Very cute book

I bought this book for my husband for Father's Day. It is a very cute story and has a song at the end. So, if you play an instrument, the song goes with it too. I also bought "Daddy's Little Boy" (since I have a son and a daughter). Both books are very good.

I really loved this book, especially considering as a very young child my mother sang this to me over and over while my father was stationed overseas during the Korean conflict. The words are so dear and the pictures are beautiful.

Family Heirloom

I had no idea that they had made a children's book from the Mills Brothers' song! My husband and daughter sing this almost every night to each other. Needless to say, I bought this for my husband for Father's Day and it has become a very special item in our home. I wrote a note inside and dated it. I have no doubts that this book will become a family heirloom.

Deception among Mates

After reading Tempting the Enemy and being blown away, I was hoping and crossing fingers (and toes) that Ms. Tenorio would continue stories in this war-torn world she created. It just couldn't end there. It just couldn't! There HAD to be more. When I saw Deceiving the Protector pop-up on Amazon, I was very excited. But it had been quite a while since I read the first book, and I have read so many stories in between that I was concerned I would have forgotten important details. I remember being completely absorbed in the story and the strong emotions, but I was sure I had forgotten some important detail or two. But no matter, I didn't need to freshen up on the first story to jump into this one.

When the shifters are being murdered along the Shifter Underground (think the Underground Railroad) Alpha Pale Rysen sends his brother Jensen Tate to find and protect a missing stray and to shut down part of the Underground until the murderer is caught. Tate finds the stray, Lia Crawford, who doesn't really want his protection, his companionship, his incessant talking, nor anything to do with the Underground. Every time Tate turns his head, she disappears only to be found with new injuries. Lia has tried to keep her distance from all shifters knowing that anyone who crosses her path ends up dead. She knows the killer, and the killer wants to claim her. Even though Lia keeps everyone at a pole's length away, Tate has seemed to find a way under her skin. The more she lets her guard down, the more she has to admit that there is a connection between the two she has never experienced before. But if she's already been claimed by one male, how could she possibly WANT to bond with another? And what will happen to Tate if she allows him to stay near her where everyone dies?

I really loved Tate and Lia. Honestly, in the beginning I couldn't foresee how two such stubborn and very different people could fit together. Both are very closed off, yet as Tate realizes he must earn Lia's trust he unwittingly allows her to see behind the masks so she will open up and trust him. It happens so slowly and subtly that it's almost a done deal before you realize what has happened.

The mystery and suspense was cleverly done. Personal histories were given at the appropriate time. Magic was explained. The danger felt so real, even though this was a paranormal story. The biases and hatred between the factions were clear: they felt so real that I was sickened by it all. Although I loved how it ended, there is one thing in particular that felt a bit like "wave a wand" type of thing--you know, just use magic to fix everything.

Some warnings for the squeamish--first, this book has a few detailed sex scenes. If that's not your thing, you'll want to skip this one. Second, there is a lot of gore and violence. Third, characters use strong language.

There was a lot to love with this story. AND, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be yet another. The coming war is brewing. Those humans are stirring the pot. The shifters are uniting. The Sibile are burning bridges. There is still so much there, this can't be the end. Please, Ms. Tenorio?

Suspense & Romance...LOVED it!

My Review:
There are books that make me so happy that I am a book reviewer because I never would have found them otherwise. This is one of those books. This is book #2 in the Resurrection series. I have not read #1 (at the time of writing this review- by the time you read this, I can guarantee that has been remedied) but I got an offer of an ARC by the author, Dee Tenorio, so I jumped on it I am so glad that I did. This is another of those books that I can pretty much guarantee you is going to make my Top 10 list for 2011... such a good book!

Lia is a stray and Tate has come out to help protect her and to get her to safety because there is a serial killer that is targeting the Shifters in the area. What Tate doesn't realize is that Lia is well aware of the serial killer because he's her own personal stalker and murders anyone that shows her any kindness which means that Tate is next on his list of people to kill and chop up.

After years of torture and medical experimentation, Lia is trapped in her circumstances. She has lost all hope for herself, but contact with Tate has re-awakened that hope.

