PreS-Gr 2-On the cover, bold black lines on an angry tomato-red background depict the scowling title character. Seeger sets the emotional tone from the very start: this is one mean bull. Front endpapers offer a clue to his behavior as readers see a larger, adult bull shout, "Go away!" The rejected little guy hangs his head, and, as many real-life bullies do, turns his hurt into anger. When he comes upon a group of animals who want to play, he puffs himself up in a near-identical pose to his adult counterpart and shouts, "No!" He proceeds to insult them with literal names ("CHICKEN!" "PIG!") that lend a bit of levity and humor to an otherwise serious story. With each insult, the bull's bravado makes him larger and larger, filling and then expanding outside the frame of the pages. Children will recognize and respond to this powerful visual depiction of rage. By the time he yells "YOU STINK!" at the skunk, only his two giant front hooves and enormous snout are visible. When the bull is finally forced to confront what he has become, viewers see him deflate like an overinflated balloon and become small. Again, Seeger lightens the mood with this touch of cartoon whimsy. Spare text and simple drawings allow the antibullying message to come across clearly without being heavy-handed or didactic. When a friendly rabbit, chicken, and turtle ask him if he wants to play, to each smaller animal, he bellows his answer (NO!). He grows larger (CHICKEN!), and LARGER (SLOWPOKE!) with each name he calls. After seven name-calling episodes, he has grown so enormous that only his hoof fits in the picture book. The tables are turned when a goat yells BULLY! Bully? asks the bull, looking hurt and insecure. Suddenly deflated, he apologizes to his friends and asks, Wanna play? Bold black lines and flat colors define the images of the animals, which stand out against the textured, ivory-toned backgrounds. Delivered in speech balloons, the only text is terse dialogue delivered in a font that grows larger as the bull roars louder. His ego deflates in an amusing, cartoonlike scene, showing him spinning like a punctured balloon. Perhaps the most unusual aspect of the book is the consideration of the bully’s point of view. Intelligently conceived and beautifully executed, this picture book is visually and verbally pared down to essentials, making it accessible to a wide age range. A Perfect Book

Bullying is one of those politically correct subjects for a book that libraries seek out. There are some good ones available, and Laura Vaccaro Seeger's Bully is a great addition to the list, cutting right to the heart of the problem with a truth and simplicity typical of Seeger's fine work. First page. Here's a big bull. He's a bully (Get it?) He tells the little bull to go away. He calls the chicken a chicken (Get it?) He calls the turtle a slowpoke. (Get it?) He calls the pig a pig (Get it?) He tells the bee to buzz off. (Get it?) Each insulting encounter with the different animals is incredibly apt, brevity being the soul of Seeger's wit. So many times books about bullying deal with physical hurting, but another kind of hurtful bullying is taunting, and the worst kind of taunting is being belittled for what you, in fact, are: red-haired, speech impaired, black, fat, whatever, This is what a great picture book is all about, exactly what we expect Seeger to deliver, a concept reduced to the charm of a single, arrow like thought. Summary: The story unfolds in only 21 words. Before the title page, an older bull tells a young one, “Go away!” The young bull looks hurt, but when his friends ask him to play, he responds angrily. “Chicken!” he says to the chicken, “Slowpoke!” to the turtle, and so on. With each insult, he seems to grow larger, until finally the goat stands up to him and calls him a bully. When he realizes the goat is right, the bull seems to deflate back to his normal size. “I’m sorry,” he says, and all is forgiven as the friends go off to play.
Pros: This book is simple enough for kindergarteners to understand, yet could be used as a springboard for discussion for fifth graders. Why is the young bull so mean to his friends? What happens when they respond in different ways? How are they able to resolve the situation? The cartoon-like illustrations are cute and appealing. Using animals as characters makes it easier to discuss the topic of bullying in a universal way.
Cons: None, in my opinion. It is a very brief book, and it would be good to plan on some discussion time. If you’re just looking for a quick read, this is probably not the best choice.

Huge issue today. Teaches empathy for both sides, the 'bullier' and the 'bully-ee', how to deal with bullies, how to work things out and possibly all get along together. Teaches understanding and being 'NICE'.
