From Publishers Weekly
In a collection boasting the wide range of writers and themes that has come to be expected of the O. Henry Awards, the biggest news might be the comeback of the New Yorker as magazine of the year. With only one story from the magazine making the cut last year, this time it boasts five of the winning selections and several more on the short list. This may reflect editor Larry Dark's wish that short stories reach a broader audience, and indeed many readers will be familiar with the New Yorker winners, ranging from selections by such well-known favorites as Alice Munro and Louise Erdrich to a story by newcomer David Schickler, whose surreal and wacky urban romance, "The Smoker," was released as part of a well-received collection this year. The first-prize story, "The Deep" by relative unknown Mary Swan, is a haunting historical piece about twins during WWI. Andrea Barrett makes an appearance with "Servants of the Map," about a cartographer working in the Himalayas in the 1860s. There are moody contemporary pieces by Fred G. Leebron, Elizabeth Graver and Ron Carlson; chilling, crime-oriented stories from William Gay, Dale Peck, T. Coraghessan Boyle and Joyce Carol Oates; and a wry, comic, three-girls-and-a-guy morality play from Antonya Nelson. Those favoring an alternative point of view can dip into George Saunders's "Pastoralia" or second-prize winner Dan Chaon's hilarious "Big Me," and Murad Kalam and Pinckney Benedict serve up two very different visions of the future. As always, there will be debate about who should or should not have been included, but judges Mary Gordon, Michael Chabon and Mona Simpson have proffered an engrossing collection proving that talent and imagination are alive and thriving in the American short story. From Library Journal
In his introduction to Prize Stories 2001, editor Dark notes an increase in the number of longer stories, or novellas, being published in literary journals. To reflect this trend, Dark chose to publish three longer pieces, bringing the total number of stories in this year's volume to 17 rather than the usual 20. One of these, Mary Swan's "The Deep," an absorbing account of twin sisters in the World War I era, was chosen as the best story of the year. Runners up were Dan Chaon's "Big Me" and Alice Munro's "Floating Bridge." Munro also receives a special citation for her continued notable work in the short story form. Dark writes that he was torn between Munro's above-mentioned story and her equally fine "Post and Beam;" happily, the latter appears in Best American Short Stories 2001. Kingsolver narrowed her selections by opting for only those that "tell me something I don't already know." So we get funny and intriguing views of other cultures, such as Ha Jin's "After Cowboy Chicken Came to Town," which is about the workers in an American fast-food restaurant in China; Katherine Shonk's "My Mother's Garden," set near post-disaster Chernobyl; and Trevanian's sly Basque fable, "The Apple Tree." Two well-deserving stories, Elizabeth Graver's "The Mourning Door" and Andrea Barrett's "Servants of the Map," appear in both volumes. Both volumes are valuable additions to academic and larger public libraries. Christine DeZelar-Tiedman, Univ. of Minnesota Libs., Minneapolis

From Booklist
The eighty-first edition of this series includes 17 stories chosen by the series editor, Dark, three of which were later awarded by this year's prize jury. Captivated early on by Andrea Barrett's long "Servants of the Map," Dark allocated three slots for longer stories, accommodating them by reducing the total to 17. One of those was later chosen as the first-prize winner: Mary Swan's "The Deep," a distinctively structured story composed of nearly 40 separately titled sections. Some well-known names fill this collection, including T. Coraghessan Boyle, Joyce Carol Oates, and Alice Munro, whose story "Floating Bridge" was given third prize and whose life work Dark also recognized with the infrequently bestowed Continuing Achievement Award. Overall, the stories reveal a range of characters and subjects, including Fred Leeborn's "That Winter," in which the middle-aged protagonist struggles to partition off future mortality, even as his sister announces she is dying. This is what prize winning stories are supposed to be
By adead_poet@hotmail.com
Unlike many volumes claiming to have the best short stories of the year, this one may actually be able to claim it. Of the 17 stories here, only three weren't very good (unfortunately the first prize my Mary Swan is one of those three). The rest were good, and there were three that stood out as phenomenal: T. Coraghessan Boyle's story of a young couple throwing their child away; Joyce Carol Oates's story of abduction, rape, and abuse; and David Schickler's story "The Smoker" which is so bizarre and so good that I will pick up his first collection of stories, which this one is included in. Most of the stories in this anthology are of a darker nature, but they are also very well written.

