Well-done Romantic Suspense
By Annonymous
Having just finished TtE I must say I'm extremely pleased with this novel. I've read a few of Tenorio's other romantic novels and was a little concerned her first (from what I can see by browsing her website) attempt at romantic suspense would fall flat. Happy day, it didn't. TtE starts with, not quite a bang but close, and doesn't let up. We're quickly dropped into a world where there are three distinct races (Human, Shifter and Sibile) and for once in recent reading history-the shifters are on the minority side of things and are quickly dwindling.
The romance was steadily built and I liked the fact that the hero, Pale, didn't immediately fall in love with the heroine just because he desperately wanted to imprint on her. I really liked the fact that he logically and methodically approached his imprinting of the heroine by outlining all the reasons why he didn't trust her (which were valid-imagine that in romance land!) and weighing them; and yet when he decided to go ahead anyway and imprint her, he didn't later claim to be out of his head with lust/crazed/overly-exited as many of the current paranormal/romantic heroes tend to. I also liked that his character didn't undergo a complete 180 by the end of the novel. Pale is a gruff, no-muss kind of man who is doing his best to ensure the continuation of his species; and even when faced with overwhelming temptation in the form of a half wolf/half Sibile, he still managed to keep himself under control. All without berating the heroine, calling her unnecessary names, or jumping her within minutes of their first meeting. Pale began rough and by the end, you wanted him to remain just that way because his personality was what made him so great.
I enjoyed our heroine, Jade, as well. She was a mature, intelligent lead character who, shockingly, didn't have any TSTL moments which I've found to be extremely rare in most recent books. The hero asks her to stay put, she stays put. She knows what she is and is not capable of handling and with the exception of one instance, she keeps within her limits. She doesn't get hysterical, overly emotional, or stupidly independent. I also liked the fact that she was willing to sacrifice herself for the hero-too often these days we only see the heroes doing the sacrificing and don't get me wrong, I'm all for this, but it's nice to see a female lead who knows her heart and mind and is willing to put someone else's happiness ahead of her own. Jade reminded me (very slightly) of Emma from A Hunger Like No Other (The Immortals After Dark Series, Book 1) where both female characters start out believing they are a weakness, but come into their own quite nicely.
Even though the entire story took place over the span of 3 days, it felt much longer. A lot happens internally with the two main characters and at the end of the book I didn't feel like their HEA was contrived or rushed. The suspense was excellent-usually in romantic novels the romance takes precedence over the plot of the story (or it IS the plot) but in TtE everything was very nicely balanced and all potential loose ends were tied up completely, or in such a way that this novel is completely stand-alone. The author kept the rules of the world she created reasonable, and managed to make them work. She's built a world that I would very much like to see again, perhaps in the form of a story or two for some of the secondary characters she introduced.

Tempting The Enemy
By Fiction Vixen Books and Beauty
There is a serial killer stalking young women and Detective Pale Rysen is assigned to the case. The trail is cold and there are no leads so Jade, who is a Sibile, is brought in to help. The Sibile are a matriarchal order of very powerful and gifted women. This case is personal for Rysen since he is an Alpha werewolf and some of the women who have been killed are shifters. He's not at all thrilled to have a Sibile on the case and the fact that this particular Sibile happens to be half wolf could prove to be a very big problem.
Jade-Scarlet is half wolf and was raised by the Order of the Sibile in a very strict training environment designed to hone her gifts to become a powerful mercenary. Mostly isolated while growing up her knowledge of the outside world is limited to what she has been taught and what she's learned from other Sibiles. When she is sent to help solve the recent murders, she gets a bit more than she bargained for. Apparently she is coming into heat and the physical reaction that results between her and Pale could cause them both to come undone before this mystery is solved.
The werewolf packs have been hunted nearly to extinction forcing them to hide their nature while living among the rest of the world. Pale can't risk exposing his werewolf nature but having Jade working in close quarters makes it difficult to maintain his control. The case they are working on has taken a dangerous turn and the killer they are hunting seems to want them both dead. To make matters worse, since Jade is in heat she is in danger from the brutality of other unmated werewolves.
Tempting the Enemy is a highly charged sensual, romantic suspense. From the the very beginning the sexual and romantic chemistry between Jade and Pale explodes. On the hunt for a killer Pale and Jade must learn to work together despite their differences and undeniable attraction. While there are some very steamy scenes they don't overpower the story. The mystery and romance is nicely balanced.
Pale has a strong protective nature and his wolf recognizes Jade as his mate. Although his instincts compel him to take her, he holds back until he is sure she is ready. He recognizes great power in Jade and wants her to embrace the wolf inside her she has spent a lifetime denying. I found Pale to be a highly desirable hero. His life is dedicated to protecting his pack, especially the females and children. He is sexy, powerful and dominate but never takes it over the top. Control is his greatest asset.
Jade comes into the story a bit insecure about herself, having been shamed for her dual nature. She grows throughout the story, realizing her self-worth and with Pale's guidance learns to accept both parts of her nature. She was never really weak or submissive, always willing to stand up to Pale, but nevertheless, she did grow into her own and was a wonderfully strong heroine. She and Pale butt heads and every turn, however the sense that they are a perfect compliment to the other is always present.
Tempting the Enemy introduces a dangerous world leading the reader through an exciting and suspenseful mystery heavily laced with romance and explosive sexual chemistry. As I read I was kept on edge by the suspenseful murder mystery, never knowing what direction the story may take next. That combined with the sexual tension between Jade and Pale made for a fast paced, exciting read. The paranormal world this story is based in is intriguing and exciting and I hope that Ms. Tenorio has plans to expand on this world with future books.

