Fun, Short Read

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Having not read the Dark Warriors books at all, this world was brand new to me. Overall, it was a fun and quick read that included a brief romance, some steamy scenes, some magic, and a unique world.

This book was a very short story that details the romance between Dale and Rennie. Having just come off his time working for the bad guys (under duress), Dale is on the run from everything and being pulled towards some sexy good Druid magic. Rennie is lonely and feeling down around the holidays, determined to hide away in her home to avoid touching people and consequently giving them random visions.

The two flawed main characters made for some good chemistry and interesting story. Druids are not typically my "thing" when in it comes to paranormal books, but I would be interested in seeing what the other books in this series look like. Short stories are inherently hard for me to review, because they always leave me wanting more, which I guess is the point? At any rate, this one was a good change from my usual reading.

midnight's surrender-dark-warriors-donna-grantDale surrendered his life so that Aisley could have hers. So why is he still alive? He isn’t sure. But one thing he does know is that he’s tired of working for evil and wants to live for himself now.

And, ever since he woke up after the selmyr attack, he has been plagued with dreams of a druid. In his waking hours the pure mie magic calls to him. And, now that magic has brought him to the Isle of Coll and to the stunning druid, Rennie. But when evil threatens her, he will sacrifice anything to save her, even his own life!

After reading what I presume was the last book of this series, Midnight’s Promise, based on its ending with everything tied up in nice neat bows, I was stoked for a chance to read one last Dark Warriors story; even if it is a about a warrior that was on the side of evil throughout the series.

But I’m sad to say that this book just didn’t do it for me.

First of all, I found how accepting of everything Rennie was to be unbelievable. She wakes up to a strange large man in her house, who claims she hit her head and he brought in the house. She doesn’t question it, but invites him to stay the night. And, before the night is out she’s having sex with this complete stranger? And, they’re in love by the next day? She comes off as a bit desperate to me. Also, she didn’t know that Harriet is a threat until Dale tells her so, and then she fears her and never questions Dale’s hunch? I just wish she would have thought for herself once in awhile.

Overall, I couldn’t get invested in this book and couldn’t connect with either Rennie or Dale, and found the book to really be lacking compared to the other installments in the series.

Sweet romance

I have two books by this author sat on my kindle as they were recommended to me and for some reason I just haven't got around to reading them. Well when I saw this short story advertised I thought it would be a good way to quickly get a feel for this popular authors style and I'm so glad I got it! Ms Grant has a way of pulling the reader into her story and although this is a short novella it didn't lack in either storyline or passion.
This is part of her Dark Warriors series and catches up with Dale a Warrior who previously had been coerced into helping the uber evil Jason. Dale had sacrificed himself so that Aisley could escape from her wicked cousin ( her happy ending is told in Warriors Temptation) and has found himself running and hiding since. Believing that there will be no redemption for his past wrong doings he is nevertheless drawn towards a young Druid woman Rennie whose magic calls to him. Rennie has spent her life plagued by the ability to give visions to others when she touches them and views it as a curse.
Attracted to each other from the start it's impossible for them to ignore their feelings but when Dake starts having visions when touching Rennie it's clear that time could be running out. Danger is closing in and it looks like Dale will face losing so much more than just his life this time!
Set around Christmas time this is a sweet romance with a surprising amount of story packed in. This may be short but it's not lacking! Obviously it would be better to read these books in order but I still felt that although a quick read it was a fulfilling one. The couple have instant chemistry but in a novella the author really can't afford to mess around. Romance, mystery, suspense and seasonal cheer.
Short stories are always hard to rate as I naturally want a longer read but this was a great little book and I'm off to read more of her work.

