Holiday Novella!
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
In Some Kind of Wonderful by Beth Ciotta, Maya and Zach have been best friends forever. They grew up in Sugar Creek, Vermont, but after high school they both went their separate ways. Maya to open a Cupcake bakery with a friend Giselle, and Zach to serve in the Marines. Now, years later, they are meeting again in person when both will be back in Sugar Creek for the holidays. Maya has brought her friend Giselle with her to meet Zach. Giselle lusted after a photo Zach sent Maya, and ever since they've been exchanged some very steamy correspondence...except it's been Maya writing for Giselle, something Zach does not know!

Maya has unexpected mixed feelings about Giselle being with Zach after she sees the two of them together and decides they'd make a perfect couple. When Giselle and Zach realize pretty fast they are not going to be a couple...Maya is both relieved and disbelieving. What she is feeling for Zach, has caught her off guard. Zach is seeing Maya in a whole new light too, but is not quite sure what to do about it, if anything. Maybe what Zach and Maya are looking for is what's been there all along, if they are brave and honest enough to take the chance. With a snowstorm, an unforgettable night and some Christmas magic, there might be hope for them as a couple after all!

Some Kind of Wonderful by Beth Ciotta is a novella that fits in with Beth's Cupcake Lover's series, but can definitely be read as a stand alone. You will see some of the characters from the previous books, but the story line of Some Kind of Wonderful is completely independent.

Beth gives us a sweet, heart warming romantic novella in Some Kind of Wonderful. As usual, her writing is flawless, she will pull you in and you will feel like you are right there with Maya and Zach. In the space of this novella Beth manages to convey the emotions of Maya and Zach perfectly, and makes them easy to relate to. The steam factor between Maya and Zach is definitely there. Beth doesn't go into great detail with that, but I honestly don't feel it's necessary for the story. The cats, the snow, and the magic make Some Kind of Wonderful all the more unique and fulfilling. With Beth's descriptions I felt like I was in a winter wonderland myself!

Some Kind of Wonderful is a great quick read that will leave you feeling happy. I'd recommend this to any romance reader looking for some holiday love!

Rating of five cupcakes for Beth Ciotta's Some Kind of Wonderful, a contemporary romance must read.
By Emsy Van Wyck
A very good friend, whom I trust implicitly when it comes to book recommendations, told me I had to read Beth Ciotta's Cupcake Lovers novels as I'd fall in love with her writing and the town of Sugar Creek, Vermont. Well, when I heard that, I quickly started to devour the novels - and just like cupcakes, they're delicious, addictive, and absolutely perfect.

First of all, may I say if you haven't already, please, please get start reading the series as this is a fun, romantic, sexy, touching, and all together pleasurable romp. Ciotta is a master at making you laugh while you read, while at the same time you absolutely need to make sure that the Kleenex box is close at hand as tears sometimes fall.

Some Kind of Wonderful is a beautiful holiday novella. With the aim of the Cupcake Lovers club to support serviceman, it's only fitting that this story focuses on former Marine Scout Sniper Zachary Cole and Orlando-based cupcake baker Maya Templeton. Best friends from their Sugar Creek childhood, Maya's taken a Cyrano role in Zachary's love life after her business partner and very sexy friend, Giselle, took one look at his photo and fell into lust. While Giselle's photos definitely sparked Zach's interest; his very hot letters were reciprocated by his platonic best friend Maya, not Giselle. But May is the one who now stands on the outside looking in as Giselle and Zach meet at a Cupcake Lovers Christmas party in Sugar Creek.

But all is not lost as best friends sometimes, with a little Christmas magic, might evolve into something more. In fact, Ciotta channels a little Charles Dicken's with some holiday visitors to Zach to smooth the way. The way in which Ciotta lets us see who Zach and Maya are, what their fears are, and what their hopes and dreams are is beautiful. That she sprinkles a little holiday magic along the way - just perfect. Again, five cupcakes, perhaps decorated with some candy canes.

