I download these all the time and....

...this one was really great. It was well written, fun and steamy. And the early Roman setting made it feel like I watching that Spartacus series - only without the graphic gore. As I said, I read these all the time and some drag, some go too fast into the romance (which makes them unbelievable) some are predictable, and most are recycled stories, but this was different. Gilbert writes a good story. I've looked for more of her stuff (and couldn't find any) but is she does publish more, I'm in!

Wow, what a great, fast read. I work all-nighters and am constantly looking for things to read to keep me awake! This book did that plus some ;) ! It was well written and the story itself was easy to follow and get into! Greta! Please write more!!! I can't wait to read your next one! The story was hot and entertaining!!!!

This short story was too hot to put down! The description of old Rome was richly colored with names, building descriptions and costumes. The growing love between the lovely widow and her slave was hot and steamy! Good story line. I loved the book!

"It’s not rocket science: Alcohol puts more people in the hospital or graveyard than marijuana. If our laws are meant to prevent harm to others, then what harm are we trying to prevent by the illegalization of marijuana? In fact, making marijuana illegal absurdly inflates its value and encourages violent crime to command its distribution. The sources of marijuana’s illegalization are vile, rather easily traceable to bigoted attitudes toward Mexicans and African-Americans. Certainly, there are moments in this otherwise thoughtful and policy-driven initiative that veer perilously close to demonizing alcohol in the same manner that marijuana has been demonized. About the Author

Steve Fox, principal at Marijuana Strategies, is one of the leading figures in the movement to create a legal, regulated marijuana market in the United States. He is a cofounder of the National Cannabis Industry Association, which currently represents more than 250 state-legal businesses, and serves as a strategic advisor to the organization. While at the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) from 2002—2013, Steve lobbied Congress and guided numerous ballot-initiative campaigns, including the Amendment 64 campaign in Colorado, which made personal possession and cultivation of marijuana legal, while establishing a regulated market for adults. In 2005, Steve conceptualized and cofounded (with coauthor Mason Tvert) Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER) in Colorado for the express purpose of educating the public about the fact that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol. The goal, eventually realized, was to change the mindset of voters in order to make marijuana legal through a ballot initiative. He now serves as an independent consultant, advising individuals and organizations on marijuana policy- and industry-related issues.

Paul Armentano is the deputy director of NORML (The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and the NORML Foundation. A recognized national expert in marijuana policy, health, and pharmacology, he has spoken at dozens of national conferences and legal seminars and has testified before state legislatures and federal agencies. He appears regularly on Drew Pinsky's nationally syndicated radio show, Dr. Drew Live, and his work has appeared in over 500 publications. Armentano is the 2008 recipient of the Project Censored Real News Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism. He currently lives in California with his wife and son. This is a very interestingly written look at where we are and how we got here regarding marijuana. The title pretty much says it all but it is worth reading for new-to-me facts from research studies and the verbal ammunition for combating those myth-driven opinions from folks who parrot it back.

This book is amazing, it gives accurate and valid opinions and facts about pot. Before reading it i thought i knew the facts because I've used marijuana. I was wrong about almost everything. From dependency to cancer, i had it all wrong. this book is like a stoners bible. everyone should read it even if your against marijuana at least read the facts before making a decision on voting. Pot isn't for everyone and i understand that but dont jail people who use a safer recreational substitute for alcohol. The quote that realy stuck out to me was in the forward. The forward of this book is written by a guy named Norm Stamper, who is known for being the former Seattle chief of police. In that forward he writes, "I've frequently asked police officers throughout the U.S. (and Canada) two questions. First: " when's the last time you had to fight someone under the influence of marijuana?" My colleagues pause; they reflect their eyes widen as they realize that in their 5, 15 or even 30 years on the job they have never had to fight a marijuana user. I then ask, "when's the last time you had to fight a drunk?" They look at their watches. It's telling that the booze question is answered in terms of hours, not days or weeks." This has to be my favorite quote in the entire book. It really made me take a step back and think. So buy this book its woth every cent.

The modernization theories employed to analyze progress in the Global South years ago explained that improvements in living conditions and representative government become catalysts for accelerated expectations among the people affected. The net result and the interesting irony is that people become increasingly less satisfied with their lot even as modernization continues. Probably unintentionally, Stoll provides a case study of that phenomenon as it relates to U.S. schools. With little reference to the progress since, for example, Brown v. Board of Education, she is highly critical of 'the systemic and institutional nature of race and gender in our schools.' The crux of the matter and Stoll's thesis is that race-blind and gender-blind classrooms have actually produced racialized and genderized outcomes. The fault is primarily the use of traditional procedures, such as grouping students according to ability to simplify classroom activities, and the perpetuation of social privilege that educators and white students, particularly males, have historically enjoyed. My Review:
I really like this romantic suspense series from Shannon Curtis. Book #1 was Viper's Kiss (you can see my review of it HERE), but this book as the second book in the series, works perfectly well as a stand-alone book. On the surface, Jessica and Noah have nothing in common, but they actually are more alike than it would seem. Noah came from money/society and abandoned that world. Jessica did not come from money/society, but has learned to fit in there. They both are very protective of their place in the world because of the hurt they have suffered to get there. As a result, they are often times judging each other more harshly than warranted.

Jessica grew up on a farm where she was allowed total freedom. When her parents died suddenly, she was thrown into her Aunt's high society world where she was shunned because she didn't know how to behave. Obviously, that hurt...a lot, and she started her etiquette business as a way to help keep other people from suffering that same humiliation. Her entire goal in life is to make sure that people feel comfortable in any surrounding. In other words...she is an incredibly nice person who doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. To have a stalker who is threatening and vicious about their very personal attacks is a huge blow to Jessica's mental well-balance.