As with all shifters, Lia & Tate have an instant connection, but Lia knows that her connnection to him simply threatens his life further. Tate is unwilling to let her go especially as he realizes that she is being hurt and is absolutely terrified. He can't stand by while anyone is being hurt, but add in his attraction to Lia, and there is no way that she is going to get rid of him.

These are both extremely strong people, but Lia is... Wow, just incredible. Most people have died or gone insane after the treatments that she's had to endure, but she has never given in and never relented to the demands made of her regardless of the extra pain that meant she had to endure.

There were so many details to this story that made it really exceptional:
*the entire shifter world is really amazing. They are being hunted so Tate & his brother Pale (the alpha and hero from book #1, Tempting the Enemy) have set up a pack in California (Resurrection) as refuge.
*under high emotions, the wolf shifters' eyes change color to the wolfen golden yellow...very cool detail.
*Lia knows that she is never going to have a normal life, so she grabs whatever happiness she can with Tate. It's a heartbreaking desperation.
*BOTH of these people are willing to do ANYthing to save the other.
*a fabulous cash of characters: Pale & Jade (couple from book #1, Tempting the Enemy) and Betha (who is so freaking funny with her comments and observations.) These are Tate's family and they love him even when he's driving them insane.

The entire book simply throbs with emotion. There is so much desperation and futility to Lia's circumstances. What Tate is willing to give up to help her...*sob*...just so gorgeous. The entire books reeks of action & suspense, passion & love, heartache & desperation, and it is ALL so good!! From the moment that I started it, I simply could not put it down. Now I am off to read book #1, Tempting the Enemy. If it is even half as good as this book, then I am up for a long night of happy reading.

A madly enjoyable read with a good action to romance ratio

This is the second time this month that I've started a new series without having read the books that came before it. I hope I'm not developing a bad habit all of a sudden! Fortunately, I didn't feel lost while reading Deceiving the Protector; quite the contrary actually, I loved this book and am curious to know how this tale begins. I don't usually enjoy dystopia type scenarios but in this instance it works. The plotline of this novel offers an incredibly unique take on werewolves. There's also a lot of twists and turns that kept me guessing and made for a very gripping read.

I liked Tate and Lia's first meeting and the subsequent bond that formed between them. Lia is abrasive, secretive and one of the strongest willed characters that I've ever encountered. The crap that she's been through and survived is staggering. It'd be one thing if she was just being bombarded from one side but it's her very existence that's messed up. Lia's family was murdered, her sister was stolen from her, she was experimented on, forced into a mate bonding with a monster, and the list goes on! Running away isn't even an option because the bad guys can always find her. Talk about hopeless! I was rooting for the tables to turn for Lia through this entire book. This poor girl hit rock bottom a long time ago, it's about time for her luck to change!

Enter Tate, the ray of light in Lia's dark universe. He has no idea what he's getting himself into. At first it looks like a regular mission but as the story progresses he learns that there's a lot more to his "assignment" than meets the eye. Tate plays the role of a knight in shinning armor to a T. Stereotypical? Yes, but what girl doesn't love a good dose of masculine heroism every once in a while? Tate's also incredibly persistent and slowly manages to break through Lia's tough exterior. He's not forceful about it either; he uses his charm to weaken her defenses and his suavely manner is near impossible to resist. He starts by making her smile and goes from there. Aaww.

It's the storyline that truly did it for me in Deceiving the Protector. There's a palpable sense of fear that lingers in the air throughout this tale. You never know when the other shoe is about to drop. Lia's sad tale will have you rooting for something good to happen to her in no time. However, like most things, nothing is ever that easy. The pace of this novel won't leave you reeling but it does maintain a nice momentum that'll have you anxious to find out how it all ends. The wolfish life mate element also plays an important role in the development of this story. Dee Tenorio does a fantastic job of incorporating it by staying true to its foundations but without making things too predictable or mushy. I consider myself to be a pretty knowledgeable werewolf critic and I wasn't able to find any faults is the furrier aspects of this tale. Kudos for that!