Cupcake Lovers is a series that combines an innocence of heart with some very steamy romance - as well as a zany crew of characters that you will fall in love with. I've already marked my calendar for the 1 July 2014 release date of In the Mood for Love, where we will find out what happens with Harper Day and Sam McCloud, who will now have the leading roles in the series.

Some kind of surprise!!!

ARC given for free by Netgalley for honest review.

Maya Templeton comes home for the holiday's to visit her family. Giselle, her best friend and business partner wanted to tag along so she could finally meet Zach. Zach is an old friend of Maya's but they grew apart because she went off to pastry school and he joined the Marines. Since Giselle and Zach were more alike she set them up through mail. Giselle has been sending him letters and pictures for months and finally gets to meet him. Maya helped Giselle write the letters so she has read them a million times so she gets them right.

Zachary Cole was a sniper in the Marines but was sent home from Afghanistan after being injured during active duty. The only thing that kept him going we're the sexy letters and pictures Giselle sent him. The hot fantasies she would write him about were so amazing that he couldn't wait to meet her and see if she'd live up to what she wrote.

Zachs family is having a get together for Christmas, and that's where the girls head. His mom explains that he's been injured, and isn't quite 100% so she hurries to the kitchen to find him. When she reaches her destination, all she sees is him and it seems like they were never apart. She runs to him and latches on for dear life. As they both hold back tears she makes sure he's ok. She hits him in he shoulder, and gripes him out for not telling her, through all the letters she has sent that he had been hurt.

As the day goes on, it turns out Giselle isn't really Zachs' cup of tea and he hers so they part ways. Heading home and finding Maya was better than any time he spent with Giselle. They cuddled on the couch and watched a movie like old times. Will they each get a Christmas surprise they didn't expect? Could they find the happiness they each deserve?

I gave this story 4 stars because it was short and lacked the sexy time I usually like. That being said it was very enjoyable and I look forward to reading the rest in the series. Zach is so passionate yet scared that you just wanna give him a big hug. Maya is so conflicted with wanting Zach, but not feeling pretty or liked enough is holding her back from accepting him into her heart. I really liked how Maya was unsure of her feelings and her relationship with Zach, it added a very realistic state of mind that I could easily relate to. The characters were fun to learn about and this story is more of a sweet romance that is safe for anyone over 13 to read.

Alice: Princess Andrew of Greece, by Hugo Vickers

"In 1953, at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Alice was dressed from head to foot in a long gray dress and a gray cloak, and a nun's veil. Amidst all the jewels, and velvet and coronets, and the fine uniforms, she exuded an unworldly simplicity. Seated with the royal family, she was a part of them, yet somehow distanced from them. Inasmuch as she is remembered at all today, it is as this shadowy figure in gray nun's clothes..."

Princess Alice, mother of Prince Phillip, was something of a mystery figure even within her own family. She was born deaf, at Windsor Castle, in the presence of her grandmother, Queen Victoria, and brought up in England, Darmstadt, and Malta.

In 1903 she married Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, and from then on her life was overshadowed by wars, revolutions, and enforced periods of exile. By the time she was thirty-five, virtually every point of stability was overthrown. Though the British royal family remained in the ascendant, her German family ceased to be ruling princes, her two aunts who had married Russian royalty had come to savage ends, and soon afterwards Alice's own husband was nearly executed as a political scapegoat.

The middle years of her life, which should have followed a conventional and fulfilling path, did the opposite. She suffered from a serious religious crisis and at the age of forty-five was removed from her family and placed in a sanitarium in Switzerland, where she was pronounced a paranoid schizophrenic. As her stay in the clinic became prolonged, there was a time where it seemed she might never walk free again. How she achieved her recovery is just one of the remarkable aspects of her story.