Noah grew up in polite society, but withdrew from that world when a woman and his father betrayed him. He didn't realize it at the time, but the woman was very shallow. She was all about her image and ways to improve it and he was incredibly hurt because of that. When he is assigned to Jessica, he immediately sees her as another society doll only out there to improve her own personal status. It takes a while for him to see past that pre-conceived notion about her. His attitude adjustment happened slowly over the course of the novel and I liked that gradual change.

This is an action packed novel with a lot of high suspense. I had some suspicions fairly early on about who the stalker was, but Shannon wound the story around very well so that it truly could have been anyone in a handful of suspects. There is another character in the story, Drew, who is another agent brought in to help Noah. I LOVED what his character added to the story especially in the few chapters where the story was being told from his point of view....so funny. I am really hoping we get his story soon. He's going to have a fun story when he falls because he is SUCH a player!

This was a great book and I look forward to more from this series!

Decent mystery, needs more hotness

Jessica Pennington spends her life instructing others in proper decorum. As an etiquette consultant, she prides herself on presenting a serene demeanor, allowing nothing to rattle her cage. Until Noah Samuels, that is. His boss enlists Noah as Jessica's bodyguard when she begins receiving ominous, nasty threats. Good thing Jess's body is one he likes guarding.

If you know what I mean.

But I'm ahead of myself. And I'm certainly ahead of Shannon Curtis, who keeps us waiting a LOOOONG time for some headboard rockin' in this book. And even then, it isn't the headboard that gets rocked.

Before Jessica and Noah engage in carnal adventures, they have to overcome the negative preconceived notions they have about each other. OF COURSE they have negative preconceived notions, because, COME ON, this is a Hot Romance Novels, and we all know that in Hot Romance Novels, the happy couple must work to be together. Jessica thinks Noah is a bit obtuse and lacking in social graces, while he thinks she's a snob. His nickname for her? Miss Prissy.

When Jessica lets down her guard, though, and confides in Noah just how upsetting this stalker business is, he softens toward her. Well, maybe internally he softens. Externally, he's all hardness.

If you know what I mean.

A brief excerpt:

Noah stared at her, his mouth open. He couldn't ignore the thread of hurt underlying her words, as though his remarks had cut her deeply. Her eyes were flashing and the color was high on her cheeks. Her chin was up, her shoulders back. She was defiant. She was scared, and she'd just undone him completely with her impassioned argument.

Put a fork in him, because he's done. And as an aside: Jessica squares her shoulders very, very frequently in this book. Very frequently.

Jessica, too, is attracted to her protector. He's built like a linebacker, and she, while petite, has legs that make Noah growl.

The thing is, though, Guarding Jess gets pretty dark and violent. While on the one hand, it's the story of a romance, on another level, it's about the twisted mind of a stalker. There is a body count in this book, and Shannon Curtis is unflinching in selecting her victims.

This book has a story that hooks you, characters who make you care, and some decent sexy times. I would have liked more of the latter, but that's just me. The mystery was well done, and it's a quick book to read, making it a good selection for the beach.

A safe story adequately told

As plots go, GUARDING JESS relies on the basic suspense factor. A woman - Jessica Pennington, in this case - is somewhat well-known and is the target of a stalker. The threats have gone beyond letters and phone calls; in the first few scenes, Jessica receives a package that contains a letter bomb. Luckily for her, she's just met Noah Samuels, her new bodyguard who manages to keep Jessica and her friends safe for the time being. There is an attraction between the two but one that seems will never happen, since Noah highly dislikes women like Jessica, who makes a living by teaching etiquette classes.

Shannon Curtis writes two main characters that are somewhat believable. Jessica is an independent woman who, while she understands the dangers happening around her, is determined to continue doing what needs to be done in her daily routine. Her tenacity causes issues with Noah, who just needs to keep her alive. Noah is a typical man's man and though he's not the best hero I've read in a novel recently, he's decent. He's protective - at first only as Jessica's bodyguard, but soon because he realizes he has feelings for her - but not in a cringe-worthy way. The splattering of secondary characters also works, especially Jessica's aunt who, like the others in this book, has two sides to her.

As for plot, there isn't anything spectacular. It reads like a typical stalker story with a love story emerging from the likeliest of characters. For me, the stalker seemed obvious from the second readers are introduced to the character, yet it is impossible for those in the story - including Noah and those helping him from his company - to figure it out. After a while, it begins to seem ludicrous that the mystery isn't solved yet, especially when the bodyguards are trained to notice specific details that they instead seemed to gloss over.

GUARDING JESS isn't the best book of its genre but it is good and won't take long to finish. It's one of those books that fans of romantic suspense can take by the pool or to the beach for some interesting words in the sun. Curtis writes well and I plan on checking out her next book, which I believe is rumored to be somewhat of a companion to this one, with its focus on another bodyguard from the company Noah works for. In a time when it's rare to be hooked enough to latch onto a second book in any sort of series, wanting to continue means it's good enough for me.

This is my 3rd edition

This is a clearly written, well organized reference. Many patients in my psychotherapy practice are multiple medications both psychotropic and otherwise. The book has all the basic information of the PDR without a lot of the chemical and biochemical information and it is easier to carry. Mosby's can almost always give me a clear description of a drug, its generic and brand names, applications, precautions, adverse effects, interactions, the appropriate dosage and available formulations along with the average cost at time of publication. The only down side is it becomes outdated quickly and you need a new edition about every two years.

The latest (4th) edition has been completely revised (45 new drugs!), and includes all the most commonly prescribed medications, with easy e-access to additional content, such as some pill images and chemotherapy, herbals and less commonly prescribed drugs. Easy to read and to find the information of interest. The formatting helps with ease of use. Very up to date. Recent important drug approvals included. Nice addition to any consumer or health professionals reference shelf!