The main characters from Tempting the Enemy do make appearances towards the end of this read but this book stands well enough on its own. Mind you, my curiosity is peaked after finishing this second installment and I feel the need to backtrack to the beginning of the Resurrection series. Deceiving the Protector is a madly enjoyable read with a good action to romance ratio; your heart will go from racing to jello many times over. Thanks for the great ride Dee Tenorio! I'll be making another trip into your Resurrection universe again sometime very soon.

To explore the meaning of Montana's century of statehood, 65-year-old Jick McCaskill, his photographer daughter Mariah, and her newspaper columnist ex-husband Riley Wright tour the Treasure State in Jick's Winnebago. While Riley writes on-the-scene dispatches and Mariah takes photos of the places they visit, Jick, the narrator, recounts the state's--and his family's--good and bad times. A lengthy picaresque with innumerable well-crafted vignettes, this leisurely novel could easily serve as a tour guide of Montana's historic places. As the miles go by, Riley and Mariah again fall in and out of love, and Jick, a widower, unexpectedly finds a new mate. The culminating volume in the McCaskill trilogy, which includes English Creek ( LJ 10/1/84) and Dancing at the Rascal Fair (Macmillan, 1987) , is highly recommended for its depiction of the past's impact on the present.

Utterly charming...read the whole series if you can!

As a young American Studies major, I read _English Creek_ , the second book about the McCaskill family, for a class about the American West. I was enchanted. Then I read the first, _Dancing at the Rascal Fair_ (the first in the series) which enchanted me again. Close to ten years after I read my first Doig book, _Ride with Me, Mariah Montana_ yet again entertained and beguiled me. Doig is a gift to us readers.
There is not a single dud in this series. Even if you don't like "western" novels (and I usually do not), these are great reads with excellant characters.

Wonderful Conclusion to the Story of the McCaskills

The two earlier books in this trilogy introduced me to the wonderful, fascinating McCaskills and to the rugged, hard and dangerous beauty of Montana. This final book brings closure to the family story and describes modern Montana. Ivan Doig brings the characters to life and makes you feel the country as a character in itself. This trilogy is highly readable and very enjoyable. It describes an important part of our American culture.

"Ride With Me, Mariah Montana" fits perfectly with "Dancing at the Rascal Fair" and "English Creek". The emphasis on well-developed characters and beautiful landscape descriptions continue to be foremeost. Beyond those, there is a story here, a complete story of a family. There are issues of grief, of loss, of love, and of reconciliation that are as real as day-to-day living. Fans of Wallace Stegner and Norman Maclean will find these works every bit as rewarding.

Even Grace Burrowes can whiff one

I've read every book that Grace Burrowes has published, and I thought her most recent (before this one) was her best yet. (That would be Once Upon a Tartan.) So I'm truly disappointed to say that Gabriel: Lord of Regrets is just an unmitigated mess. There is a convoluted backstory, a supposed murder plot, lots of sex, secrets. Oh, my God, secrets! Everybody is keeping secrets from everybody else. I note that several other reviewers have loved the book and given it a five-star rating, but I cannot.

Much of the backstory is found in Beckman: Lord of Sins. Gabriel North is the brooding, mysterious steward for the absent owner of Three Springs estate, where Sara Hunt is the housekeeper and Polly Hunt is the cook. Sara's young daughter Allie also lives there. Although Sara is the heroine of that book, there is a budding secondary romance between Polly and North. At the end of the book, North leaves his post, and Polly goes off to London to begin what promises to be a rewarding career as a portrait artist.

It turns out that Gabriel North is actually Gabriel Felicitos Baptiste Wendover, the presumed-dead Marquess of Hesketh. Two years earlier he had traveled to Spain to retrieve his brother Aaron, who had been wounded in the Peninsular War. While there, Gabriel was attacked by brigands and seriously wounded. Then, the convent hospital where he was recuperating was torched, and Gabriel allowed his family to believe that he had died in the fire. After their father died, Aaron took over the title, married Gabriel's fiancée, Lady Marjorie, and set about running the estate, clashing frequently with his steward, distant cousin George Wendover.

