Engaging mystery set in St. Andrews

Suspicion always haunts the guilty mind. - Shakespeare

St. Andrews is home of an ancient castle, ancient cathedral, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, and historic university. A university from which a royal romance blossomed between Prince William and Catherine Middleton. The same university that facilitates a murder mystery in SEA OF SUSPSICION. Even as the murder of a student unfolds, marine biologist Susie Cooper is attending a dinner party with colleagues where she meets Detective Inspector Nick Archer. She is surprised by her attraction to the rugged officer. Yet Susie has been on Nick's radar for some time - Nick believes Susie's boss is responsible for his wife's death (she left Nick for the boss). Fate brings Susie and Nick together again in the investigation, where both confront emotional trauma that plagues their present happiness.

Anderson delivers a chilling intrigue in an idyllic setting that also has a violent history. The violence continues to follow Nick as he attempts to right his past and forge a future with Susie. Romantic suspense is not my first choice of genres. Yet I enjoyed reading SEA OF SUSPICION - Anderson drew me with characters who added depth to Nick's quest for justice and Susie's desire for a family. Anderson created the perfect balance between murder mystery and romantic suspense to appeal to a broad range of readers.

Weird relationship vibe

Not a bad storyline as far as suspense and mystery, but the romance was strange. Everyone in this book seemed to have some sort of sexual hang-up, and Susie and Nick were just weird together. She was annoying on many levels, one of which was her constantly changing her mind about Nick. And he was just as bad. I thought he was sexy, but he was also a jerk, and I just could not get into their relationship. And the issues with Lily and the Portuguese guy were never explained to my satisfaction. Seemed to be an unnecessary distraction. I would probably only recommend this if it were free.

Great suspense - Will keep you guessing!

Set along the coast of Scotland, Sea of Suspicion is a riveting story of suspense and the depths and heights of human character.

Nick Archer is a driven man. A police detective, he has one thing on his mind - finding the proof he needs to get justice for his murdered wife. Despite the fact that over a decade has passed since her death, he is still relentless in his quest.

Dr. Susie Cooper also has ghosts in her past. Above all, however, she wants a family. She knows she's made mistakes, but she is determined not to repeat them. And that includes not falling for the wrong man, a category which most certainly includes Detective Inspector Archer.

Despite being all wrong for each other, Susie and Nick meet at a dinner party, and then are quickly thrown together when one of the students at the Gatty Marine Laboratory is murdered. Multiple suspects, all equally viable, kept me guessing right up until the end.

One of the strongest points of the book is the secondary characters. Some are morally weak, some are sympathetic, and then some are truly the best of humanity. Case in point is Nick's friend and co-worker, Ewan. Ewan's wife, Amy, is dying of multiple sclerosis. The love and tenderness he has for her is absolutely touching. I know that people the world over deal with tragedy like this every day, but that makes it no less noble.

The only weakness of the book is the actual relationship between Nick and Susie. If I had a friend in the same relationship, I'd chalk it up to good sex and infatuation. Sure, it might turn into love - but I just didn't see it happen in the book. The relationship seemed a bit rushed - I didn't get a real feel that Nick and Susie were connecting.

Sea of Suspicion was still a fun read and trying to figure out whodunit definitely kept me entertained. Based on this book, I'm certainly interested in reading further books by the author.

In a well-grounded study of one Midwestern city, Meg Wilkes Karraker pulls Catholic sisters into the limelight and convincingly documents their immense contributions to the common good. The sisters at the heart of her study are inspiring, pragmatic, and exemplars of Christianity-in-practice as they embrace the Gospel mandate to care for the stranger. Judd, the elder half of country music's superstar mother-daughter duo The Judds, spins the lyrics of their hit song into a sentimental picture book about the ripple effect of love and good deeds. Each verse/ stanza speaks of making sacrifices in the name of love ("I'd gladly walk across the desert with no shoes upon my feet./ To share with you the last bite/ of bread I had to eat"); meanwhile, Duranceau (Follow the Moon) depicts pairs of multiracial children performing various kindnesses for each other. A girl shares her sandwich with a boy; that boy helps another boy who has fallen on the playground; the second boy visits a friend in the hospital, and so on. The chain of events shown in Duranceau's creamy, lifelike portraits captures Judd's theme: "Love can build a bridge/ between your heart and mine,/ Love can build a bridge./ Don't you think it's time?" Confusingly, one spread appears to break the continuous link between the children to begin a new succession of kid-to-kid encounters. Judd's call for harmony, respect and responsibility is inarguably worthwhile. That said, Judd's foreword, in which she describes "hunkering down" with her dog to watch a homeless man sleeping on a bench (and never offering him help) is an uncomfortable fit with her text. An audiocassette recording of the song is included. All ages.

