About the Author

J. Michael Martinez began his career in the private practice of law. He later earned a Ph.D. in political science and a second Ph.D. in public administration. Martinez’s scholarly work has appeared in numerous academic publications, including Administration & Society; The American Review of Public Administration; The Georgia Historical Quarterly; The Journal of Environment & Development; The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy; The Journal of Policy History; Nonprofit Management & Leadership; Politics & Policy; and The South Dakota Law Review, among others. He also has co-edited and contributed chapters to three academic texts: Ethics and Character: The Pursuit of Democratic Virtues (Carolina Academic Press, 1998); Confederate Symbols in the Contemporary South (University Press of Florida, 2000); and The Leviathan’s Choice: Capital Punishment in the Twenty-first Century (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002). He has written three books on Southern history: Life and Death in Civil War Prisons (Rutledge Hill Press, 2004), a selection of the History Book Club; Carpetbaggers, Cavalry, and the Ku Klux Klan: Exposing the Invisible Empire During Reconstruction ( Rowman & Littlefield, 2007); and Coming for to Carry Me Home: Race in America from Abolitionism to Jim Crow (Rowman & Littlefield, 2012). His other books include Administrative Ethics in the Twenty-first Century (with William D. Since 1992, Martinez has worked in the Government Affairs & Environment Department at Dart Container Corporation, a leading manufacturer of disposable foodservice products. During the 1990s, he taught political science at Georgia State University and environmental law at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. He now teaches political science, criminal justice, and public administration courses as a part-time faculty member at Kennesaw State University, the University of South Dakota, and the University of Georgia, respectively. From 1988 until 1992, he was on the staff of the Southern States Energy Board, a non-profit interstate compact organization that researches energy and environmental laws and regulations

About the Author

Frank Voehl serves as the director of process improvement for Nova Southeastern University, as chairman and president of Strategy Associates, Inc., and as a senior consultant and chancellor for the Harrington Institute. He is also chairman of the board for a number of businesses and is a Grand Master Black Belt instructor and technology advisor at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He is recognized as one of the world leaders in applying quality measurement and Lean Six Sigma methodologies to business processes.

Voehl has extensive knowledge of NRC, FDA, GMP, and NASA quality system requirements. He is an expert in ISO 9000, QS 9000/14000/18000, and integrated Lean Six Sigma quality system standards and processes. He has degrees from St. John’s University and advanced studies at New York University, as well as an honorary doctor of divinity degree. Since 1986, he has been responsible for overseeing the implementation of quality management systems with organizations in such diverse industries as telecommunications and utilities, federal, state, and local government agencies, public administration and safety, pharmaceuticals, insurance/banking, manufacturing, and institutes of higher learning. In 2002, he joined the Harrington Group as the chief operating officer and executive vice president. He has held executive management positions with Florida Power and Light and FPL Group, where he was the founding general manager and COO of QualTec Quality Services for seven years. He has written and published/co-published over 35 books and hundreds of technical papers on business management, quality improvement, change management, knowledge management, logistics, and team building, and has received numerous awards for community leadership, service to the third world countries, and student mentoring.

The Bahamas National Quality Award was developed in 1991 by Voehl to recognize the many contributions of companies in the Caribbean region, and he is an honorary member of its Board of Judges. In 1980, the city of Yonkers, New York, declared March 7 Frank Voehl Day, honoring him for his many contributions on behalf of thousands of youth in the city where he lived, performed volunteer work, and served as athletic director and coach of the Yonkers-Pelton Basketball Association. In 1985 he was named Father of the Year in Broward County, Florida. He also serves as president of the Miami Archdiocesan Council of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, whose mission is to serve the poor and needy throughout South Florida and the world.

Frank’s contributions to quality improvement around the world have brought him many honors and awards, including ASQ’s Distinguished Service Medal, the Caribbean Center for Excellence Founders Award, the Community Quality Distinguished Service Award, the Czech Republic Outstanding Service Award on behalf of its business community leaders, FPL’s Pioneer Lead Facilitator Award, the Florida SFMA Partners in Productivity Award, and many others. He was appointed the honorary advisor to the Bahamas Quality Control Association, and he was elected to the Eastern Europe Quality Hall of Fame. He was also named honorary director of the Association Venezuela de Control de Calidad by Banco Consolidado.

Dr. H. James Harrington:
In the book Tech Trending, Dr. Harrington was referred to as "the quintessential tech trender." The New York Times noted his "knack for synthesis and an open mind about packaging his knowledge and experience in new ways―characteristics that may matter more as prerequisites for new economy success than technical wizardry." The author Tom Peters stated, "I fervently hope that Harrington’s readers will not only benefit from the thoroughness of his effort but will also ‘smell’ the fundamental nature of the challenge for change that he mounts." William Clinton, past president of the United States, appointed Dr. Harrington to serve as an Ambassador of Good Will. It has been said about him, "He writes the books that other consultants use."