Joshua L. Chamberlain of Maine and John B. Gordon of Georgia led the Union and Confederate armies, respectively, at the formal surrender ceremony at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, on April 12, 1865. In one of the most dramatic and memorable moments of the Civil War, as the Confederate soldiers marched through the Union lines to stack their weapons and flags, Chamberlain, moved by the historic moment and desiring to pay honor to a valiant, defeated foe, ordered his Union soldiers to salute Gordon's Confederates. Gordon, surprised but stirred by the same emotion, immediately responded, and ordered his men to return the salute.
Both men had volunteered for military service, feeling a strong need to fight for their respective causes. They entered military service as low level officers with no formal military training. Repeatedly, they exhibited exceptional aptitude and responsibility, rising through the ranks as they received the glowing accolades of their superiors. Yet, they remained humble, continually demonstrating extraordinary courage, which earned them the respect of their men. Ultimately, their heroism and leadership culminated in their meeting as the commanders at the Appomattox Courthouse surrender. After the war, Chamberlain and Gordon entered politics in their respective states.

Excellently and timely theme

Nothing in the field of American History could be more timely than the lesson of respectful, civil discourse between two sides of a conflict. The additional theme of individual similarity, even in the midst of representing two different sides of a conflict, should give our current political leaders pause for thought. This should be required reading for undergraduates in Leadership Studies and our current elected officials.

Well written and great insights

Parallel backstories of two of the most famous generals in the Civil War. Their lives and miltary careers intersect at Appomattox and because of their outstanding characters,soldiers on both sides leave the field of war proud with some hope to look forward. Very well written storytelling in context. One of the better condensed description of the major battles involving the Armies of the Potomac and Northern Virginia.

Tools for Surviving in the Telecommunications Revolution

Making Connections is required reading for anyone seeking a clearer understanding of the old and new "mediated environments" in which human culture has been nurtured. It will be useful in courses in the social sciences, communications, history, anthropology, and marketing, and for the general reader who wants tools for cutting through the technological confusion which surrounds us.
Making Connections, as the title implies, is about the impact of communications systems on human history. But, on another level, this book is about helping the reader to "connect the dots," to form an image of what appears to the layman and expert alike to be an unfathomable telecommunications landscape.
Most of us can agree on one point: the pace of technological change, especially the convergence of media upon which we rely for indirect images of reality, is so fast that even professional viewers of that landscape have a difficult time describing what they see, no less what they think is on the horizon.
Through illustration, Meadow makes the case that evolving communications systems generate structure and this structure becomes the milieu, the growth medium, if you will, in which society and the individuals who populate it grow.
Meadow's lucid descriptions of complex information theory bring to the layman and professional reader alike, a new level of explanation that is both witty and wise, in which such concepts as the relationship between information and uncertainty, for example, become not only understandable, but available for application to everyday situations. Meadow's discussion of the complex interrelationship among symbols (data), information, and knowledge is professionally sound and very accessible to the layman. He also makes a valuable distinction between what we think of as "information overload," and the over abundance of potential information -- a distinction that addresses a rampant misconception about the true nature of information.
Meadow supports his discussions throughout the book with many verbal and visual illustrations. For example, in his discussion of language, he juxtaposes mathematical symbols and musical notation to show how these systems instantly bring to mind images of the reality they represent, no matter how abstract. Those trained to use these symbols, mathematicians and musicians in this case, can bring to bear their understanding of these symbolic systems and the rules of inference they imply, in order to get "meaning" from the text.
The book is chock full of very useful diagrams, charts, and historic photographs that illuminate the parallel evolution of human communication and the hard and, if you will, soft technology upon which it resets. The book also provides an excellent chronology of 100 dates to remember, around which teachers and students alike might easily build a semester or two of in-depth analysis.
Meadow 's distinguished career as an information scientist comes through in the authenticity of his writing. His modesty about his own contributions to this new science (he was one of the pioneers who worked on the development of ARPANet, the progenitor of the Internet) makes his writing all the more credible and valuable. As he notes, "One point some modern readers may find surprising is the role of government, and the military, in particular, in supporting both science and invention..." He should know first hand!
In his concluding section, he comments that, "The importance of technology comes from effect, not anything inherent in the technology." A simple, but pregnant statement, which directs us to appreciate the social and historic structure that communications (and transportation) technologies have, mostly with our full compliance, if not acceptance, imposed on human history. Meadow 's conclusions also address two major changes clearly in progress: the disencumbering of ourselves from wired communication and the convergence of media, facilitated by the central role of computer technology in new telecommunications systems. Cellular telephones, for example, are only possible because of computer technology.
Meadow also addresses the impact of the globalization of information infrastructure on the power of elites, especially in totalitarian regimes, which each day have less control over the flow of information within their societies. He warns us of some potentially dysfunctional effects of globalization, including the creation of demand in LDC's which cannot afford the mass consumerism rampantly on display in western media, and the real and present threat to indigenous cultures from the intrusion of global message systems into their mindscapes.
This book, however, is neither a utopian view of the past and future contributions of communications systems to society, nor a dystopian diatribe against the evils of new information technologies. Rather, it is a balanced, considered, witty, and wise view of who we are as communicators, how we got here, and where we might be headed.
Making Connections is a must read for all of us who want to be informed citizens capable of exercising our political franchise intelligently, not an easy task in an environment that is saturated with redundant mediated messages. Meadow suggests the map of the future be drawn on the canvas of our history that has grown out of our ability to extend our senses through communications technology.
Read this book if you, like the rest of us, need such a map.