PreSchool-Grade 2A glossy, commercial production of a song by the popular country-music star. The message is clear and the illustrations suggest ways that a person might help someone else. In the full-color paintings, one child fixes the others bike wheel, another tends to a friends scraped elbow. The closing spread shows the children, hand in hand, standing together midair to form a bridge. The lyrics are repeated on the last page. The multiethnic, tirelessly cheerful, clean youngsters look stiff and posed. The hope for a peaceful world and love for all is an admirable one, but here its been packaged for sale, not interwoven within a real story. In this memoir Naomi, the mother of the popular mother-daughter country music duo The Judds, tells her life story. Ken Stilts, her long-time manager, describes Naomi's life as "part Greek tragedy, part soap opera," and he's at least half right. This account in no way approaches the literary quality of even the worst Greek tragedy, but the term soap opera is an apt one. While most autobiographical works are built upon events that are unique and significant, Judd's life story comes across as a rehash of every soap opera ever produced. Mired in unnecessary detail and an overabundance of cliches, this book will probably disappoint even the Judds' most ardent fans. Purchase only according to demand.

WITTY JUDD-ESQUE FICTION

In light of recent revelations about the misrepresentations and inaccuracies of specific facts and details in LOVE CAN BUILD A BRIDGE, all I can surmise about this work is that it is a great FICTIONAL STORY, based on a true story, but highly manipulated and manicured to put NAOMI JUDD in a flattering light. Creative, witty, and highly imaginative, Naomi Judd is no doubt a talented writer...of fiction. Take the content of this book with a grain of salt.

Drama Queens (AKA: The Judds)

Drama Queens!!! Wow!!! A fascinating story, but maybe more "story" than "truth", eh? In any case, a good read. Fast, compelling, and lively. A plot twist on every page. The television mini-series didn't live up to the book. Would have been better as a Big Screen Movie. Two thumbs up!!

Miss Naomi struck "the matter of the heart", as usual.

For many years I had the pleasure and the responsibility of teaching future teachers and librarians the genre of Literature for Children, pre-school-grade 3 and juvenile literature, both graduate and undergraduate courses. Based on that background, my adjudication of Miss Naomi's book is 5 star. First, the song itself is an established winner. The art work is the bold, graphic-type that children of that age group prefer. Studies have shown that to be so. The tape then presents Miss Wynonna and Miss Naomi doing what the world so loves. That, too, is a proven fact. Finally, the type font and size also meet the children's preferences. The studies have shown that as well. So, Miss Naomi has scored another winner. I bought it for my own grandchildren. Obviously, I like the book.

About the Author

Luís Ribeiro graduated in Mining Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) in Lisbon, Portugal in 1978 and completed his PhD in Mining Engineering (Hydrogeology) at IST-UTL in 1992. He is currently Associate Professor at IST, Director of the Geo-Systems Centre/CVRM, and President of the Portuguese Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH). He was also President of the Scientific Committee of XXXV IAH Congress “Groundwater and Ecosystems” held in Lisbon in 2007.

Tibor Y. Stigter completed his MSc in Geographical Hydrology in 1997 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands and his PhD in Engineering Sciences (Hydrogeology) in 2005 at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal. He has worked and taught classes at the Universidade do Algarve (UALG) in Faro, Portugal. He currently holds a Researcher position from IST, working on groundwater, contamination, climate change and sustainability. As a member of the Geo-Systems Centre/CVRM, he works both at IST and UALG, coordinating research projects and supervising MSc and PhD students.

M. Teresa Condesso de Melo graduated in Geology from the University of Coimbra, Portugal in 1992, completed her MSc in Groundwater Hydrology at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain in 1996 and her PhD in Geosciences (Hydrogeology) with a sandwich PhD project at the Hydrogeology Group of the British Geological Survey (BGS), Wallingford, UK and the University of Aveiro (UA), Aveiro, Portugal in 2002. In 2006 she became a Guest Professor of hydrogeology at the University of Aveiro, and she now holds a research position at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal.

Born in 1961 in Sardoal, Portugal, António Chambel obtained his PhD in Geology, specialising in Hydrogeology, at the University of Évora, Portugal, in 1999. He is currently teacher in the University of Évora and ERASMUS teacher in the Universities of Prague, Czech Republic, and Huelva, Spain, as well as researcher of the Geophysics Centre of Évora. He is Vice-President ofProgramme and Science Coordination for the International Association of Hydrogeologists and Technical Director of Hydrogeologists Without Borders. He specialises in groundwater prospecting, hydrogeology of hard rocks, relations between groundwater and ecosystems, hydrogeological mapping and aquifer contamination. He has also focussed on legislation and water and environmental management, including the river basin management plans for Portugal.