From Publishers Weekly
A chain-smoking, nearly deaf princess who ministered to the sick in Greek hospitals and soup kitchens, was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic at age 45, fancied herself a nun and sheltered a Jewish family during the Holocaust (for which she was posthumously given the title Righteous among the Nations, an honor Oskar Schindler also received), Alice is a biographer's dream. Born under the watchful eye of her great-grandmother Queen Victoria in Windsor Castle in 1885, Alice married a Greek prince who was actually Danish, German and Russian. And while she was devoted to Greece, she and her royal in-laws were never fully accepted by their adopted subjects. At age 84, she died in Buckingham Palace, where she lived at the end of her life at the behest of her youngest child and only son, Prince Philip, and his wife, Queen Elizabeth. This is the first biography of Alice, and it's hard to imagine anyone doing a better or more comprehensive job than Vickers, an authority on Europe's royals whose previous subjects include the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. By crafting the perfect blend of juicy gossip and historical details, Vickers makes it abundantly clear why Alice deserves to be known as more than just the queen's mother-in-law. Among the more memorable images he captures: the ill-fated Czar Nicholas of Russia, who was married to Alice's Aunt Alix, pelting his niece with a bag of rice and a shoe at her 1903 wedding. Never one to shrink from a challenge, Alice caught the shoe and used it to hit her uncle on the head. 16 pages b&w photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Vickers's portrait of Princess Alice of Greece reveals a woman whose life was both tragic and courageous. A great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria and mother to Prince Phillip of Great Britain, Alice had relatives in most of the royal houses of Europe. But despite such grand connections, her life wasn't easy. She witnessed firsthand the brutality of the First and Second Balkan Wars (1912-13) and World War I, and eventually she and her husband, Prince Andrew of Greece, were forced to live in exile, beginning an "extraordinary nomadic existence." Such trying circumstances eventually sent her over the edge, and she was committed to a sanitarium, but through sheer determination she recovered. Vickers emphasizes Alice's many virtuous characteristics, such as her profound spirituality and giving nature. She received the Royal Red Cross for her nursing activities during the Balkan Wars, and later in life she adopted a simple nun's habit and founded a sisterhood whose mission was to "go out into the world to nurse." Although Vickers spends too much time on unnecessary detail, for example citing nearly every case of influenza Alice contracted, this biography of a relatively unknown and complex princess is worth telling. From Booklist
Princess Alice of Battenberg, born into minor German royalty, married the fourth son of the king of Greece, and their son, Philip, married the heiress to the British throne and is now, of course, the duke of Edinburgh, consort of Queen Elizabeth II. Not a vital player in the world of nineteenth- and twentieth-century European royalty, Princess Alice was nevertheless an interesting figure deserving the complete biographical treatment accorded her by royalty expert Vickers. Descendants of Princess Alice approached the author about writing a biography and consequently gave him access to records and arranged key interviews; the result is a marshaling of every known fact about Princess Alice's life. Marriage into the Greek royal family proved tumultuous, as the Greeks were prone to sending their king off packing now and again. Her marriage, initially a love match, eventually wound down to the point of estrangement. Princess Alice suffered psychological stress that sent her to a sanitarium, and her religious fervor compelled her to found an order of nuns. For active royalty collections. Brad Hooper

A Little Known but Admirable Princess
By John D. Cofield
I would imagine that most people outside the ranks of royalty enthusiasts have never heard of Princess Alice of Battenberg, Princess Andrew of Greece. If anything, they know her as Prince Philip's mother. And that's a pity, because Hugo Vicker's new biography reveals that Alice Battenberg was a truly remarkable individual.Alice was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, which must have seemed her only interesting point at the time of her birth. Her father was morganatic (half-royal) and her mother a princess from a minor German state. Her first years were spent among her multitudinous family (Vickers provides footnotes and trees to help sort everyone out), in the background and unnoticed. Alice's marriage was hardly a glamorous match. Prince Andrew was a younger son of the King of Greece and while charming, not all that interesting. Alice lived quietly until the 1920s, when a revolution in Greece and her own personal troubles caused her a certain notoriety. Vickers does a good job of covering Alice's physical and emotional ailments and is most successful in describing her growing religious faith. In this Alice is similar to her two Russian Aunts, Tsarina Alexandra and Grand Duchess Elizabeth. During World War II Alice protected a Jewish family at grave risk to herself, so that she was later declared Righteous Among the Gentiles by Israel. After World War II Alice continued to live in the background, now overshadowed by her only son, Prince Philip, who became the consort of Queen Elizabeth II. She remained a loving and wise part of the Royal Family however, as memories of her from her grandchildren and other relations attest.Alice, Princess Andrew of Greece deserves a place in the library of anyone interested in royalty as well as anyone who cares to read about honorable and decent people.

