Review

A robot is an uncertainty machine: its perception and decision-making capabilities must embed at their core the processes dealing with uncertainty. The book is an essential reference for the student, the teacher, and the researcher to understand the basics and the advanced methods of estimation theory, and the probabilistic models and processes underlying robot localization, SLAM, and decion making. A 'muust have' textbook!

Superb
By Ravi Mohan
The authors took 6 years to write this book. And it shows. This is a mindblowing tour through the algorithms used at the cutting edge of Robotics.

What is good

1. Every algorithm has descriptive text, mathematical derivations AND pseudo code. More importantly it all meshes into a cohesive whole.

2. The progression of chapters is excellent, starting with basic algorithms and proceeding to more advanced/refined algorithms.

3.There is a consistent practical focus with algorithms being explained in the context of solving real world problems in robotics.

4. The exercises are few in number , but are *perfect* to illuminate each chapter's ideas and encourage the reader to start thinking on his own.

5. There is a comprehensive errata page on the book's website.

6. Last but not least, the tone of the writing is very engaging. The reader is not talked down to. It is almost as if the authors were in your study carefully guiding you through an intellectual wonderland.

The bad.

Hmmm i can't think of anything. It is great book. I just wish the authors would write MORE books like this :-)

About the only caveat is that a reader should have *some* degree of mathematical insight before attempting this book. The authors do cover elementary probability theory etc in the initial chapters, and they do a good job given the space constraints. But in my opinion if you have absolutely no experience in probability theory or calculus, you should probably learn from other books and then tackle this one. This is, after all, a graduate level text.

Delivers even more than it promises
By Joshua Davies
This is really an amazing book - it more than fulfilled my expectations.
It starts from the very basics of probability theory and clearly derives
Kalman Filtering, Particle Filtering, Probabilistic Motion and Probabilistic
Perception in the first 6 chapters. From there it moves on to talk about
Localization and Mapping completely separately (which I appreciated, since
the two topics are far easier to comprehend independently) in chapters 7 and
8 and then finally introduces SLAM (the main topic of the book) in chapter
9. From there it goes on to discuss various SLAM algorithms and implementations,
and finally rounds out with planning and control (that is, the practical
application of SLAM algorithms).

I can't imagine a more well-researched academic work. Every point is backed
up with examples and illustrations, and every algorithm is derived rigorously.
Even better, the mathematical derivations are set apart from the main text
so that a more "casual" reader can skip over the derivations and still get
some benefit from the text (and believe me, the math parts of this book are
very involved!). The authors assume a working knowledge of trigonometry,
calculus and linear algebra (although you could likely make some sense of the
book even if you're rusty in any of these areas). However, since the book
is about probability, you'll probably need some background in probability
theory to get any value from this text. Chapter 2 contains a refresher on
probability theory, but I doubt it would be enough to decipher the later
chapters if you had no background in the subject. I found myself having to
go back and look up the details of Bayes Rule and multivariate conditional
probability more than once.

My only gripe with this book is that each chapter includes suggested exercises
(good) but no answers/cross-check (bad). Especially considering the open-ended
nature of the exercises, it's almost not worth attempting them (or even reading
them), since you'll never know if you got the right answer, or were even on the
right track. There's no "student supplement" (at least not as I write this),
so the exercises are fairly pointless.

However, that aside, this is one of the best academic books I've read in a very
long time. I had been struggling through academic papers from IEEE and ACM on
the topic of SLAM, and only comprehending about half of it before I picked up
"Probabilistic Robotics". After reading this book carefully (I actually had
to read it twice to get it all to sink in), I'm actually zipping through the
academic papers, and understanding everything I read. You couldn't ask for a
better introduction to probabilistic robotics and SLAM.

Learn the material elsewhere, and then read this book
By DM
Think of a situation where you had an extremely good lecturer for some subject at uni. The lecturer explained everything very nicely using a host of slides, examples etc. Now, if after the lectures you go back and look at the slides again, you'll probably understand what the slides mean and remember what the lecturer said with regard to each slide. But, as is typical in any course, the slides doesn't contain all the information you learnt during the course. The explanations from the lecturer were critical in understanding the slides.

