From Publishers Weekly
Sviokla, a recovered drug addict and alcoholic, today runs a successful clinic specializing in treating medical personnel with addiction issues. Here, Sviokla replays his early life, from Harvard College football player to his residency at UCSD's hospital, where he chose surgery as his focus and first began to show addictive symptoms. Shortly thereafter, he suffered an accident that ended his prospects as a surgeon, and a failed business venture led to heavy drinking and using pills. The loss of his medical license sparked a downward spiral into depression and poverty during which Sviokla took a series of low-paying jobs and turned to alcohol to numb the pain and embarrassment. He made half-hearted attempts at recovery, even checking into a psych ward, before finally arriving at a "moment of clarity" that led to true sobriety. Following a battle with bureaucracy in California, Sviokla found the Rhode Island Medical Board more receptive to reinstating his license and decided he "wanted to give something back to the world." The result is his current practice, Medical Assisted Recovery. Sviokla demonstrates bravery in this confessional account of his addiction and recovery.

Riveting Story With Practical Impact
By Dolie
This is an absolutely absorbing read in and of itself. No connection to addiction is required to be caught up in this story of a fall from grace followed by a truely remarkable recovery.
In addition, it serves two important purposes. First, it puts a "face on addiction" which is important to remove the stigma that accompanies this disease which crosses all boundaries. We are facing an epidemic that affects addicts and their families alike: anything that facilitates understanding will help people to access the treatment they need. Secondly it indicates warning signs and gives practical information about how to obtain the help needed.

Courageous, Honest, and Essential
By stoneflyri
Addiction affects at least one in ten individuals and the subsequent devastation of individuals, families, and friends impacts everyone. Nevertheless the tragic consequences of addiction have been continuously misunderstood by the general medical field, insurance carriers, social organizations, and political agencies. The archaic and incorrect view that addiction is a moral choice amenable to punishment is slowly being replaced by a more accurate depiction of addiction as a brain disease warranting empathy and treatment. Dr. Sviolka's book recounts a journey of great courage, honesty, and humility. It truly "puts a face" on both the troubling world of the addict and the "promise" of serenity provided by recovery. This detailed and masterly written chronicle of Dr. Sviolka's tragedies and triumphs should serve as inspiration to all who likewise have suffered from the impact of addiction. and represents an essential breakthrough read for all those seeking a better understanding of addiction, which includes virtually all of us.

from Harvard to Hell
By Old Lady Reader
If you live with or have lived with an addict you can relate to this book. I if you haven't, then give thanks -Daily. To go to Harvard and then Harvard medical school should lead to a life of comfort respect and success. Not always the case. As this Dr found out his life could go as low as his educational highs. The reader will go from surprise to disappointment when seeing how choices in life can lead you far away from the goals you assumed were assured. We often see addicts as homeless street people, but part of those feelings protect us from " being one of those people." You won't feel that way after reading this book.