Great story, so-so writing....
By Cynthia K. Robertson
Princess Alice of Greece is one of the most fascinating of all the royals, but unfortunately, the least known. Perhaps the British Royal Family has kept the lid on this biography because of embarrassment? But Hugo Vickers tells this long repressed story in Alice: Princess Andrew of Greece.
Alice was born when royalty was at its zenith, and she was surrounded by some of the most important personalities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her great-grandmother was Queen Victoria. Her father was Louis of Battenberg, First Sea Lord and her brother was Dickie Mountbatten, Last Viceroy of India. Alice's sister Louise became Queen of Sweden, and her mother's sister was Tsarina Alexandra. Alice's youngest child and only son is Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II.
Alice topped an idyllic childhood by marrying Prince Andrew of Greece. In a day when most marriages were arranged, this was a love match. There was no familial opposition as Alice was from a morganatic marriage and her groom the 4th son of King George I of Greece. Unfortunately, her married life was marred by sadness, heartbreak and tragedy. The Greek monarchy and the Greek government were as unstable as the weather. On numerous occasions, Alice had to flee Greece with her family for extended periods of time. She lived through two world wars where a good many of her relatives were on the German (enemy) side including her sons-in-law. Her father-in-law was assassinated by a disgruntled Greek, and dozens of Russian relatives, including aunt Tsarina Alexandra and her entire family, were murdered during the Russian Revolution. A plane crash in England in 1937 took the lives of one daughter, son-in-law, two grandchildren, and a Hessian aunt. Perhaps as a result of these many setbacks, Alice succumbed to schizophrenia and had to be institutionalized for a good many years. The story of Alice's subsequent recovery, her conversion to orthodoxy, her becoming a nun and establishing a religious order make for a fascinating saga.
Unfortunately, this book is not without some major flaws. First, Vickers writing style leaves a lot to be desired and his run-on sentences are a big distraction. One example can be found on page 77: "Presently the whole party moved to Buckingham Palace, attending a ball at the Russian Embassy and the King's Birthday Parade, in which Andrea [Andrew] rode to Horseguards Parade in the procession directly behind the King, little realizing that this would one day be the annual duty of his yet unborn son." The many footnotes (sometimes 3 or 4 per page) are very tiresome and provide more information than we really need. I have no clue how someone could read this book for a book-on-tape. Also, the author could do a better job identifying Russian Royalty. Most Russians are identified by their first name, followed by a patronymic (their father's name followed by "ovich"). For instance, the tsar's name was Nicholas Alexandrovich (Nicholas, son of Alexander). Vickers doesn't follow this rule and when he names a Grand Duke Michael, it is often difficult to know which of the dozen or so Grand Duke Michael's he is referring to.
Still, Alice is an interesting book and it was not an easy story to write, as Alice destroyed most of her papers and letters throughout her lifetime. It also includes many never before seen photos of Alice and her extended family, including a poignant photo of her processing in her nun's habit for the coronation of her daughter-in-law. So for readers interested in royalty, suffer through the poor writing and discover the real story underneath.

An excellent biography of Prince Philip's Mother.
By David Logan
This really is a most enjoyable read about a fascinating woman. Princess Alice was the Mother of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of HM Queen Elizabeth II. If you want to understand the family Prince Philip grew up in I can think of no better book. Princess Alice was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria and married Prince Andrew of Greece. Prince Philip is her only living child and her youngest. This book is a must for those interested in the Battenberg family of which Princess Alice was a member. Having read about Princess Alice's Mother, Princess Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt (eldest sister of Tsarina Alexandra) who married Prince Louis of Battenberg (later Marquis and Marchioness of Milford-Haven) this book really is worthwhile but stands very well alone. There are loads of fantastic pictures. I highly recommend it.