Now, think of the situation where someone who didn't attend the course, try to learn the subject, just by reading through the slides. This is generally extremely difficult. especially because the slides themselves doesn't contain all the information required to comprehend them.

This book is exactly that. It's a set of slides from a good lecture, but without the important other bits of information required to properly comprehend the ideas presented with it. I feel that the authors assume that the readers already know what they are talking about, and goes on skipping over the details required to properly grasp those concepts. If you've already learnt the topics in the book from by some other means, then you'll be able to understand what the authors are trying to say, and would end up ranking this book as an excellent book. But, my question is, if you already knew those things, why would you read this book in the first place.

BUT, it's not a worthless book. Few of the sections are explained in a very intuitive manner. Also, it's a good book for those who already know the concepts, but want to put them altogether in a coherent manner, with respect to robotics. Also, it is a good source for those who are looking for a list of state-of-the-art algorithms in mobile robotics.

From the Publisher
Emphasizing the algorithms and modeling issues involved with network location problems, it introduces a number of the classical facility location models on which other more complex and realistic models are based. Describes key methodologies used to solve facility location problems including linear programming, selected graph theoretic algorithms, Lagrangian relaxation, branch and bound, heuristic algorithms and Bender's decomposition. These methods teach readers how the basic approach works, when it is useful, what information it provides and how good the results are likely to be when the approach is applied. The accompanying disk contains coded algorithms for problem solving.

From the Inside Flap
From the fast food franchise down the street to a regional landfill a hundred miles away, from a community hospital around the corner to automobile assembly plants across the country, better facility locations can assist individuals and organizations in achieving their goals and realizing their objectives. Facility location models allow analysts and decision makers to explore trade-offs between different objectives, to analyze the impacts of constraints on facility siting decisions, and to consider alternative options. offers a practice-oriented introduction to the art and science of mathematical facility location modeling. By focusing on model development, solution algorithms, and practical applications, the text gives readers an intuitive knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of different modeling techniques. The book features software that solves many of the traditional facility location models using a variety of algorithms, thereby allowing readers to gain hands-on experience in the use of different models and algorithms using realistically sized data sets. End-of-chapter exercises review fundamental concepts and algorithms, enhance model-building skills, and link theory to practice through the use of the software. Beginning with fundamentals, the text outlines a number of different facility location contexts. It then develops a taxonomy of facility location models allowing the reader to focus quickly on the key areas covered by the book. It reviews special linear programming problems that arise frequently in location modeling including: the transportation problem, which is frequently used to allocate demands to facilities once locations are known, and the shortest path problem, used to estimate distances between demand areas and candidate facility sites. The book discusses four classical location problems extensively: covering models, center problems, median models, and fixed charge location problems. For each, the text outlines key model properties and outlines important applications of the models. In discussing solution algorithms for the models, the book presents a variety of heuristic and optimization-based procedures, including greedy algorithms, local improvement algorithms, branch and bound, Lagrangian relaxation, and dual ascent algorithms. Numerical examples for each algorithm allow the reader to follow the procedures step-by-step and to consider how the approaches might be adapted to more complex model formulations. Building on these basic models, the book then considers additional, real-life applications that naturally extend from them. It analyzes interactions between facilities as well as production and distribution models. The book presents several joint location-routing models. It formulates a number of different models of hub and spoke systems such as those commonly used by airlines, as well as models for the location of undesirable facilities including landfills, hazardous waste repositories, and nuclear power plants. The text also discusses multiobjective modeling techniques that allow planners to explore trade-offs between different objectives and siting plans. This comprehensive introduction to discrete location modeling, coupled with the bundled software, allows professional planners to exploit the full range of mathematical facility location modeling techniques. Also an ideal introductory text for students interested in mastering the theoretical and practical aspects of facility location planning, is a must for practitioners and students alike. is Chairman-elect of the Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences Department at Northwestern University. From the Back Cover
The comprehensive introduction to the art and science of locating facilities to make your organization more efficient, effective, and profitable. For the professional siting facilities, the task of translating organizational goals and objectives into concrete facilities requires a working familiarity with the theoretical and practical fundamentals of facility location planning and modeling. The first hands-on guide to using and developing facility location models, Network and Discrete Location offers a practiceoriented introduction to model-building methods and solution algorithms, complete with software to solve classical problems of realistic size and end-of-chapter exercises to enhance the reader’s understanding. The text introduces the reader to the key classical location problems (covering, center, median, and fixed charge) which form the nucleus of facility location modeling. It also discusses real-life extensions of the basic models used in locating: production and distribution facilities, interacting services and facilities, and undesirable facilities. The book outlines a host of methodological tools for solving location models and provides insights into when each approach is useful and what information it provides. Designed to give readers a working familiarity with the basic facility location model types as well as an intuitive knowledge of the uses and limits of modeling techniques, Network and Discrete Location brings students and professionals alike swiftly from basic theory to technical fluency.