Three Springs is just twenty or so miles from Hesketh, so Gabriel was able to keep tabs on his brother, whom he suspected of trying to have him murdered. It suited Gabriel's purposes to live incognito, but eventually he became alarmed when he heard of Aaron's frequent duels, Lady Marjorie's extravagant spending, and mismanagement of the estate. At the opening of this book, Gabriel appears at Hesketh, but Aaron does not seem as shocked as the others. Is that perhaps because Aaron knew that the attempts on Gabriel's life had failed? Will those attempts continue now that Gabriel has surfaced?

SPOILERS AHEAD

[In a coincidence that happens only in fiction, Polly Hunt also is at Hesketh, having been hired to do portraits of Aaron and Lady Marjorie. Thus, Gabriel has the perfect opportunity to continue wooing Polly right under his own roof, but he worries that she could be harmed by whomever is trying to kill him. Polly loves Gabriel, but she resists his wooing, knowing she could never marry him because she has a Deep, Dark Secret from her past. Actually, Polly doesn't wholly resist, as she and Gabriel take to spending their nights in the same bed. I actually found the sex scenes here kind of squicky. As with most of Burrowes' books, the couple does not actually engage in intercourse at first; rather they go in for what used to be called "heavy petting." During these sessions, we learn that Polly is blessed with the ability to have orgasms at the slightest touch. Lots of them. Well, lucky Polly, but I would have been happy with much less detail about their couplings and near-couplings.

While Polly goes about her painting, she learns that Aaron and Lady Marjorie, who have been married for two years, have never consummated their marriage. In fact, they barely even speak. That's because theirs was a forced marriage. After Gabriel was declared dead, Lady Marjorie's mother, Lady Hartle, was determined that her daughter would be the marchioness and demanded that Aaron fulfill the marriage contract that existed between the parents. So Aaron grudgingly married Lady Marjorie. Now that Gabriel is alive and ready to claim the title back, Lady Hartle threatens to bring legal action to force an annulment so that Lady Marjorie can marry Gabriel. Neither Gabriel nor Lady Marjorie wants to do this, but as far as Lady Hartle is concerned her daughter will be the marchioness or she'll know the reason why. At this point, I was ready to throw the book out the window (figuratively, as I'm reading on a Kindle), for all this nonsense is addressed as A Serious Problem. Solicitors are consulted, which gives the author a chance to bring in the estimable Worth Ketterington, who has appeared in earlier books and who will apparently get his own story some day.

There is more - oh so much more - to come as this ridiculous tale winds on. Aaron and Lady Marjorie secretly desire one another, so Gabriel and Polly encourage them to act upon their passions. Polly is seriously considering a proposal from her sister's late husband's brother, Tremaine St. Michael. She's also suffering from missing her young niece Allie, who is really her daughter, fathered by sister Sara's no-good late husband Reynard. (That's the Deep Dark Secret, although we knew that from the previous book.) She also misses her sister, now happily married to Beckman Haddonfield and expecting an interesting event.

Ultimately, every single character in the book winds up drinking tea at Hesketh in the middle of a snowstorm and all is revealed. Oh, and the murder plot? Fuggitaboutit. Burrowes should avoid even attempting to write a mystery. With any other author, I would have quit half way through. But because the Lonely Lords series has been so good thus far, I kept reading.

My advice: skip this Lonely Lord and read Darius: Lord of Pleasures, the best of the series so far.

Gabriel ROCKS!

After years of hiding and denying himself his birthright, Gabriel Wendover leaves behind a woman he loves to resume his place as the Marquis of Hesketh even now still feeling as though he still had a target on his back after someone had nearly killed him some years back. He felt he could no longer hide and would bring himself out in the open, if only to discover who wanted him dead. However, after leaving behind the woman he loved (in order to protect her) he discovers she, Polonaise (Polly) Hunt has been hired by his brother to paint family portraits. Still fearing for her safety, Gabriel wants her gone, but his body simply wants her!