Good book for the business reader

Making Connections is a book which business readers will find useful as they try to understand the role of new technologies in the work place. The scope of Charles Meadow's book is far-reaching, reviewing as it does the earliest origins of verbal communication to the impact of the latest developments in telecommunications and computing on society. The book is short on the hype so typical in business and marketing books, which tout the latest in converging technologies, and long on clarity and logical thinking. Meadow's Background Chapter sets out sufficient theory to make the rest of the book's content fit nicely into the technical environment about which it is written. It is very useful for its common sense and clever use of terms that the business reader can understand.
Charles Meadow writes compellingly about the impact of communications technologies on the form and evolution of personal, social, political and economic and business systems over the years. Of particular interest is his analysis of the impact of technology up to the mid-point of the 20th century, the juncture at which computers began to evolve and influence social systems. From this historical distance, Meadow teaches us to understand how the first electronic technologies changed society, thus giving us a handle on how new technologies affect us today. He offers one of the clearest definitions of "information" as he distinguishes it from the concepts of communication and knowledge The illustrations and pictures bring to the text a dimension of clarity not often seen in this kind of book. The reader whose specialty is not telecommunications will feel right at home with Meadow's approach to the subject matter.

A Short & Spicy Historical Romance

Juliana is a gentlewoman without funds or family who in order to support herself, decides to sell her virginity and become a courtesan. However, on the way to her first assignation her stage is pulled over by Guy, a handsome highwaymen who's not all he appears to be... I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this story. It's a short one and will take no more than an hour tops, but I thought it was well written, with likable and well-rounded characters. The romance moved fast but the passion and chemistry between this couple was believable. I thought the love scenes were smoking hot and strangely sweet at the same time. The plot moved along at a steady pace and had a few twists and turns along the way. I do wish there had been an epilogue, but all in all I thought it was an entertaining read and I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another book by this author. FYI, I did notice more than a handful of typos and could use some editing, but overall it wasn't too bad compared to some I've read.

My Review:

This novella was a quick read and in a good way. Ms. Kelly writes an intriguing story one laced with passion, theft, and misunderstandings. I enjoyed Juliana's independence in spite of her circumstances- without giving away too much of the plot- the twists and turns in the story kept me engaged and wanting more. As we learn about the mysterious highwayman, Juliana learns about herself and desires she never fully realized.

Inspiration!