I Couldn't Put It Down

I read this book until my eyes blurred from exhaustion, and even when I couldn't actually read anymore, I thought about it and counted the minutes until I could return. The characters completely wrapped me up and brought me into their world - a world full of cruelty and love, treachery and trust. A world so like ours but somehow utterly different.
Pale is a wolf shifter hiding in plain sight. Shifters were the victims of genocide that nearly wiped them all out and Pale is part of a movement trying to rebuild them again. But something out there is killing "strays" - shifters who are on the run trying to find sanctuary.
Jade-Scarlet is a Sibile, one of the feared and revered women with psychic powers who hire themselves out as mercenaries. They use their powers to help humans with problems otherwise outside their limitations. She's called in by the powers-that-be to help Pale discover who The Woodsman is - a serial killer who leaves neatly stacked body parts as a calling card, but who is seen by no one.
Pale has a good reason to hate the Sibile, so isn't pleased to be forced into working with one... and then he meets Jade who's Sibile and shifter ... and in heat. He's driven nearly insane by her heat cycle, but is determined to resist for several reasons. One, she's a Sibile, regardless of her shifter genes. Two, he is part of a group of males who refuse to force a wolf in heat to accept them - something that is sadly quite common as the wolves are driven by instinct to rebuild their people. Rape is common, but just as ugly and repugnant to Pale as it should be to any thinking person.
Still... their forced partnership is going to test his determination as it's never been tested before. Worse, as time goes by it's clear that Jade is in mortal danger, and that his need is far more than physical.
Author Dee Tenorio thrusts the reader into this world without explanation or backstory, but a long, onerous explanation isn't needed despite the strange world we're tossed into. As she feeds us description and backstory slowly and skillfully over time, everything we need to know is given to us in small, manageable bites. Her talent was amazing as she so clearly described Pale and Jade, how we got into their minds, their hearts and their pasts. In only a few paragraphs I was hooked and never once did I regret choosing this book to read.
The sexual tension is hot, hot, hot ... but unconsummated for some time. That's not to say there isn't a whole lot of the physical in this book, and a whole lot of steam that's going to make you step back and fan yourself and then jump right back in for more, but every touch, every kiss, every everything is appropriate and just exactly right.
I shivered at the need felt by both Pale and Jade, and then my heart swelled with the emotions they began to feel. I was completely immersed in the story, and I laughed and cried and felt with them, page by page. I can't remember a time when I was so completely invested in a pair of characters, when what they went through mattered so much to me.
They were both so flawed and yet so perfect for each other. Strong when they needed to be, weak when they knew they could be.
I could rave on for days, but I won't. What I will say is this: do yourself a favor and do not miss this book. Even if you're not a huge shifter fan, or you've never liked futuristic books or whatever reason you may think you have for skipping it ... don't. I read a lot of books and I seldom find one that grips me as this one did. Fact is, the moment I'm done with this review, I'm going to pick it up and read it again. And then maybe again. It's just that