Carys Llewellyn : Writer and book reviewer
Everything we do in our daily lives reflects our own person ‘life-style’ and in ‘The Lifestyle Writer’, Sarah-Beth Watkins shows how to write for the home and family market. The book opens with the words: “Look around you. What does your life contain? Home, family, children, grandchildren, eating out, good health, holidays abroad? Or maybe it’s not so sunny and your life includes relationship issues, a lack of a decent holiday, imminent surgery and a clapped out car. Wherever you are in your life, whatever you are experiencing, you can turn your life stories into saleable articles for the lifestyle market. People want to read other people’s stories. Humans are fascinated by other humans; what they’ve got, what they are doing, where they are doing it and whether we can do it too!”
And, she makes clear, you don’t have to be a specialist in any given field to contribute lifestyle articles, just having the relevant ‘life’ experience is enough. From letters to the editor to full-length articles and interviews, ‘The Lifestyle Writer’ shows that lifestyle topics are one of the widest market-outlets open to the freelance writer. Highly recommended.

DIY is in oiur genes...
By Jenny Argante
New Zealanders buy lifestyle books of all kinds and the home and family market is wide open for your contribution. ‘Lifestyle’ includes anything to do with the home and the family, both the traditional, the new and the alternative, and including travel and technology.
We’ve all got particular topics within this general definition that interest and us, that we know about from direct experience, from talking to experts or from reading up on what intrigues us. That’s important, because this is a market that you must write for with unforced enthusiasm – you must be as keen to tell your readers all about it as they are keen to read it.
Watkins is full of helpful advice on how to dip a toe into this wide, wide pool of possibility, a generous percentage of which she personally introduces you to. She’s got tips to get you started, hints on how to keep going, and practical instruction on things like interviewing and how to prepare and present your ideas and your writing to interested editors of magazines in this genre.
Ideas – and where to get them. The hook that draws the reader in. The important style changes you need to make between different markets, and when you’re writing for the page or for online magazines. Exercises are included to build skills and increase confidence when it comes to putting those ideas into a marketable format.
We’re regularly challenged in our daily living – we’ve all got problems, big or small, and we like to know that someone out there has been through the same thing or can tell us how to fix it, how to bear it or how to beat it.
The most important lesson Sarah-Beth Watkins shares with fellow-writers is that you don’t need to be a specialist to contribute, and that contribution can be anything from letters to the editors or full-length, high-paid articles.
An excellent book for anyone interested in sharing experiences on how to do it. Like Bryan Winters restoring his keeler over two years, or Jillian Sullivan building her straw-bale house up in the boon docks or me wanting to know why my orange and lemon trees died within weeks.
Or you, perhaps?

The Invisible Code: A Peculiar Crimes Unit Mystery (Bryant & May series Book 10), by Christopher Fowler

London’s craftiest and boldest detectives, Arthur Bryant and John May, are back in this deviously twisting mystery of black magic, madness, and secrets hidden in plain sight.

When a young woman is found dead in the pews of St. Bride’s Church—alone and showing no apparent signs of trauma—Arthur Bryant assumes this  case will go to the Peculiar Crimes Unit, an eccentric team tasked with solving London’s most puzzling murders. Yet the city police take over the investigation, and the PCU is given an even more baffling and bewitching assignment.

Called into headquarters by Oskar Kasavian, the head of Home Office security, Bryant and May are shocked to hear that their longtime adversary now desperately needs their help. Oskar’s wife, Sabira, has been acting strangely for weeks—succumbing to violent mood swings, claiming an evil presence is bringing her harm—and Oskar wants the PCU to find out why. And if there’s any duo that can deduce the method behind her madness, it’s the indomitable Bryant and May.

When a second bizarre death reveals a surprising link between the two women’s cases, Bryant and May set off on a trail of clues from the notorious Bedlam hospital to historic Bletchley Park. And as they are drawn into a world of encrypted codes and symbols, concealed rooms and high-society clubs, they must work quickly to catch a killer who lurks even closer than they think.

