as natural as it can be for a demon & an angel).

What doesn't work is mostly due to the short length of the story. Jahel & Kenan have an almost instant attraction to each other & don't seem to fight it, something that might irk some readers. The plot for this story moves along at an almost lightening speed & while this is a good story, many will just wish that Lee had stretched the story out a little longer just so she could have explored more of the potential of this world & its inhabitants. Some parts of it just felt a little underdeveloped.

Overall though, this is a pretty decent story & one that will thrill many readers. I hope that this story is merely a setup for more stories to come, as developing all of this for one 70-ish page story would sort of be a bit of a waste. This was a fun story to read (especially with the Snow White references), so I would recommend this for most romance readers out there.

I'm always intrigued by stories that feature an angel-demon dynamic and interweave Biblical beliefs. I won't lie - I have a degree in Biblical Studies so I'm a bit of a snob for when things are taken and twisted to be something else. However, those that either do it well or create their own world are the ones to be really admired.

Demon's Fall creates it's own world; I was never certain what time period to call it, which made it all that much more interesting. The bulk of the story takes place in Hellsgate, a city of mixed mortal and demonic population just this side of Hell. Here demons and mortals co-exist. The worldbuilding was really cool; the author acknowledges the self-serving nature of both angels and demons; angels want humans to go to Heaven because it's better - demons want humans souls to commit to hell, because in both instances the angel or demon gets something. There is also a reference to a third path humans can take but it's only mentioned in passing.

Demon's Fall does take some Biblical prophecy and craft it to its own purposes. This could be cliché; I know I've seen so many things that twist the book of Revelations that I almost squirm and fight to not roll my eyes - but the way that it was done in Demon's Fall was just really cool. It no longer seemed as if the author was twisting Christianity to fit the story, but that we were talking about something completely different - a whole other pantheon and prophecy.

The novella is, despite my long winded assessment of the setting and prophecy of the story, a love story. A demon purchases a caged angel and proceeds to fall in love with her. The story is told from Kenan's point of view, which I thought was interesting because in the long run it was Jahel who had more to lose. My biggest problem with most romance novellas is that the actual step to falling in love rarely feels plausible. I will admit that the romance didn't 100% convince me that they were in love, and perhaps that was why - oh wait, that would be a spoiler ;D about three fourths of the way through I was liking the build of the romance, but it's that last chapter that sealed it for me and made me wanna go - aawweee.

Demon's Fall is also an erotic novella, so yes, there is sex and it is graphic in nature - it's erotic. But despite the titillating factor it is motivated by the story, it's not just sex for the sake of having sex depicted on the page. On a purely logistical nature, it's interesting to see how one would manage wings and sex.

Not for younger readers, or readers who are easily offended by warping traditional Christian beliefs. But if you like a short romance that is both erotic and fantastical - read it. I liked it a lot.

good practical resource

I bought this book on the recommendation of one of my colleagues. We used it quite a bit during review for our forensic pathology boards and in our day to day practice. The images and descriptions are great and there is even a good pictoral description on how to dissect the conduction system, which by the way is difficult to find elsewhere. It is a user friendly book with good information and images.

A Vespa Riding, Cat-Burglar Goldilocks? Yup. Chaos Tryst is a [deep breath] flat out funny, urban fantasy, romantic fairytale-retelling, [exhale] featuring a cat-burglar Goldilocks and her shape-shifting Russian bear (woo, can he tango!). It's a rollicking romp, y'all.

Goldilocks isn't an easy girl to like.She's guilty of breaking and entering, dealing in black market porridge, anddismantling orderly households. My grandmother would have called her a "thievinghussy" and closed the curtains. I agree thieves deserve a good kick in thepants, but the idea of re-envisioning the story as a "comedic urban fantasy, romantic fairy tale-retelling, featuring acat-burglar Goldilocks and her shape-shifting Russian bear" inspired me.