*** In Book #5 of my newest favorite and auto-buy author, Grace Burrowes has penned another marvelous book of GABRIEL, the mysterious land steward unearthed in her previous book BECKMAN - Book #4 of her Lonely Lords series. And let me say, right from the on-set - this series rocks! Additionally, to give you even more to ponder - Grace Burrowes is rocking skyward as a true super star of the historical romance genre!

Burrowes' characters are amazingly real. They aren't always your normal cookie cutter gorgeous vestal virgins, or the handsome rakish men of the ton with each story usually quite original, as well as totally believable. Especially in the instance of Polly, cook extraordinaire yet in reality an artist of immense talent and a bittersweet secret. Loving Mr. North who turned out to be the Marquis of Hesketh and knowing that with that revelation, Polly knew she would never be considered good enough for him.

Both Gabriel and Polly held bitter secrets that kept them apart, but the passion and sensualness of the authors writing as well as the mystery of where and who the danger came from was cleverly disguised and revealed in a way I never saw coming.

As mentioned before, Burrowes is a true star of this historical romance genre. She has graced us all with her exquisite prose, engrossing and creative stories, and I for one consider myself extremely lucky and blessed to have found her right from the start when I picked up a copy of THE HEIR!

Delightful...the brooding Gabriel revealed!

I was at sixes and sevens about this instalment of Lonely Lords. Whilst I enjoyed it I felt I did not actually love it as much as I wanted to. I couldn't put a finger on what it is that made it enjoyable rather than an mmm! thoroughly delectable experience.
Perhaps I expected more of the brooding Gabriel North. Perhaps I expected too much. Certainly he is warm and considerate of Polonaise on many levels. His internal reflections show his care and depth of feeling.
Perhaps it was the dithering and hiatus of Polonaise in her refusal to marry the delectable Gabriel that wore me down.
Allemande was ever fantastic with her child's clarity of insight and her focuses on all things to do with pigs and Gabriel. Her insights about various people's reactions and her feelings are hidden in her comments upon the animals. Indeed these moments were highlights.
The side story of Aaron and Marjorie were captivating. Kettering the lawyer has now become my newest 'interesting' character, as has Tremaine.
The descriptions of Polonaise sketching and creations capture beautifully the depth of talent our heroine has. So perhaps I can excuse her her hesitations on the grounds that her creative talent will always intrude upon her reality.
As I reworked my musings and struggled to say what I thought I realized that this story truly does have an immense amount of interest and twisty episodes. I was completely captivated! I amend my earlier comments. Reading Gabriel is very much a delightful experience!

James Lough is the former director of the creative writing program at Savannah College of Art and Design, where he currently teaches full-time. He is the author of Sites of Insight, which won the Colorado Endowment of Humanities Award. He is also the winner of the Frank Waters Southwestern Writing Award for short fiction. He lives in Savannah, Georgia.

SURPRISINGLY FASCINATING READ!

The subject was not spellbinding to me until I actually began reading the text and then....
Author James Lough can write! The introduction alone contains one of the best epigrams I've read in years: "Money drives the Mercedes called Manhattan. Individuality and eccentricity takes the bus."
From there, the book takes wing with some of the most extraordinary tales in modern memory. There are (far too) many books out there already on the subject of the Chelsea's heyday and sad demise. They don't come close to covering the ground and garnering the true sense of what it must have be like in its prime. You can practically smell it on the pages! Buy This Ain't No Holiday Inn. You won't be disappointed.

A Gritty, Grotesque, Vanished World

I met author James Lough on the rooftop garden of the old San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, introduced by a mutual friend. Perhaps he knew of my interest in the 80s (about which I have often written) for he told me that he'd be soon publishing a book on the Chelsea Hotel during that period. Not exactly the glory days for the hotel, but I told him I'd look out for his book and now that it is under my belt, I'd like to recommend it to those of my readers who can look a gritty subject in its face and not shrink away, for This Ain't No Holiday Inn is Bold with a capital B. Quickly Lough sketches the bygone days when Thomas Wolfe and O. Henry lived in the place, when Sarah Bernhardt built her own exotic pyramid in her apartment with which to restore her energies. The sixties (Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Nico, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen, Joplin) made the hotel a synonym for raffish sleaze, but by the time Sid killed Nancy it was all downhill.