Witty, suspenseful, and ingeniously plotted, The Invisible Code is Christopher Fowler at the very top of his form.

The Case

One

Close to God

There was a witch around here somewhere.

The Fleet Street office workers who sat in the cool shadow of the church on their lunch breaks had no idea that she was hiding among them. They squatted in the little garden squares while they ate their sandwiches, queued at coffee shops and paced the pavements staring at the screens of their smartphones, not realising that she was preparing to call down lightning and spit brimstone.

On the surface the witch was one of them, but that was just a disguise. She had the power to change her outward appearance, to look like anyone she was standing near.

Lucy said, ‘She won’t be somebody posh. Witches are always poor.’

Tom said, ‘I can’t tell who’s posh. Everyone looks the same.’

He was right; to a child they did. Grey suits, black suits, white shirts, black skirts, blue ties, print blouses, black shoes. London’s workforce on the move.

Lucy pulled at her favourite yellow T-shirt and felt her tummy rumble. ‘She’ll have to appear soon. They often travel in threes. When a witch starts to get hungry, she loses concentration and lets go of her disguise. The spell will weaken and she’ll turn back into her real self.’

She was crouching in the bushes, and wanted to stand up because it was making her legs hurt, but knew she might get caught if she did. The flowerbeds bristled with tropical plants that had spiny razor-sharp leaves and looked as if they should be somewhere else. A private security guard patrolled the square, shifting the people who looked as if they belonged somewhere else, too.

‘What does she really look like?’ asked Tom. ‘I mean, when she drops her disguise?’

Lucy answered without hesitation. ‘She has a green face and a hooked nose covered in hairy warts, and long brown teeth and yellow eyes. And her breath smells of rotting sardines.’ She thought for a moment. ‘And toilets.’

Tom snorted in disgust as he looked around the courtyard for likely suspects. Nearby, an overweight woman in her mid- thirties was standing in a doorway eating a Pret A Manger cray- fish and rocket sandwich. She seemed a likely candidate. The first of the summer’s wasps were hovering around, scenting the remains of office lunches. The woman anxiously batted one away as she ate.

‘It can’t be her,’ said Lucy.

‘Why not?’ asked Tom.

‘Witches don’t feel pain, so she wouldn’t be scared of a stupid wasp.’

‘Can a witch be a man?’

‘No, that would be a warlock. It has to be a woman.’

Tom was getting tired of the game. Lucy seemed to be making up extra rules as she went along. The June sun shone through a gap in the buildings and burned the back of his neck. The sky above Salisbury Court was as blue as the sea looked in old films.

He was starting to think that this was a stupid way to spend a Saturday morning when he could have been at soccer. He had been looking forward to seeing the Dr Who exhibition as well, but right at the last minute his dad had to work instead, and said, ‘You can come with me to the office,’ as if it was a reasonable substitute. There was nothing to do in the office. You weren’t allowed to touch the computers or open any of the drawers. His dad seemed to like being there. He always cheered up when he had to go into the office on a Saturday.

The only other father who had brought his child in that morning was Lucy’s, so he was stuck playing with a girl until both of their fathers had finished their work. At least Lucy knew about the game, which was unusual because most girls didn’t play games like that. She explained that she had two older brothers and always ended up joining in with them. She didn’t tell him they had outgrown the game now and spent their days wired into hip-hop and dodgy downloads.

‘How about that one?’ said Lucy, taking the initiative. Her brothers could never make up their minds about anything, and always ended up arguing, so she was used to making all the decisions.

‘Nah, she’s too pretty,’ said Tom, watching a slender girl in a very short grey skirt stride past to the building at the end of the courtyard.

‘That’s the point. The prettier they look on the outside, the uglier they are inside. Too late, she’s gone.’

‘I’m bored now.’

‘Five more minutes. She’s here somewhere.’ There were only a few workers left in the square, plus a motorcycle courier who must have been stifling in his helmet and leathers.

