Fun, but not entirely educational

We just received this book, and I am excited to try out a few of the ideas with my young children. However, I am a little surprised and disappointed by some of the experiments. The author goes into great detail discussing how to grow a "Mold Plant" from a slice of bread, and how to grow a "Yeast Plant" from baker's yeast. Mold and Yeast are from the Kingdom Fungi, not the Plant Kingdom. Also, it states that Algae is a plant. That is sometimes true, but not always. Some are grouped into the Kingdom Protista instead of the Plant Kingdom (bc they are not multicellular, yet they are still photosynthetic). If you are teaching your child about different kingdoms and scientific classifications this could be very confusing (and misleading)...especially since recent research has actually determined that Fungi are closer genetically to animals than to plants....but I digress.
I believe that many parents purchased this book in hopes of using it as an educational resource. It is even listed in "The Well Trained Mind" as recommended reading for science education. More fact checking needs to go into the next edition!

Informative and full of great ideas!

I love this book. Yes, much of the information can be found online, but I wouldn't have thought to look up some of these things.

If you're already an experienced gardener, this book may be a waste of time, but if you're a beginner and want to get your kids involved, it's great for motivating the 'budding' gardener.

This book is full of ideas for making gardening tools and materials using everyday household objects, like empty milkjugs (you can do many things with those!), muffin tins, 2-liter bottles, egg cartons, etc. There are recipes for natural, homemade bug sprays, pest strips, composting, and more.

I found it informative as well. There are bits of information about butterflies and how to attract them, weeds, worms, pests, helpful plants(what grows well with what) and critters, growing plants from leaf cuttings, tasty recipes using things you've grown, making herbed butter, starting your outdoor garden, growing seedlings indoors, making birdfeeders, gourd rattles, catnip bags, and lots more good stuff...and all using things you have around the house.

A great resource for the beginners and kids who like crafty things.

Simply magical!

Doig's characters are just incredible. His sense of humor is immense. His description of the depression years in Montana is fascinating. And of course, the landscapes inspired by his acquaintance with the countryside depicted in ENGLISH CREEK are breathtaking. This is the best book I have read in ages! I am going to find a way to work it into my American literature course, because it is not only a great book, it's a priceless piece of Americana.

An all-time favorite

I uncovered Doig's "Dancing at the Rascal Fair" at a small bookstore in Oregon many years ago. Since then, his books have earned a "do not loan" status on my bookshelf. I'll tell friends how much I love his books, but they have to buy their own copies. English Creek is one of my favorites. It immersed me in Montana, in a young boy's summer, in the fold of time between childhood and adulthood. While some of Doig's books have a darker, gritty, edge, English Creek made me laugh outloud. I've just ordered three more copies to give as gifts to friends who I know will love the premise, the prose and the portrait of life on the edge of growing up.

Doig writes books as real as life itself

ENGLISH CREEK is about a boy's awakening into maturity. It's the summer of his 15th birthday and Jick McCaskill experiences new awareness -- of his history as well as of his relationships with and among family and friends. His sense of security is threatened when his older brother defies their parents to take up with a local beauty and become a cowboy instead of going to college. Jick is challenged by unexpected changes in new grown-up ways and as he meets those challenges he sees himself and his world through a dying innocence.
To say Doig's prose is rich and powerful is like describing a tornado as breezy. A master of the English language, story-teller par excellence and character builder supreme, funny, intelligent, witty, sad is to understate. Superlatives fall short of accuracy. Ivan Doig's books are as real as life itself. To contemplate his words is to rethink reality and to embrace new insights.

Nonlinear Optimization Applications Using the GAMS Technology develops a wide spectrum of nonlinear optimization applications expressed in the GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System) language. The book is highly self-contained and is designed to present applications in a general form that can be easily understood and quickly updated or modified to represent situations from the real world.  The book emphasizes the local solutions of the large-scale, complex, continuous nonlinear optimization applications, and the abundant  examples in GAMS are highlighted by those involving ODEs, PDEs, and optimal control. The collection of these examples will be useful for software developers and testers.

Chapter one presents aspects concerning the mathematical modeling process in the context of mathematical modeling technologies based on algebraic-oriented modeling languages. The GAMS technology is introduced in Chapter 2, mainly as a system for formulating and solving a large variety of general optimization models. The bulk of the 82 nonlinear optimization applications is given in Chapter 3.

This book  is primarily intended to serve as a reference for graduate students and for scientists working in various disciplines of industry/mathematical programming that use optimization methods to model and solve problems.  It is also well suited as supplementary material for seminars in optimization, operations research, and decision making, to name a few.