Comprehensive math model of location and network
By Sarawoot Chittratanawat
This is the 2nd best book after Ahuja et.al. book (Network Flows : Theory, Algorithms, and Applications, 1993). As I said, it's the 2nd best book -so don't be surprised if you found Ahuja's book more useful. However, Daskin did good job to compile both location and network analysis in a single text book. We can see many issues in these areas in this book. I'd love to see more integration both math model and algorithm in this book though. If you don't have Ahuja's book, you may wanna grasp one (it's out-of-stock) before getting this book. However, if you are new to do research in location and network, grasp Daskin's book. You won't be disappointed with this book!

Breakneck paced romance
By Marlene @ Reading Reality
I kind of liked The Canvas Thief by P. Kirby...once I totally threw my disbelief out the window and treated the world of the book as if it were a cartoon world, which is just the way the main character, Maya Stephenson, created the hero and the villain. The underpinnings of the whole NeoVerse/EverVerse thing never gelled for me, but the breakneck pace of the story mostly carried me along, like Wile E. Coyote over the cliff, as long as I kept reading (running) and didn't look down.

Maya Stephenson is an artist, with a gift. All artists have a gift, but Maya's is special. She sees demons. That might be a little too special for most of us.

Maya knows that the world we live in has a few folks in it who are a bit odder than we think. However, Maya promised her mother that she would suppress her vision, and act normal. Because her Uncle Andrew could see the way Maya can, and Uncle Andrew wasn't just "taken away", but his family was made to forget him. The taking away part would have meant he was crazy, but the making people forget, that's powerful stuff.

So Maya began channeling all her visions into her art. Except Maya didn't draw what she saw. She was trying way, way too hard to be normal. Maya drew people. Since she was a teenage girl trying very hard to be normal, she drew boys. And she made up a story about them. A cops and robbers story. Adam Sayre was the cop, and Benjamin Black was the robber, the extra-talented thief.

Maya was so talented, and she concentrated so hard on making those drawings of Adam and Benjamin so perfect, that eventually Benjamin and Adam manifested from the NeoVerse to the Real. And because Maya's magic created them in endless pursuit of one another, they remained tied to one another. For ten years, as Maya changed from girl to woman. And her fantasy men learned the ropes of the real world.

Benjamin Black lived and loved and lost. And decided he wanted to Fade from the Real to EverVerse, so that he might never lose anyone again. Adam Sayre learned to manipulate the system that, as a cop, he was supposed to be a protector of. Adam decided he wanted to stay in the Real forever.

Both Benjamin's and Adam's decisions required something from Maya to fulfill. Their 'key drawings'. That first, perfect drawing that made them 'real'. Benjamin tries to steal it, and Adam tries to manipulate Maya into it. Neither succeeds. Any woman strong enough to create life from the NeoVerse too strong for that.

But the collision course of their three lives changes everything. Maya discovers that the rules of 'normalcy' she has lived by are so, so unreal. Benjamin learns that being hurt once does not make him immune from being hurt again.

Escape Rating C: The story catches you up and keeps you in its grip, which is a really good thing, because the worldbuilding doesn't quite hold up. I couldn't make sense of the whole NeoVerse/EverVerse concept, and I decided to just go along for the ride. Unlike Wile E. Coyote, I chose not to look down after I ran off the edge of the cliff.