‘It’s this one. I have a feeling. I bet she belongs to a coven, that’s a club for witches. Remember, we have to get them before they get us. Let’s check her out. Come on.’

Lucy led the way past a sad-looking young woman who had just seated herself on the bench nearest the church. She had opened a paperback and was reading it intently. Lucy turned to Tom with an air of theatrical nonchalance and pointed behind the flat of her palm.

‘That’s definitely her.’

‘How can we tell if she’s a witch?’ Tom whispered.

‘Look for signs. Try to see what she’s reading.’

‘I can’t walk past her again, she’ll see.’

‘Wait, I’ve got an idea.’ Tom had stolen a tennis ball from his father’s office. Now he produced it from his pocket. ‘Catch, then throw it back to me in her direction. I’ll miss and I’ll have to go and get it.’

Lucy was a terrible actress. If the sad-faced young woman had looked up, she would have stopped and stared at the little girl gurning and grimacing before her.

‘I’m throwing now,’ Lucy said loudly, hurling the ball ten feet wide of the boy. Tom scrambled in slow motion around the bench, and the young woman briefly raised her eyes.

Tom ran back to Lucy’s side. ‘She’s reading a book about babies.’

‘What was it called?’

‘Rosemary’s Baby. By a woman called Ira something.’

‘Then she’s definitely a witch.’

‘How do you know?’

Lucy blew a raspberry of impatience. ‘Don’t you know anything? Witches eat babies! Everyone knows that.’

‘So she really is one,’ Tom marvelled. ‘She looks so normal.’

‘Yeah, clever, isn’t it?’ Lucy agreed. ‘So, how are we going to kill her?’

Someone's on a witch hunt
By Maine Colonial
In the churchyard of London's St. Bride's Church, a young woman sits reading until, driven away by the annoyance of two young children, she enters the church's nave. Minutes later, she collapses and dies. The children report that they were playing a game of "witch hunter" and put a curse on her that killed her.

When the autopsy fails to identify a specific cause of death, Arthur Bryant of the Home Office's Peculiar Crimes Unit naturally wants the case. But the Metropolitan Police have jurisdiction and the PCU, being persona non grata in the Home Office, lack the power to take over.

Certainly their enemy-in-chief, the satanic Oscar Kasavian, isn't about to lift a finger to help them. He has vowed to wipe out the PCU and, particularly its beyond-retirement-age leads, Arthur Bryant and John May. Imagine Bryant and May's surprise, then, when Kasavian almost humbly asks them to help him with a problem involving his young wife.

As Bryant and May and the rest of the PCU team begin to investigate, the case takes on ever larger proportions. Government corruption, whistleblowers in private industry, mental illness and its history in London, private clubs, Russian gangsters, codes and ciphers and the supernatural are all thrown into the heady mix. On top of all that, there are disquieting revelations of how the British class system, cronyism and the complete disregard of commercial/government conflicts of interest conspire to ensure that a cabal of venal and ruthless men stay in power in British government.

But this is no grim, deadly serious police procedural. With the PCU, that's just not possible. Arthur Bryant is the absent-minded fellow with his latest meal evidenced down the front of his clothes and his cell phone made unusable by the melted sweets on it. He can't understand why people take exception to his conducting experiments at home and in the office involving things like pig carcasses and explosives. John May is Bryant's opposite: sartorially impeccable, careful to massage egos when necessary and a believer that the simplest answer is usually the right one. Despite their vast differences, Bryant and May make an effective team and, as always, they go right down to the wire in their investigation.

This tenth book in the Peculiar Crimes Unit series is notable for its use of London settings in the story. Descriptions of churches, museums, streets and history bring the city alive. This was a particularly satisfying story, one of my absolute favorites in the series. I laughed aloud several times but, as always with this series, I learned a lot and I was touched by the very human members of the team and the people they deal with.

This book can be read as a standalone, but I would suggest that at the very least, you read the previous book, The Memory of Blood: A Peculiar Crimes Unit Mystery (Peculiar Crimes Unit Mysteries), first. There are certain plot issues that come out of that book and it will make The Invisible Code that much more satisfying to know about them. Best of all, though, would be to read the whole series from the beginning, starting with Full Dark House: A Peculiar Crimes Unit Mystery.