Cat burglars are intriguing but didn'tquite feel right for my version of the character, Ariana Golde. I wanted togive her a new and more likeable skill, and make her the opposite of a thief.Ah ha, the answer was in the opposite. If I flipped the purpose of Ariana's jobher habit of breaking into other Faebles' homes would be justifiable. In thatmoment she became a returner, amember of a magical guild who retrieve stolen objects and return them to theirrightful owners. Their magic also makes them infallible--kind of...

Of course, to tell a fun story, I had toturn things upside down and explore what happens when Ari's returner magicfails, she mistakenly steals a statue, and is pitted against a sexy bearshifter by the name of Maksim Medved.

I'll give you a hint:It's called Chaos Tryst and I hear it'sa rollicking romp!

3.5 stars - An oddball mix, but I liked 'Goldilocks' and her 'bear'

Chaos Tryst fit very nicely into the fairy tale romance spin off 'kick' I've been on lately, since it stars the golden dread-locked Ariana Golde in the role of "Goldilocks" and bear shifter Maksim Medved with small supporting appearances by his brothers, as the 'three bears'. Here Ariana is not a wandering child, she's the daughter of two gods and a 'retriever' which is not exactly a thief - that's good, because with her affinity for chaos she'd be a pretty inept one. The pair comes together on a bungled retrieval - Ari is interrupted while removing an artifact from the Medved's abode. So it is not too surprising that Maks is not too appreciative of the distinction between thief and 'retriever' since the item which Ariana claims 'belongs' to someone else - or else she wouldn't be liberating it - has been in his family since his father crafted as a gift for his mother. Even though the truth of Ari's claim is proven by magic, Maks isn't about to give up so easily and attaches himself to Ari as she goes about her business, determined to confront Ari's client when it comes time for Ari to drop off the item. And since Maks also has a talent for chaos which interacts with Ari's in ways that are sometimes explosive, together the two or them create a fair amount of mayhem.

While I enjoyed the idea of the more archaic elements anachronistically woven in with modern day trappings, and the mix of beings from fairy tales, classic fantasy, and myths, the story would have benefited from a bit more definition in the world building. There are elements which make it seem like this might not be a pure fantasy world, and there are humans mixed in with the mythic and fairy tale beings, Bluetooth, and Maks' top notch kitchen, but it is never clear whether this is a corner of our world or if the world of fairy tales has just progressed from the medieval times to the modern. And since not as many readers are familiar with Japanese and African deities and myths, slipping in just a tad more explanation about why Maks calls Ari kitsune (a Japanese fox spirit) and about Inari and Anansi (a Japanese goddess of luck and change, and an African spider trickster god, who are Ari's parents) would have helped too.

I really liked both Ari and Maks. Part of the pair's appeal is that they are both well fleshed out. Ari sees herself as a misfit but she's a happy playful one and she's determined to get grumpy bear Maks to smile, and she secretly nurtures a long held crush for Maks that becomes 'more' over the course of the story. I enjoyed Maks who tries to resist Ari, due to the fact that she brings out the part of his nature that has left him feeling responsible for his parents fate, the nature he's tried to contain ever since, but fortunately his inner bear isn't taking 'no' for an answer.

So when the last page was turned, I still enjoyed Chaos Tryst, largely because I am very character-centric. And even though with just a bit more clarity in the world building department, this would have been great, what was here was still a good fantasy romp with just a touch of romance.

A Romp in Faire land

Actually a 3.5

This is not normally the genre I would read but I had received it as a prize during the Fall Romance Yahoo Group so I went ahead and read it. Even though it is not typically a book I look forward I did still enjoy reading it. It was very enjoyable and seemed like a fun romp through faire land. It was fun to see the characters overcoming one situation after another. The ending was a surprise twist and added to the fun. Overall a very satisfying read.

This has to be one of the most exciting reads I've read in a long time. The retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears is brought up to date with the authors humour and modern tricks to boot.

Midnight's Promise Part 4

Oh fans of the Dark Warriors have your tissues handy for this one. Malcolm is the last Warrior to find his happily ever after so there is a huge amount of closure with this part of the serialized Midnight’s Promise. Donna closed a chapter in her magical Highlander’s world superbly. I stress this chapter due to the Dark Kings books that will be coming out soon.