Short Stories Redifined
By Amazon Customer
As usual, "Prize Stories" is full of gems and surprises. The use of a panel of judges helps to ensure variety, unlike other yearly short story anthologies. I found this year's edition disconscerting, however, as three of the stories were anything but short. They were novellas. Not that there is anything wrong with longer works of fiction, but it is a different style of writing and not what I was looking for when I forked over the money for this book. Granted, these three stories are excellent and deserving of notice, but not between the covers of a "short story" anthology.
In all fairness, I must admit that in the books introduction, the series editor, Larry Dark, discussess the inclusion of these stories. He claims that he has (I am paraphrasing) grown weary of short stories, having seen so many. My suggestion is that he find something else to do, then.
OK. That wasn't nice. Sorry, Mr. Dark. The truth is, ultimately, that he has once again managed to compile a collection of some of the greatest writing printed in North America in the past year. Most noteworthy, I thought, was Alice Munro's "Floating Bridge," which took third place. Ms. Munro was also given a well deserved special citation award for her work over the years. She has been included in "Prize Stories" on several occasions and usually places second or third.
Aside from the quality of her work, Ms. Munro caught my attention simply because she is so regular. However, it would take me all day to discuss each story because every story in this anthology is simply fantastic. Deciding which ones were best must have been an extremely frustrating experience. I highly recommend this book if you are a lover of short stories. Because of the length of some of these stories, the number of stories included in this volume has been reduced from 20 to 17. These are 17 of the best examples of short story (and novella) writing I have seen yet. Enjoy!

engaging read
By J. Bray
Since I live in NYC and most of my read time is on the subway, i prefer to read anthologies. This is the first in a long time that i have enjoyed all the stories for various reasons. Especially David Schickler's "the Smoker." (I was so engaged in this story, i ordered his current book). The stories in this book are well written with likeable characters. And there are also some surprises in store.

Enchanting book on the stirrings of an affinity for plays of all shapes and sizes.
By K.Brower
This collection of pieces is utterly charming. Because it is a book about theatrical beginnings, it has an appeal for young and old alike. Don't be put off by the possibly daunting 'playwriting factor'. It is a wee book of wonderfully entertaining short stories. It is quite simply playful.

Dances of Death (NHB Modern Plays), by Howard Brenton, August Strindberg

A gripping new version of Strindberg's masterly, darkly hilarious depiction of the struggles and strains of marriage.

Meet Edgar and Alice. Married for over thirty years, theirs is a relationship of explosive mutual loathing. Strindberg's tale paints a compulsive and bitterly funny portrait of a magnificently doomed couple, whose ongoing battle threatens not only their future, but that of their friends and children as well.

This new version offers audiences a unique chance to see not only Part One but also the rarely performed Part Two of this masterpiece of European theatre condensed into a single two-act drama.

'ferociously intense... a howl of primitive power' The Times

'a blistering account of a mildewed marriage' Whatsonstage.com

'Howard Brenton has worked wonders... this fresh and exciting new version demands to be seen' British Theatre Guide

4 and half Stars RT BOOK REVIEWS:  "This story is an Indiana Jones-style thrill ride infused with just the right amount of romance and sexual tension. Deanna is a strong yet wounded woman, and the circumstances behind her mother's abandonment is just one reason to fly through this read. The other is the incredible chemistry Deanna has with her CIA handler Bill Santana. While the archaeology-style plot line isn't terribly original, it is executed flawlessly. . . The mystery, the family dynamic and the love story all blend together perfectly in this delightful adventure. Who needs Harrison Ford when you've got a tale like this?"

A Very good book
By Larena Hubble
Contemporary, New York & Mexico

Dr. Deanna Vasquez hasn't seen her renowned archeologist mother since she was child. Deanna's mother was obsessed with finding Montezuma's tomb and left the family behind in her quest to find it. Now a CIA agent comes into Deanna's life to tell her that her mother has been kidnapped by terrorists. Now Deanna is going to have to find a way to help the mother she hasn't seen in years and rescue her.

Guillermo "Bill" Santana is a CIA agent and he has been assigned the task of finding Deanna's mother and saving her from the terrorists that have her before they can use what she has found to their benefit. Bill is good at his job but he is suddenly finding it difficult to do a job he has never had trouble doing before.