Lough has assembled a team of talkative Chelsea habitues, I think all but one or two former residents of the hotel, to spill their most intimate stories. I hadn't heard of any of the witnesses, so in terms of star power this is no EDIE or REDS, but each has his or her own charm and the stories that come tumbling out of them are like some lost Pasolini film like Mamma Roma or whatever, the drive, the lust for life, the passion for drugs, the rebellion and the ennui. These witnesses describe the last days of beat legends Huncke and Corso; the birth of the love affair between Viva Superstar and William Eggleston; the conflicted post-Ramones musical career of Dee Dee Ramone, and the mess that was Jaco Pastorius, in his twenties one of the most talented bassists of jazz, in his thirties a corpse self-medicated to death. Dee Dee Ramone is quoted as having said, "All you need for a good punk rock song is three chords and a grudge." Most of the action takes place on the hotel's second and third floors, where most of the lowlifes were housed, and we hear very little of the upper floors of the hotel, where wealthy aristocrats passed their days on oysters and ormolu furniture, little guessing about the human misery groveling below their parquet floors. Yes, five or six stories below men and women were turning tricks for one hit of crack cocaine, and that was on a good day! Last Exit to Brooklyn move over, This Ain't No Holiday Inn is the new benchmark in squalor and broken minds. I take 1980-1995 as the era during which AIDS ravaged New York City and the world, and the Chelsea, of course, was not spared. Some affecting AIDS stories give the book its depth, its compassion, its courage.

Lough can write (his analysis of Eggleston's photos is astute and provocative) and he seems to enjoy the perfect confidence of these blind creatures of the night. (One was his brother-in-law.) Witnesses describe the painter and poet Rene Ricard as autocratic and sometimes withering (he appears in a sub-chapter titled, "Scary Poet Rene Ricard") but is given his proper due as a Leonardo-like Renaissance man--one guy tells Lough that "if you're an intellectual, Rene Ricard is a blast. It's like sitting with someone like Shelley or Milton." And he refers not to Shelley Winters or Milton Berle; he means to place Ricard in the very Pantheon of human genius, so yeah!

It is too bad they couldn't afford a proofreader down there, so that Virgil Thomson's name appears as Thomson some of the time, as "Thompson" the rest of the time--Thomson and Thompson, like the twin detectives in the Tintin books. Is Peter Brook alive? After hearing himself referred to as "Brooks" he may not make it to 89. Nevertheless anybody who's ever had a cockroach crawl over their shoe will warm to this book as I did. It's got vitality.

Interesting, insightful and very entertaining read

I know very little about the Chelsea Hotel in New York City, so "This Ain't No Holiday Inn" was a fascinating and insightful read. James Lough uses a creative approach to tell the history of the "glory years" of the hotel by using the direct quotes of some of the hotels former-residents. Their stories are linked together in a conversational approach--I felt like I was sitting in the hotel listening to their conversations. The descriptions are vivid and the tales are clever and interesting.
Lough doesn't regurgitate facts like a history book--he tells a story in a humorous and engaging style that makes the book move forward quickly without getting bogged down in tedious side stories or unrelated, hyped-up facts.
He's also quick to show that there was never just "one story" to be told. All the residents interviewed for the book offer their own quirky takes on their fellow residents and "what really happened."
With stories about Jimi Hendrix, Dee Dee Ramone, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, the beat writers, punk musicians, artists, poets, actors and other colorful characters we never knew existed, "This Ain't No Holiday Inn" is a treasure of unusual and colorful stories about a hotel that used to be flocked in bohemian culture.
The book is a rare glimpse at an institution that no longer exists--an institution that rarely speaks. Lough looks into popular tales like Sid and Nancy, but he also uncovers rare stories about Jimi Hendrix, beat writer Herbert Hunke, former Warhol actress Viva and the hotel's other mysterious guests and staff. If you want to read something about the iconic Chelsea Hotel that you have never read before, then this is the book for you.
