At 32, Clark abandoned a career in marketing to enroll in culinary school and fulfill her dream of becoming a chef. A divorce from her alcoholic husband followed, and Clark, chopping carrots for minimum wage, was left to raise their two young daughters on her own. Repeatedly comparing being a chef to motherhood, she describes all of the young cooks she helped to train as her children. Reflecting Clark's ongoing struggle to balance work and family, the book's 40-plus recipes include her eldest daughter's Favorite Cornflake-Coated Pork Chops and the Pink Medicine Placebo administered to her youngest after a greasy Braised Cube Steak caused her to slip off the monkey bars. Clark's enthusiasm for drawing people to the table is engaging, but she prefers to make excuses for her high job turnover, including several firings. In 2000, she invested her savings in her own restaurant in Washington, D.C., in a neighborhood where cloth napkins stood out more than vagrants. After a rocky start, Colorado Kitchen now often has a line around the block, and Clark thrives on being her own boss. I loved the book and the insights which Gillian shares about life, parenting and her career as a chef. I lived in a neighborhood like Brightwood where Colorado Kitchen is located. Kudos for Gillian for her sheer determination and willingness to provide the real DC with a sit down restaurant. I've copied several recipes and am eager to try them. I no longer live in DC but when I return I will venture to Colorado Kitchen for a real treat.

Out of the frying pan will inspire you!

Having been someone who has always loved to cook and dreamed of being a cook, this book was one I could relate to. Gillian tells the tale of how she changed her life. A very inspiring story for any woman in any field. The recipes are a great addition to this memoir.

An interesting biography with recipes.

I saw Gillian Clark on a Bobby Flay showdown having to do with fried chicken and was charmed and impressed with both her and her recipes, so it was a pleasure to read her story and get to know her better. I just wish she had given more recipes so that the book would be 1/2 and 1/2. I've made her fried chicken and it's to die for!