What Bill and Deanna never expected was their attraction to each other and how that was going to interfere with the mission they are on. As Bill poses as Deanna's fiancée to draw out the terrorists so that they can stop them from getting what just might be deadly in the wrong hands. The item that Deanna's mother found that caused her to be kidnapped in the first time. It will be a race against time to get to the discovery before the terrorists do and before they get rid of Deanna's mother too.

This is a story that has an interesting premise that will draw the reader into the story without letting go. The story is fast paced and comes to life as the reader gets into the story. The story has some wonderful twists that will keep the reader turning the pages. This is one story that the reader will not be disappointed in once they start reading it.

Adventure Novel with Romance
By Amazon Customer
Montezuma's tomb has be an headache for Deanna for as long as she can remember, it was the reason her mother abandoned her when she was young. It took her mother away and the last thing she wants is to hear more about the tomb. When her mother calls and leaves her a mysterious message, Deanna wants to roll her eyes and ignore it. That probably would have been possible, until someone tries to kidnap her and she only escapes the kidnapping attempt with the help of a sexy CIA agent.

That same sexy CIA agent needs Deanna's help to locate her mother, the only problem is that Deanna doesn't really want to have anything to do with her mother. Deanna comes to realize is that the attacks aren't going to stop until she finds her mother and figures out exactly what the kidnappers want.

This book was a bit like Clive Cussler adventure novel (or some other adventure writers novel) with sex. And there are some steamy sex scenes in this book. Deanna must save the world, or at least her mother, from the bad guys who are going to destroy the world...ok, maybe not destroy the world, but cause a lot of havoc, destruction, and death. I like those books once in a while and I enjoyed this one. It was a fun romp.

It does have the typical adventure unbelievably factors too. I doubt that an archaeologist would be allowed to be that involved with on ingoing CIA investigation (but then, I don't work for the CIA, so maybe that is possible). It took me a while to get into this book, because of some of the features that I found far-fetched. I always have to remind myself to let go of some of those things when reading adventure novels of this type. After letting go, I ended up really enjoying this and the chemistry between the two main characters, Deanna and Bill. The chemistry had some shinning moments for me and at other times I had to scratch my head but I still enjoyed how the story played out.

I enjoyed the pacing and adventure of The Fifth Kingdom. 3.5 Stars.

I received an ebook of this from Carina Press via Netgalley.

Incredibly sexy!
By ChibiNeko
There's just something about books involving long lost treasures & historical mysteries that just lure me in. The promise of a steamy pairing doesn't hurt either. I got both, but I'll admit that this book was heavier on the steamy pairing than it was on the historical mystery. And I didn't mind a bit.

What made this book was the awesome pairing of Bill & Deanna. It's hot, it's tangible, & it's very easy to get wrapped up in. Piñeiro might have gone a little lighter on the anthropological side with this book, but she stepped it up with the romance. One of the more intriguing & inviting things of the romance here is that the gender roles are switched. Normally when it comes to initiating sex it's the man who takes charge, but in this book the women are the ones who are large & in charge. It's really a nice turn of pace to see a woman doing this.

The action scenes are tense and fast paced, but a good chunk of this book focuses on the romantic & emotional state of our two main characters. It might seem a little risky, but it does seem to work here. I really felt myself connect with Deanna, although I'll admit that at times I was a little impatient for the plot to shift towards the inevitable action & discovery scenes. This might result in some readers getting a little anxious to get to the action, but trust me- the first sex scene more than makes up for it. (Yowza!)

I really enjoyed Piñeiro's Aztec Gold & this is no exception. I'm really looking forward to the next book she puts out along these lines. Caridad Piñeiro has a wonderful way of bringing a scene to life that's really exciting.

4/5

From Booklist
Gr. 4-6. Five seventh-grade girls offer advice and commentary to other young women ready to begin middle school. They discuss social and academic expectations, friendships and bullies, boys and dating, personal expression through fashion and makeup, and body changes and image. The writing style is reassuring and casual ("keeping your family life on an even keel . . . snagging an awesome, diverse group of buds"), with frequent sidebars. The strongest sections are those concerning popularity, cliques, and body image (the condensed version: be yourself). There's also a dictionary of online chat lingo and directions for removing one's bra without removing one's shirt. Although this doesn't address sexual identity issues or bad family situations, the majority of rising middle-school readers will find much good advice here. Kay Weisman

My Daughter Loves This Book
By TLS
I got this for my youngest daughter the summer before she started middle school. She was very anxious about the change to a new school. My daughter read this book in a day, laughed out loud several times, and really loved it. She even pointed out passages and sections to me, so it was something that we could share. I truly believe it helped allay some of her fears and concerns. The book was apparently written by a group of girls who were in or recently completed middle school, which I think made it more "real" for my daughter. I highly recommend it for girls getting ready to attend or already in middle school. (Maybe not so much for boys.)