One final mystery, though. The book is out in the UK, but as of September, 2012, there is no publication date listed in the US. However, you can get the audiobook from Audible. That's what I did and I can highly recommend it. The narrator, Tim Goodman, is wonderful. His voice for Arthur Bryant is dead-on perfection.

Serlock Holmes meets Douglas Adams, sort of.
By Graves
In the Invisible code we rejoin the "Peculiar Crimes Unit." A branch on the London police that get the little green man files handed to them, but due to interdepartmental jealousies other branches are cutting them out, starving them on the vine by not transferring cases to them. In particular the case of an otherwise perfectly healthy woman who just dropped dead in a church for no apparent reason, just the sort of thing the unit specializes in.

But when Oskar Kasavian, their arch enemy at the Home office is at his wit's end, he has no choice but to call them in. His wife has never quite fit in with British society and he is afraid she is being black mailed or might be going mad. When she's involved in several unseemly displays in public his fear is it might derail not only his career but various international security protocols he's working on. He's forced to call in the unit he's done his best to shut down to save his wife, his marriage, his career and just maybe the nation.

Detectives May and Bryant have to decide if she really is going mad or is someone really out to get her and if so, why?

This book is fun. It is not a comedy. It is a serious mystery but the two lead detectives, May, the young with better people skills and Bryant, older with amazing deductive powers but with people skills that would make Attila the Hun take notice, have a way of looking at things that seems reminiscent of Douglas Adams slightly off kilter view of things. Such as an interoffice memo at the front of the book detailing off what is going wrong in the office-such as the place is not haunted and British law officers are not required to have any imagination.

In the end it's a good mystery relying on wit and intelligence with just a touch of the sort on inspired madness the British excel at.

Witches, Satanists, unexplained deaths. Peculiar enough for you?
By J. Lesley
I am so glad author Christopher Fowler was willing to take a chance to write mystery novels with a twist. And the twist definitely works for me. The two lead characters, Arthur Bryant and John May, by modern standards should be retired and growing vegetable marrows on an allotment somewhere. Thank goodness Fowler has kept these two older police detectives active and investigating serious crimes. It would be so easy for Bryant and May to fall into the category of caricatures of detectives, but that is never the case. Even though Bryant makes frequent references to his age, that age in no way keeps him from being essential to the investigations in all of these novels. Here, in the tenth book in the series, Bryant even plays the dominant role in working out the solution to the murders.

The Peculiar Crimes Unit doesn't have any big case on it's books at the moment so when Arthur Bryant hears about an unusual death in St. Bride's Church, for which his pathologist friend is having trouble finding a cause of death, he decides to do some investigating on his own. This is soon sidelined when Oskar Kasavian, the official from the Home Office department in charge of the PCU, asks for the help of the unit in investigating what is happening to his wife, Sabira. Kasavian is about to head up the UK's initiative in the EU which will change forever the way terrorism threats are dealt with within the UK and he needs help finding out why his wife is behaving more and more irrationally. Is Sabira really just a young, bored wife of an important government official or is there something tangible causing her paranoia and talk of witches?

This story features Arthur Bryant more than other members of the Unit, but everyone is important to the solving of the case. Talk of witches and Satanists might lead some to think that this is a paranormal or fantasy novel, but that would not be correct. The Peculiar Crimes Unit has to be ready to deal with crimes that lead them into some very odd places but this is most definitely a police procedural mystery novel. Personally, I would have liked more detail on how the crimes were carried out than I got in the revelation, but this series is such a great favorite of mine that I'm willing to let my imagination fill in the blanks on some of the more pedestrian details. This book is definitely a stand alone novel, you don't have to be familiar with any of the other books in the series to enjoy it and become a real fan of the series. If you want to read my favorite so far, that would be The Victoria Vanishes: A Peculiar Crimes Unit Mystery.
