About the Author
Edmund Abegg earned a master’s degree in history from Rutgers University and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University. He is now professor emeritus of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He has published articles on philosophy of history, ethics, and political morality.

Excellent Introduction to Current Issues in Political Philosophy

The disenchanted world Abegg speaks of is one "with no objective cosmic morality." In it there are "humans like us in every way except that they have not been strongly indoctrinated into any moral or political positions." Roughly, they are reasonable people who think the world they lived in is the natural world.
It is on a naturalistic worldview that Abegg sets forth a framework within which to discuss two different choices of goals that polities (roughly, societies with governments) can choose to realize: autonomy and welfare. Autonomy, crudely, is individual freedom to engage in self determination, self development (crudely, "freedom.") Welfare of course, includes those goods that contribute to a healthy and happy life. A difficulty inherent in the project is the inevitable connection of these goals and Abegg deals with it by admitting that polities can be dual - goaled. Nevertheless, polities can differ considerably in the value they attach, by policies and practices, to each of these goals.
The value of this text does not lie in prescription of moral rules, strategies, policies or goals. It lies in giving a comprehensive, commonsense description of people in the world in which we live together in societies in which we seek collective goals. The book is written in clear, plain English. Any reader seeking updates on topics in analytic political philosophy will find it useful. The issue of autonomy versus welfare is an abstraction related to the apparent polar opposites of the Republican and Democratic parties and the text discusses events and issues as recent as January, 2013. It would make a good introductory work in a first course in political philosophy.
A caveat: the author of this review is a thirty-five year colleague of the author of the book and agrees with him in all major positions.