A Biased Review From a Proud Librarian
By Walter Mayes
It is important to note that I have never reviewed books online for anyone, but I have made an exception for the work of these five former students of mine. Their hard work on this book, begun when they were in the seventh grade, has really paid off in this handsome and direct guide for anyone trying to negotiate the halls of their new middle school. Funny, insightful, and full of real-life information teens can put to immediate use, this is an essential book to have for the transition into the teenage years.

From Booklist
Trenc follows up his Night at the Museum (2006) with another cheerfully outlandish romp starring the sleepy night watchman of the Museum of Natural History. After the high jinks with the dinosaurs in the last episode, Larry gets assigned to the more innocuous Ocean Hall. About a second later, he falls asleep, but he is woken up when his daughter calls to tell him that he left the bathtub faucet on, and now all of New York has been flooded. The museum gets tugged around by a blue whale and giant octopus; Larry finds his daughter swimming around with ancient amphibians (giving Trenc the opportunity to introduce the coelacanth, a living fossil fish); and other watery havoc ensues before Larry is able to set everything high and dry for the morning. Pencil lines and watercolor washes plunge the night city into deep watery blues, and the pop-eyed underwater critters are a uniformly friendly bunch. Little marine biologists will savor the thought of favored museum exhibits coming to life, and the story is jaunty enough to become a favorite for anyone who enjoys a fine, imaginative flight of fancy. Grades 1-3. --Ian Chipman

Review

“The author of Night at the Museum (1994, revised 2007, film version 2006) gives the marine exhibits a turn to frolic.” ―Kirkus

“The colors–blues, greens, yellow, pink–work well with the underwater theme, and the sight of half-submerged New York icons will excite kids who recognize them. This zany story is awash in good-natured bumbling, sea animals, and dream logic. Sure to be of interest due to the popularity of the movie based on The Night at the Museum.” ―School Library Journal

A Window in Copacabana: An Inspector Espinosa Mystery (Inspector Espinosa Mysteries), by Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza

A ruthless group of corrupt cops is playing a lethal game of cat and mouse in the latest installment in the seductive bestselling Brazilian crime series

Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Three policemen have been killed over the course of a few days. They were mediocre cops, and their deaths have a lot in common: they were eliminated by a cold-blooded assassin, who leaves no trace and likes to fire at point-blank range.

Immediately the police world is thrown into turmoil. Who would risk running around the city killing cops, even unpopular ones? People involved in drug trafficking? Other policemen? Espinosa, chief of the 12th Precinct, doesn't have much to go on. And when the body of a woman connected to one of the dead cops is found on the sidewalk below her apartment window, things get even more complicated, as a reputed "witness"-the wife of a high-ranking government official--becomes obsessed with the case, and with Espinosa.

Nothing is quite as it first appears as Espinosa finds himself in his old haunts of Leme and Copacabana, and in the all-too-familiar murky terrain of corruption, secret lives, greed, and fear.

Amazon.com Review
Cop killings never fail to excite interest--especially when, as in A Window in Copacabana, Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza's fourth slow-burning police procedural (after Southwesterly Wind), those murders are committed methodically and surgically, with "no passion, revenge, emotion: cold as ice." As Espinosa, the uncommonly thoughtful chief of Rio de Janeiro's 12th Precinct, postulates, "Whoever killed them was hired by someone. And furthermore, the real criminal is trying to send a message to other potential victims, a message that only they can understand."

It hardly matters that the three deceased officers weren't popular, or even well known. ("They're all cops who never stood out, who lived hidden lives, and who were as invisible and silent as their deaths.") The fact that each succumbed to "a single point-blank shot," coupled with suspicions that their slayings were somehow connected--by drug dealing, perhaps, or a bribery scheme--makes capturing their assassin crucial, not only to civic peacekeeping but to departmental morale. The stakes increase when those cops' mistresses start dropping violently, as well. Someone, it appears, wants to keep a tight lid on information that was shared between the policemen and their paramours. But who? And what, if anything, can be concluded from the subsequent, supposed suicide leap of a woman who was evidently mistaken by the killer for one of the cops' lovers? As Espinosa wades into the morass of avarice and secrecy at the core of this case, and begins to shed his preconceptions about the crimes, he's also distracted by a pair of young lovelies--one, the wife of a high-ranking government economist, obsessed with that dubious suicide; the other, a smart and resourceful ex-cabaret dancer on the run--whose attentions may do as much to foil his investigation as warm his heart.