José Paulo Monteiro currently holds a position as Professor at the Universidade of the Algarve. He obtained his PhD in hydrogeology in 2001 at the Faculty of Sciences of the Université de Neuchâtel, Switzerland and his MSc in hydrogeology in 1993, at the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal. His main research topics are modelling and monitoring porous, fractured and karstic coastal aquifers, aquifer-ocean and river-aquifer interfaces; hydraulics of water wells; groundwater dependent ecosystems and integrated water resources management.

Albino Medeiros graduated in Applied Economic Geology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, Portugal in 1993 and completed his MSc in Engineering Geology, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa - UNL, Portugal in 1999. In 2005 he became a Guest Professor of Groundwater Modelling at the Earth Sciences Department of UNL. Currently he is a hydrogeologist at the Grandewater – Hidrogeologia Aplicada, Lda with development work in Portugal and Africa (Angola and Mozambique).

This is, in fact, one of the strengths of the collection; there is something here for everyone. ... On the whole, this collection is an excellent contribution to the ongoing free will debate. Those interested or engaged in that debate will find much to appreciate (or argue vociferously against), including those chapters that could not be fit into this review. Dose of reality

I found this book to be stimulating and mind-opening. I already had come to the conclusion that free will was limited in many ways, but this collection of essays gave me much more to consider. It's a mix of philosophy and neuroscience, with each author contributing arguments for some aspect of the debate. I especially enjoyed learning a variety of explanations for why we ought to be "good" (or might still behave morally) without having to believe in absolute free will. Mind-bending.

Worthless as a review and even more as a presentation of the subject

This book was a big disappointment for me. Chapter 1 is somewhat confusing and the author of Chapter 2 aims to present his/her arguments as a case in logics, but fails to discuss the basic premise, i.e. “what one does is a function of how one is.” For the sake of brevity I will not dwell further on this.

Chapter 3 is a great example of how one can utter a string of nonsensical statements, for lack of understanding of the subject at hand. Says the author, verbatim, “the interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, the application of that Mathematics to the world, has long been allowed to be logically a mess, and it would be called so more often except for excessive deference to physics and to science.” And he goes on with still more on the subject. Sure, we scientists must be some kind of demi-gods, that’s why the world allows us to present a “logical mess” without rebutting us. It is a shame that such display of ignorance be allowed to be published.

The author of chapter 4, quoting still another author, says, “our basic status as distinctively free and morally responsible agents should not depend on the arcane ruminations - and deliverances - of theoretical physicists and cosmologists” (arcane ruminations?) The same comments apply as I said about chapter 3. I am sure not all the other authors are so sadly unfamiliar with the science they try to use to corroborate their statements, but the above examples are enough that I cannot recommend the book for anyone, familiar with the subject or not. I do not believe it deserves anyone's confidence.

After that I read fragments and paragraphs from one or another chapter, but I did not find anything worthy or valuable or enlightening or novel, even considering this book appears to be kind of a review, with precious little originality.

Hamlet "is, without a doubt, the most famous play ever written; certainly the most quoted and certainly the most talked about which is amazing when you consider that there are no jokes in it." So says actor and caricaturist Francis, and for those who prefer their Shakespeare with a bit of humor, he obliges with this anthology of poems, musings and reminiscences that make light of the dark Dane. Peter O'Toole called it "the worst play ever written." The "duke" in Huckleberry Finn mangles Hamlet's soliloquy as he recites it from memory ("To be or not to be; that is the bare bodkin/That makes calamity of so long life"). And director Tony Richardson recalls his casting of Nicol Williamson as the prince in 1969-lauded at first, Williamson became a erratic after awhile: he "walked off or interrupted the show several times...to the titillation of audiences," and began overacting recklessly. This is a charming bit of fluff for Shakespeare enthusiasts.

About the Author
Clive Francis is well-known as an actor as well as a caricaturist. He has made over a hundred television appearances, while his London stage career began in 1966 with There's a Girl in My Soup. He performed in a large number of shows in London's West End, including Graham Greene's The Return of AJ Raffles, Somerset Maugham's The Circle, Simon Gray's The Rear Column, Sheridan's The School of Scandal, Noel Coward's Look after Lulu, Michael Frayn's Benefactors, Joe Orton's What the Butler Saw and Alan Bennett's Single Spies. He joined Alan Ayckbourn's company at London's National Theatre in 1986 and was Scrooge for two years running in the Royal Shakespeare Company's A Christmas Carol.

Clive Francis has been caricaturing professionally since 1983 and has had seven solo exhibitions including three at the National Theatre. He has designed a number of posters and book covers, including two for Alec Guinness and two for John Gielgud.

As well as the impressive art work, Clive Francis's theatrical experience is used to good advantage.
