Puts you in the mood...
By J.D. Romann, 'Whet' author
...the holiday mood and that other kind of mood.
5 stars for Harper Fox: My favorite Harper Fox story to date. I first read a Harper Fox story in another Christmas anthology, Men Under the Mistletoe, and I then went on to read her Haunted Moor novel. This one beats all of them. High-stakes suspense and intense love story, all in one. Her settings are as integral to the plot and as well-drawn as the characters. Couldn't help but fall for this very real man in a real kilt and his foreign lover. Love, love, loved it. Hated to see it end. I kept wishing it took up more of the book than the other stories.
Josh Lanyon: Can't go wrong with Josh Lanyon and this cute twist on a man with a shady past who gets three characters knocking on his door on Christmas Eve and who has to face the wrongs he's committed. Lanyon always knocks it out of the park.
Z.A. Maxfield: I adored this story by an author I hadn't read before. Super sweet but not cloying or saccharine, a nice balance in a book with the grittier Harper Fox story. Charming but somehow believable modern twist on a Dickensian orphan tale.
As for the other story, sigh, I don't like leaving negative reviews, but, to keep my overall review honest, I wish this one had gone through another edit. The story had good bones, but it didn't all hang together, scenes would jump in ways that confused me, dialogue was sometimes hard to track, and I kept getting bumped out of the read by things like the hair color of one main character changing (at first I thought it was because of a youthful dye job, but, no, it's both black and blonde on the same modern day), etc. But a sweet story at its core.
Still, an anthology just perfect for the holidays and an introduction to some m/m authors. I liked this one a bit better than Men under the Mistletoe, which also had great Harper Fox and Josh Lanyon stories, another new author I quite liked, and one story I have yet to bring myself to finish reading. A nice mix with something for everybody.

Wonderful Christmas Collection!

Mistletoe at Midnight -- 4 Stars
Caleb and Owen were each others first loves. Caleb was sent away when they were 17 and Caleb didn't say goodbye or let Owen know where he was. 15 years later, at a holiday retreat with his parents and brother, Owen is reunited with Caleb. Small world.
I kind of felt bad for Owen, too, because his mom is always trying to fix him up with someone. This Christmas gathering is no different and she invited someone from Owen''s more recent past. Can't imagine why that didn't turn out well...
I enjoyed this story quite a lot. Both Caleb and Owen needed to grow up before getting together for real. Now, with both of them on successful career paths and neither of them have really gotten over the other, maybe they have a chance.
Nine Lights Over Edinburgh -- 4.5 stars
This story doesn't have a lot of romance, but it still grabbed me right away and didn't let go. James and Toby were made for one another and what better mate for a cop than someone else whose job is dangerous.
Toby is (or was) Mossad and James a Detective Inspector, so both are very used to danger. Toby lost his last partner, and lover, on the job and he and James meet when Toby is on special assignment during the internal investigation of what went down on his last Mossad op.
James and Toby save each other in many ways and when they finally come together it is explosive. Very hot. And very sweet.
I Heard Him Exclaim -- 3 Stars
I thought this story was pretty cute and I got plenty of warm fuzzy from it. The overboard Santa thing, however, got to be more than a little much. I'm glad this wasn't a full length novel or I would not have been able to finish it.
That said, Chandler and Poppy trust Steve way too much way too fast. If it was just Chandler, I'd say go for it. But Chandler is also responsible for a 5 year old, so, I'd say he'd tone back the trust just a bit.
Like I said, it was a cute story, but not my favorite in this collection.
Icecapade -- 5 Stars
This is the second story by Josh Lanyon that I have read and it was just as good as the first. Icecapade was my favorite in this collection.
Noel and Robert had one night of passion 10 years ago. Unfortunately, they were on opposite sides of the law back then with Robert working for the FBI and Noel being a jewel thief. Now, however, Noel has gone the straight (career-wise, anyhow). He never really got over Robert, however, so he is surprised (and hopeful) to see Robert on his doorstep on Christmas Eve.
The story telling here was terrific. Robert and Noel play off each other wonderfully and I thought the pacing and wrap up was top notch. I can't wait to read more of Josh Lanyon's books.

Mistletoe at Midnight By LB Gregg
Not a fan. Owen's Mom was an unbearable busybody, the two MC's were boring and had no real connection (in my opinion), and I thought Caleb really brushed over the fact that he totally disappeared 10 years ago with no word. Just felt annoyed and frustrated. 2 stars
Nine Lights Over Edinburgh By Harper Fox
Again, not a huge fan. It starts with McBride's police partner essentially seducing him because his boss wants him investigated. And then when that all comes out, McBride is totally cool with it, and it all "No hard feelings, Anthony." WTF?!? Is that a normal thing, "Oh, I know I'm supposed to trust you completely, and instead, you went behind my back, pretended to be gay, had sex with me, and reported all my failing to my supervisor. But I get it man." I mean, at least Anthony wasn't the love interest, but starting the novella like that felt so insanely unrealistic, that I couldn't get into the rest of the fic. Toby was pretty hot though, and I did like him and McBride together, but it really did feel too rushed. I think the author tried to accomplish too much in too little time. 2 stars
I Heard Him Exclaim By Z.A. Maxfield
This was my favorite of the stories. I'm not normally a huge fan of kid-centric stories, but I thought this one was fabulous and had a lot of depth. The premise sounded kind of hokey, and I wasn't expecting to enjoy it much, but I really loved it. The characters were great, and the connection between the two MC's was wonderful. Super hot and wonderfully sweet. This is exactly how I like my Christmas short stories! 4 stars
Icecapade by Josh Lanyon
This was my second favorite. I thought the characters were both really interesting, and I liked the contrast of the FBI agent and the jewel thief. But I really had a hard time understanding what Robert would get out of the relationship by going back to Noel. Noel is a former jewel thief, who screwed him over 10 years ago (quite literally), and then proceeds to write books that end up sabotaging Robert's career, and pretty much make him a laughingstock. I just didn't get the appeal there, especially because it had been 10 years since they'd spoken. Good writing, and I actually did like both of the characters, but since we didn't see Robert's POV and I thought he was the majorly wronged party, I had a hard time understanding why he'd want to try things with Noel, which prevented me from loving this. 3 stars