Brazilian Garcia-Roza is a patient plotter, exposing each new development with the deceptive indifference of an exotic dancer shedding veils, knowing just how to build and maintain anticipation. And in Espinosa he has found his ideal partner in crime, a clever, compassionate, and oddly bookish, 40-something cop reconciled to the manifold disappointments of life and serene in the face of human tragedy. Although this author denies his cops, other than Espinosa, much depth of personality, A Window in Copacabana's Hitchcockian twists, sensual atmosphere, and unwillingness to deliver clichéd "perfect" justice in the end all make it an excellent entry in one of the coolest, most captivating crime series going. --J. Kingston Pierce

From Publishers Weekly
When three cops are found shot in the head in separate incidents in Garcia-Roza's sultry fourth Brazilian noir (after 2004's Southwesterly Wind), the chief of Rio's 12th precinct, Inspector Espinosa, suspects a single gunman. There are no witnesses, but from her dressing room window, Serena, a government official's elegant wife, sees a purse flung from a window across the street, soon followed by a woman who falls 10 stories to her death. The apparent suicide victim is identified as Celeste, the mistress of one of the murdered policemen. Obsessed with the dead woman, and having money and time, Serena rents Celeste's apartment in an effort to figure out why the tragedy occurred. Meanwhile, Espinosa sets up a special confidential task force reporting to him alone to investigate the crimes. The task force points to corruption in the police department and a coverup, since the three cops all led double lives, but what was at stake? For the mordantly witty, book-loving Espinosa, integrity is paramount. If his involvement leads to inevitable loss, he has the consolation of another job well done. Fans of sophisticated crime fiction with an exotic locale are in for a treat.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* This Brazilian mystery writer--who mines the traditional police-procedural vein, with inspired results-- maintains the stride he established in the first of his Inspector Espinosa novels published in the U.S., The Silence of the Rain (2002). The riveting plot Garcia-Roza weaves this time centers on a spree of cop killing in Chief Espinosa's precinct in Rio--and it appears that other cops are responsible. Whoever is carrying out this assassination program then begins offing the murdered cops' mistresses--and they all had them. Left with no choice but to form a special, elite task force, Espinosa and his group eventually--but not soon enough to satisfy the higher-ups--find increasingly close common bonds between the executed policemen that ultimately tighten into the only explanation possible for this set of curious circumstances. True to the author's custom in his previous Espinosa novels, the protagonist is given an attractive personal life: a love of books and reading and an eye for beautiful women (the latter trait plays a significant role in solving this particular crime). Sunny Rio proves as noirish a setting as sunny Los Angeles does for American mystery writers, and Garcia-Roza exploits the Brazilian city's seemliness and steaminess to perfection in tough but sensuous language ("The girl who taught the classes used the word 'psychology' like she used lipstick: to pretty up her mouth"). Murder in the Tropics
By Debra Hamel
The three policemen found shot to death execution-style over the course of a few hot summer days in Rio de Janeiro had more in common than the circumstances of their deaths. Each of the men, importantly, had had sufficient cash to support a mistress and keep a separate apartment intended for their assignations--a sure sign that the officers had been on the take. Investigating their deaths and the corruption that may have led to the murders is the unhappy task of Detective Espinosa, chief of Rio's 12th district, a somewhat melancholy character who tries vainly to combat the encroaching boredom of his increasingly routine work by walking to and from his apartment by different routes.

Given its challenges, Espinosa's latest case provides at least a temporary respite from tedium, particularly when the mistresses of the dead policemen prove to be in peril themselves. Two of the three women are murdered at once, and Espinosa undertakes to protect the third. One woman's death--she falls from a tenth-floor window--is witnessed by a neighbor watching from her apartment across the street, a happenstance which provides the police with one of their few clues and gives author Garcia-Roza his book's title.