This picks up where What We Saw at Night (2013) left off, with 16-year-old Allie and her boyfriend, Rob, still suffering. It is not just their xeroderma pigmentosum, a severe allergy to the sun, this time; they have also lost their best friend, Juliet. Although Juliet’s death was apparently a suicide, Allie knows that’s not the whole story and is sure Juliet’s abuser, Garrett Tabor, is in some way responsible. As in the previous book, this is more action and plot than a logical story. As Tabor’s involvement in several sadistic events becomes obvious, Allie becomes evermore determined to take him down. That she insists on doing it herself—even though she says several times she knows she should confide her suspicions to her strong mother, Juliet’s father (the police chief), or her online criminal justice professor—makes her insistence merely seem like a plot point. The story turns grisly and is never completely satisfying, but the nighttime action, including deepwater diving, will attract readers, while Allie’s relationship with Rob provides some tender moments. AKA, The Sun is bad, so is this series.

Summary of Book 1 and Book 2: Allie Kim was born with XP, a disease for which exposure to the sun is or can be deadly. The community houses one of the few XP clinics in the world. Therefore, there is a higher than average population with XP. She is good friends with two fellow XPers, Juliette and Rob. Rob and Allie end up hooking up, but poor Juliette apparently runs away and commits suicide. Allie strongly suspects that her coach, Garrett Tabor has killed her. He has been raping Juliette since she was 14.

The stupidity in these books just slays me. Allie, who will be studying forensics/law enforcement in college is the worse at law enforcement ever. Would like examples of stupidity?
1. Allie and the gang at the beginning of book 1 are jumping off a building. Allie sees a guy killing/ already killed a dead girl. Does she call 911? NO. No one else saw it, and they really don't want to get in trouble for jumping off the building. To add insult to injury, we later find out that they youtube their exploits. Now, why didn't you call the police?
2. Allie was out with a daytime friend. Allie sees her killer with Juliette. Later, her friend is killed. Still, she doesn't tell the police.
3. Juliette confesses that Garrett Tabor has been raping her since she was 14. Allie can't tell, because it was a secret. Two people dead and teen rape, the secret for your friend is the obvious choice, NOT.
4. Allie dives into the cold lake for another stunt with Rob. She sees a garden of dead girls in an underwater cave (clear rip-off of Cabin by the Lake). The stunt goes awry, so their trainer calls Garrett. Allie had brought back one of the girls' necklaces, and Garrett sees it and knows she has been to the garden of dead girls. Does she tell the emergency personnel? No, she doesn't. She waits to go back and get evidence of the dead girls, photographic evidence. Are you surprised he moved the bodies?
5. Allie is getting threatening texts and pictures from Garrett, who is obviously using a burn phone. Does she go to the police and warn her mom? NO, she still doesn't have proof they are from Garrett.
As I said, the Allie is dumb.

I also could not find anything likeable about Allie. She lets her mom know that it would be better for her mom to allow her to die than to risk her own life saving her because she has XP. Allie admits she says it on purpose to upset her mom, but it is true. She thinks her friends, Juliette and Rob are in cahoots, so she purposefully avoids them all summer. She is very self-centered. I just did not like her.

I don't recommend this book for many reasons... but it would be a bigger spoiler to explain.

I certainly recommend it.

Being a writer, I was curious about the advanced unedited version of this book. Unfortunately, I ended up editing as I read. There were a lot of hanging sentences and misplaced punctuation along with some misspelled words and typos. But the story is unusual and very interesting. My ethics do not include sexual relationships between kids who are still living with their parents. So this story, as a YA presentation, doesn't seem to fit the genre.As a cozy mystery, I certainly recommend it.

I tore pages I read this so fast

The young adult genre has been lacking a convincing lead character for years. Don't come to me with complaints about Katniss or whatever that Divergent girl's name is, because they are shallow compared to Jacquelyn Mitchard's superlative heroine, Allie Kim.

She is a headstrong girl undefined by even her own standards, young enough to know she has no idea what she wants. She's lost a best friend to a sadistic, mirage-like nurse but is in the throes of passion with the love of her life. She struggles throughout the novel to reconcile these two things, these extremes of emotion as danger (in the form of untraceable intimidation from said nurse) closes in.

I tore pages as I turned them. I didn't want to get through this book, I needed to. The suspense practically pulls the paper for you. The moral, ethical, and emotional complexity of the characters has made me reflect on myself as a person more than any other book has. There aren't cliched speeches about lost love or finding yourself. There are cold hard truths that slide down your throat like cough medicine; terrible, but necessary.

That's the key to What We Lost in the Dark: its realism. Set amongst actual backdrops tinted with just the right amount of fiction, the story feels organic and unavoidable. It grows and withers like a plant unattended then given too much attention. Look too closely and you might miss the minutiae Mitchard is so well-regarded for.

In short: buy this book. Read it. Love it.