There's a famous quote from Margery Williams' The Velveteen Rabbit, or How Toys Become Real where the Rabbit asks "What is REAL?" and that kept coming back to me when I read this book. Maya never intended to make her characters real; she had no idea she had that power. When love enters the picture, as it does in The Velveteen Rabbit, the question of whether love is enough to make the man she loves 'real' enough to remain in the so-called real world becomes one of the big questions of the story.

Only OK as an action/suspense cop story with a lot of steamy sex.
By Jane
Story Brief:
Remy lived in foster homes and on the streets in the year 2082 in Washington D.C. Kirsten is a vicious cop who has personal issues with Remy, killed Remy's friends and wants to kill Remy. Remy steals some antique coins, one of which transports her back in time to the year 2008 in Los Angeles. Kirsten has a second coin which allows her to transport to the same place and time as Remy. Kirsten now hunts for Remy in 2008 LA.

Meanwhile, Nathan, a former cop, is a bounty hunter in 2008 L.A. He is after Tian. Tian and his thugs want to kill Nathan. When Remy is transported to LA, she arrives in the warehouse Nathan is in at the time. She and Nathan immediately fall in lust with each other. The rest of the story is about good guys chasing bad guys and vice versa. Someone gets kidnapped and tortured, and later gets saved.

Reviewer's Opinion:
The outline of the story, the characters and the plot sound pretty good, but the conversations and writing style had no spark. I wasn't surprised or delighted. It reminded me of the made-for-tv cop shows, all being churned out weekly and similar to each other. It had good fundamentals, but it was too predictable. Maybe the characters could have used a little more personality quirk or style. For those interested, there were a lot of hot and steamy sex scenes.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
I never did fully understand how the magic coins worked. The legend was vague. Nathan burned his hand touching one, but Remy and Kirsten did not burn their hands. I didn't understand why Gabriel shot the people he did at the end. I'm curious as to how Gabriel learned about the coins, and wondered if he had Kirsten's coin. I was also confused about why Gabriel just let certain people walk away at the end without killing them. I don't have to have everything explained for me to enjoy a good story, but I thought I'd mention these confusions.

Story length: 274 pages. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 7. Length of sex scenes: 1 short scene (1 page) and 6 long scenes (from 3 to 10 pages). Setting: 2082 Washington D.C. and 2008 Los Angeles. Copyright: 2007. Genre: romantic action, suspense and time travel.

could not finish- all sex, no plot
By moria2
I found this book in the Sci-fi section and not the romance section, and it looked like an interesting premise: a person traveling to 2008 from 80 years in the future, bounty hunter, and mystery coin-OK. The first couple of chapters are fine- interesting even, but after that it starts going into far too much sex (think rabbits) and far too little story. I lost interest and started skimming around page 100 and just gave up around page 237. For me, the plot was lost in all of the sex, and I was unable to become interested in the characters.

Needed more story between the sex scenes
By Marlene @ Reading Reality
Chasing Silver by Jamie Craig is a time travel romance of the very hot and steamy variety. I really liked the gutsy heroine who, as she says, "doesn't do damsel", and the hero who hasn't let himself feel anything in way too long. The device that started the whole time-travelling jaunt in the first place, well, let's hope there's more explanation for that in book two (or three) of the Silver Maiden trilogy.

The year is 2085. Remy Capra is running for her life from Kirsten Henryk, Senator Henryk's daughter and paranoid enforcer. Kirsten does have something to enforce in Remy's case. Remy is a gang member and small-time thief, and Remy has just stolen something important from the Senator's house in DC: one of the coins known as a Silver Maiden. In what Remy was sure were the last seconds of her life, Remy clutched the coin as wished for safety.

The year is 2010. Nathan Pierce, ex-cop and bounty hunter, is in a warehouse in Culver City, chasing down a bounty jumper known as Tian. He almost has him, when a severely injured woman falls out of the sky, raining blood, glass and small explosions. His bounty escapes, and Nate is left with Remy Capra bleeding all over him, trying to pretend she isn't so wounded she can barely stand.