A Window in Copacabana, translated into English from the original Portuguese, is the fourth book in Garcia-Roza's Detective Espinosa series. The peculiar circumstances of the murders under investigation and the surprising identity of the killer make the novel a good mystery. But what sets the book apart is the mood it sets--the languid air of a city in the tropics--and the philosophical, bibliophilic Espinosa, whose character emerges slowly, without fanfare, as the story progresses. Mystery readers, and anyone enticed by a Copacabana setting, should give the series a look.

A police crime story, Brazilian style
By Judy K. Polhemus
"A Window in Copacabana" is unlike any other police crime story; Inspector Espinosa is unlike other chiefs of precincts. The story is set in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

How this novel differs from others is its shocking absence of description. I have often heard readers say that they didn't complete certain books because of too much description or others say they skip it. On the other hand, I love description because it takes me into another place or another time. Without it, this novel could have been set in my city, except for the beach and the neighborhood names--Copacabana being the notable one. When Espinosa walks down the streets, I can picture certain streets in my city that have ethnic flair. This lack of description is certainly not a deleterious factor, but it is an odd one.

Written by "distinguished academic" Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza, the novel indeed reflects the academic mind in its studied logic and understated contemplative thinking demonstrated by Espinosa. In fact, the critic from Amazon likened Garcia-Roza's style to Hitchcock in the use of that subtle yet maddening building of suspense. The danger just oozes out from the pages, yet we never see it. The story ends with the guilty person evading punishment--for now. For we know Insp. Espinosa is on the case.

The story revolves around the murder, execution-style, of three ordinary, unobtrusive police officers, followed by the murder of two of their three mistresses. The third eludes murder by hiding and seeking Espinosa's help. (Perhaps the acquisition of mistresses with no one, not even the wives, blinking is a characteristic of Brazilian culture. This does not seem to be common in my city!)

Then the title character adds a new element to the investigation: she saw one of the mistresses being thrown out of her tenth floor apartment, which is just across the way from her tenth floor apartment. She also adds an element to Espinosa's life--she seduces him. Again, it is presented so matter of fact. To my surprise, all three women in the story kiss him fully on the mouth as if this is a normal greeting. The women include his longstanding lover with neither interested in marriage, Serena, the title character who witnesses this key murder from her window in the Copacabana neighborhood, and the last mistress, who tries to elude the assassin.

When I finished the book, I wasn't sure whether or not I would recommend it, but after writing this review, I see just how interesting the novel is and how it does reflect another culture and a police chief's way of solving a crime. It also shows, apparently, a different attitude toward capture of a criminal, especially one who killed police officers: all in due time. For those who find description an impediment to the forward progress of a crime story, this book was written for you.

Note: The book jacket shown above differs from mine, which depicts inside the window of the title and looking across the beach to that hill. The picture on my copy is much more subtle and effective.

"I haven't done anything to make anyone want to kill me."
By Luan Gaines
One after another, three policemen are murdered in Rio, throwing the force into an uproar. Soon after, their mistresses are targeted for death. Clearly an assassin is at work, obliterating any evidence of conspiracy between the policemen and their mistresses. Head of the 12th Precinct, Inspector Espinoza soon scents the odor of corruption and assembles a task force of a select few. When the murder of the third mistress is averted only by mistaken identity, Espinoza is determined to uncover whatever corruption pollutes his department, find the killer and protect the third woman, who remains at large, hiding from her would-be assailant with Espinoza's help. A phone call brings another woman into the picture, a witness who saw the last victim fall from the window of her apartment. Unfortunately, the witness, a diplomat's wife, thinks she may have been observed by the murderer, making her another potential victim.

Things come in threes for Espinoza, three policemen, three females killed, and the three woman suddenly in his life: his lover, Irene; Celeste, the victim who escaped; and the seductive witness, Serena. Irene has long been Espinoza's love interest, a woman who fascinates the inspector, but the other two have come to his attention through the spate of recent murders. Faced with a complicated mystery that doesn't bode well for the 12th precinct or the police department in general, the need to protect the innocent and a recent concern for the direction of his days, Espinoza is kept busy in both his personal and professional life. A thorough and logical detective, the inspector is more than capable of solving the murders with the help of his trusted assistants, deconstructing the crimes and separating the guilty from the innocent. In this exotic locale, Espinoza tackles his his work with a passion matched by his romance with Irene, the fascinating lady who has captured his affections. With the sights and sounds of Rio as a background, Espinoza is a natural, moving through the streets of a city where death never takes a holiday. Luan Gaines/2006.