Jason has proven to be a master manipulator of the worst sort. He has used his dark magic and scheming ways to maneuver the druids and warriors for the last time. Malcolm has discovered he has so much to live for and he is willing to do anything for the love he has discovered for Evie. This is such an exciting conclusion to Midnight’s Promise. All the warriors, druids, and dragons that we have come to know are present doing what they do best.

Such a beautiful way to conclude the series

I have been reading these books for years and while I know the stories will continue through the Dragon Kings, I find myself sad to see it end. She did a wonderful job in wrapping these books up, through them all we've felt all the emotions of the characters, exactly like you should in a good book. Malcolm's story was the right "ending", and I am thrilled to see what awaits from here.

Female main character constantly makes annoying and stupid decisions. She is the person in a horror movie who unwisely decides to go outside in the middle of the night and everyone knows she will be the first killed - except in this book, after a series of inept decisions from which she does not die, she somehow defeats the villain with unknown strength.

Espinosa's a top rate policeman!

It's a catchy narrative hook. A young man approaches Inspector Espinosa of the Rio de Janiero police to tell him of a most bizarre prediction: that he knows a murder is about to happen and he knows who the murderer is-himself!

Thus, "Southwesterly Wind begins, the third in the Inspector Espinosa series by Brazilian author Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza. In translation, Garcia-Roza's compelling police procedural is well worth the time. Over the course of the trilogy, the author has developed and presented a respectable policeman and story line.

Gideon (thirty) is a single young man who lives alone with his mother. At his last birthday party, a seer approaches him to predict that before his next birthday, he will murder someone. Unsettling, of course, and Gideon finally yields to the intense pressure of such a prediction to arrange a meeting with Espinosa, in which he confesses of the prediction. He asks for help.

Espinosa is a bit skeptical but a sixth sense tells him not to dismiss the young man so easily. And before long, a co-worker and friend of Gideon's is found dead in the subway, having been run over by the train.

Then another death, this time the clairvoyant who'd made the prediction in the first place. Espinosa is left to tie the clues together and to solve the case, as all the evidence indicates that, despite the fact Gideon knew both victims, he has alibis in both instances.

Garcia-Roza not only masterfully handles the police procedural here, but also underscores the work with landscape and atmosphere of Rio. Espinosa's mannerisms, his personal thoughts and developments which make him into a human being, all are woven intricately into this work. He's a policeman we can admire and respect, a character "worth knowing."

This is a series that should continue. The publisher's comments indicate that the author is a great success in Brazil. Now we have him here in the States. It's a welcomed immigration.

A very low-key South American procedural. It will get under your skin like the sinister premonition that sets the story in motion. The enigmatic finish will nag at you for days.

A weird prediction of murder

The story begins with a curious visit to Inspector Espinosa by a young man named Gabriel. A psychic told Gabriel he'd commit a murder before his next birthday. He's upset and wants Espinosa to investigate.

Most cops would tell Gabriel to get lost, since there's no crime yet and no reason to think that a mild fellow like Gabriel would commit a murder. But Espinosa takes Gabriel's suffering seriously.

As he investigates into this non-case, a fascinating picture emerges of Gabriel's intense personality, his relationship with his mother, and his involvement with an attractive female co-worker.

Essentially this is a simple story full of psychological complications. There's a southwesterly wind blowing, which is a harbinger of change and seems ominously in keeping with the off-balance behavior of the characters.

Even Espinosa is on the verge of changes. After ten years of living alone, he's beginning to be concerned that the most consistent women in his life are his cleaning lady and his 13-year-old neighbor Alice. So he gets interested in a puppy. And a new woman.

Eventually Espinosa's imaginary case becomes a real case.

This book is fun because of the oddity of the situation and the personalities involved. I really like Espinosa, who is awfully bookish and sensitive for a cop. Whatever he does or thinks interests me. The Espinosa mysteries are well written and unconventional - always a treat.