Neither of them wants to go to the cops. Nate's lost his bounty. Again. Remy has no ID in 2010. She won't even be born for 50 more years. And she doesn't know yet whether Kirsten is still after her or whether she has a chance to make a fresh start. Neither of them starts out willing to trust the other, even a little bit. Nate was set up and betrayed by the last woman he trusted. Remy is a child of the gangs in the DC she comes from. And would anyone believe her story? But their attraction to each other proves stronger than their doubts and fears.

When Kirsten does follow Remy, using another Silver Maiden coin as passage back in time, Nate, Remy and Nate's partner Isaac must set aside all their misgivings about each other and their past, whenever that past might have been, in order to fight for a chance, any chance, at any future at all.

Escape Rating C: This story was either too long, or too short. On the one hand, we don't get enough about why Kirsten was so gung-ho to wipe Remy out. There was definitely some old, bad blood between those too, but we don't know enough. There was something personal on Kirsten's part. Remy was trying to survive.

I empathized with both Remy and Nate as characters. They had both been to dark places, and they understood that about each other. They had a chance to make each other better, but neither was made out of sweetness and light. And they wouldn't have worked together if they had been.

I'm very glad that one of the later books is Isaac's story. He deserves a happy ending of his own. And I really want to know what his deal is.

The reason I said the books might be too short is that the legend of the Silver Maiden coins, what they do, why they do it, how they work, who knows about them, is still unclear at the end of the book. Remy and Kirsten both made them work. The coin reacts to Nate. Gabriel, another baddie, knows about them. But the readers need more details!

On the other hand, the reason the books might be too long is that there are probably too many detailed sex scenes. I had to think about why I thought this. Romance is interesting, because it's a story. How did they meet? How long did they resist the attraction? What made them give in? Unresolved sexual tension is interesting because how and why they resist is a story. The first time a couple kisses or has sex or makes love in a romance is note-worthy. Possibly even the second time, since it should be different. In a story, the first time there are emotions involved and not just body parts is definitely note-worthy. Break-up and make-up sex, but because of the emotions, not the "tab a goes into slot b", no matter how you dress it up, or undress it.

The only romance writer who has been able to successfully write an unlimited number of sex scenes involving the same two partners is J.D. Robb. And only because she talks more about how Dallas and Roarke feel than about what they do.

The Neoconservatives: The Origins of a Movement: With a New Foreword, From Dissent to Political Power, by Peter Steinfels

In 1979, Peter Steinfels identified a new movement and predicted it would be the decade’s most enduring legacy to American politics. In a new Introduction he describes its evolution from a reaction to Sixties' social change into an entrenched political force promoting an assertive, even belligerent, foreign policy.

The Neoconservatives traced the origins and described the beliefs of a movement that had barely been labeled. Four decades later, the neoconservatives have become the “neocons,” advising presidential candidates, manning think tanks, churning out books, op-eds, TV interviews, and policy proposals. They played a key role in pushing the nation into the war in Iraq and continue to argue for an assertive American foreign policy, whether toward Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea, or China, that does not hesitate to act unilaterally with military power.

The Neoconservatives probes the roots of this movement as it describes its early days with portraits of Irving Kristol, Daniel P. Moynihan, Daniel Bell, Nathan Glazer, Samuel Huntington, and others. Peter Steinfels was the first critic to understand and gauge an emerging philosophy that would grow into an enduring force at the forefront of American foreign policy making. The Neoconservatives is an important contribution to our political history.

Bound for America: Three British Composers (Music in American Life), by Nicholas Temperley

Nicholas Temperley documents the lives, careers, and music of three British composers who emigrated from England in mid-career and became leaders in the musical life of Federal-era America. William Selby of London and Boston (1738-98), Rayner Taylor of London and Philadelphia (1745-1825), and George K. Jackson of London, New York, and Boston (1757-1822) were among the first trained professional composers to make their homes in America and to pioneer the building of an art-music tradition in the New World akin to the esteemed European "classical" music. Temperley compares their lives, careers, and compositional styles in the two countries and reflects on American musical nationalism and the changing emphasis in American musical historiography.