I'd never heard of Sam Cawthorn before a newspaper article caught my eye and it prompted me to buy his book - what an incredible man! Sam displays a resilience I've rarely seen - I'm a Nurse of 25 years and his grit and determination is rare. I can only wish more Australians and beyond also find this book. Applying any of the ideas on "bounce" will have you succeed - just Sam's story was enough to help me through a very difficult time at work. I love to read inspiring true stories especially when the person is not well known -but this one stopped me in my tracks - I think Sam should be Prime Minister of our country!

One of the most inspiring authors

The idea of bouncing forward frightens me a little if only because it's unchartered territory. Author Sam Cawthorn is there to assist. He went through wretched pain and tragedy, recognized his predicament, and acted strongly in a way that helps others.

Cawthorn is more than inspiring. He sets forth principles for living, especially for when the going is toughest.

This Book Will Revive You

As you can see in other reviews this man was living a very 'nice' life when something happened: he fell asleep at the wheel and got into a terrible car accident. His right arm was torn off and his other injuries will make you cringe. This hits home because my sister was severely injured in a car crash and I find myself tired driving too/from work. He could have done what other people do: sit home, collect disability, watch TV, eat frozen meals and wait until his family got home. But he didn't. He chose to live. This book will inspire you to do the same.

The book is written in such as way that you can't help but think, "If this man can do all of this, why can't I do it too?? I may have some pain and issues but they're NOTHING compare to what Sam Cawthorn went through!"

I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels hopeless, depressed and discouraged. Heck, I suggest it to anyone!

Unique since this is the Vietnam War from a Korean soldiers perspective. The main character starts as a ground-pounder and finishes his tour as an black market investigator, very believable. Shows corruption throughout that period by all sides.

Korea's Platoon

This is a compelling account of the Vietnam War from an unknown point of view: that of one of the 100,000 South Koreans who fought in the war. The book's plot is slow moving and the prose somewhat stiff and overly cerebral (which may be the fault of the translation, which is not inspired). But the narrator makes keen and vivid observations of the war.

Hwang Sok-yong is among the most celebrated of Korean authors. He won the prestigious Daesan Prize in 2001 for his novel “The Guest”, an unflinching portrait of a North Korean massacre during the Korean War, and at one time or another has won most of the significant literary prizes this country has to offer. An outspoken critic of several Korean governments and a prominent dissident, he is also one of Korea’s most politically engaged writers. In 1964 he was jailed for labour activism. In 1989 he violated the National Security Law by travelling to North Korea where he met with Kim Il-sung. After this, Hwang spent several years in exile in New York and later Germany before returning to South Korea to face a seven year prison sentence.
Now in his mid-seventies, he continues to criticise the Korean government, recently attacking Park Geun-hye’s administration over its handling of the Sewol ferry incident. Throughout a long career Hwang has regularly mined his personal experiences and political beliefs for his fiction. Such is the case with the new English translation of “The Shadow of Arms” which draws on his experiences as one of the 300,000 Korean soldiers sent to fight alongside American troops in Vietnam. “The Shadow of Arms” is both an atypical war novel and an unconventional exploration of Korea’s involvement in the conflict. There is very little combat in this almost 600 page novel set entirely in a war zone. Instead the focus is on the black market dealings that occur in Da Nang as a result of the conflict – the thriving black market being the dark economic shadow cast by the war, and the intersecting lives of several Korean, American and Vietnamese characters who seek to profit from them.
The novel focuses on three key characters; Ahn Yong Kyu, a young Korean sergeant taken from the front lines to work with the Criminal Investigation Division and tasked with investigating backstreet dealings; Pham Minh, a young Vietnamese man who joins the National Liberation Front and fights against the American army; and Pham Quyen, Minh’s older brother and a commander in the Vietnamese army fighting alongside the Americans. The other main “character” is Da Nang itself, with Hwang bringing the sights, sounds and smells of the coastal city to vivid, evocative life. Hwang creates an intricate, richly detailed world of shady backstreet deals and dubious characters trying to exploit one another and reveals the cut throat economic consequences of war in a foreign land.