Harrington Institute was featured on a half-hour TV program, Heartbeat of America, which focuses on outstanding small businesses that make America strong. The host, William Shatner, stated: "You [Dr. Harrington] manage an entrepreneurial company that moves America forward. You are obviously successful."

Harrington serves as the chief executive officer for the Harrington Institute and Harrington Middle East. He is also chairman of the board for a number of businesses. Dr. Harrington is recognized as one of the world leaders in applying performance improvement methodologies to business processes. He has an excellent record of coming into an organization, working as its CEO or COO, resulting in a major improvement in its financial and quality performance.

In February 2002 Dr. Harrington retired as the COO of Systemcorp A.L.G., the leading supplier of knowledge management and project management software solutions, when Systemcorp was purchased by IBM. Prior to this, he served as a principal and one of the leaders in the Process Innovation Group at Ernst & Young; he retired from Ernst & Young when it was purchased by Cap Gemini. Dr. Harrington joined Ernst & Young when Ernst & Young purchased Harrington, Hurd & Rieker, a consulting firm that Dr. Harrington started. Before that Dr. Harrington was with IBM for over 40 years as a senior engineer and project manager.

Dr. Harrington is past chairman and past president of the prestigious International Academy for Quality and of the American Society for Quality Control. He is also an active member of the Global Knowledge Economics Council.

Harrington was elected to the honorary level of the International Academy for Quality, which is the highest level of recognition in the quality profession. Harrington is a government-registered quality engineer, a Certified Quality and Reliability Engineer by the American Society for Quality Control, and a Permanent Certified Professional Manager by the Institute of Certified Professional Managers. He is a certified Master Six Sigma Black Belt and received the title of Six Sigma Grand Master. He has an MBA and PhD in engineering management and a BS in electrical engineering.

Dr. Harrington’s contributions to performance improvement around the world have brought him many honors. He was appointed the honorary advisor to the China Quality Control Association, and was elected to the Singapore Productivity Hall of Fame in 1990. He has been named lifetime honorary president of the Asia-Pacific Quality Control Organization and honorary director of the Association Chilean de Control de Calidad. In 2006 Dr. Harrington accepted the honorary chairman position of Quality Technology Park of Iran.

Harrington has been elected a fellow of the British Quality Control Organization and the American Society for Quality Control. In 2008 he was elected to be an honorary fellow of the Iran Quality Association and Azerbaijan Quality Association. He was also elected an honorary member of the quality societies in Taiwan, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Singapore. He is also listed in the "Who’sWho Worldwide" and "Men of Distinction Worldwide." He has presented hundreds of papers on performance improvement and organizational management structure at the local, state, national, and international levels.

Recognition:

The Harrington/Ishikawa Medal, presented yearly by the Asian Pacific Quality Organization, was named after H. James Harrington to recognize his many contributions to the region.

Harrington has received many awards, among them the Benjamin L. Lubelsky Award, the John Delbert Award, the Administrative Applications Division Silver Anniversary Award, and the Inspection Division Gold Medal Award. In 1996, he received the ASQC’s Lancaster Award in recognition of his international activities. In 2001 he received the Magnolia Award in recognition for the many contributions he has made in improving quality in China. In 2002 Harrington was selected by the European Literati Club to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Literati Award for Excellence ceremony in London. The award was given to honor his excellent literature contributions to the advancement of quality and organizational performance. Also, in 2002 Harrington was awarded the International Academy of Quality President’s Award in recognition for outstanding global leadership in quality and competitiveness, and contributions to IAQ as Nominations Committee chair, vice president, and chairman. In 2003 Harrington received the Edwards Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ). The Edwards Medal is presented to the individual who has demonstrated the most outstanding leadership in the application of modern quality control methods, especially through the organization and administration of such work.

In 2004 he received the Distinguished Service Award, which is ASQ’s highest award for service granted by the society. In 2008 Dr. Harrington was awarded the Sheikh Khalifa Excellence Award (UAE) in recognition of his superior performance as an original Quality and Excellence Guru who helped shape modern quality thinking. In 2009 Harrington was selected as the Professional of the Year. Also in 2009 he received the Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University Medal. In 2010 the Asian Pacific Quality Association (APQO) awarded Harrington the APQO President’s Award for his "exemplary leadership." The Australian Organization of Quality NSW’s Board recognized Harrington as "the Global Leader in Performance Improvement Initiatives" in 2010. In 2011 he was honored to receive the Shanghai Magnolia Special Contributions Award from the Shanghai Association for Quality in recognition of his 25 years of contributing to the advancement of quality in China. This was the first time that this award was given out. In 2012 Harrington received the ASQ Ishikawa Medal for his many contributions in promoting the understanding of process improvement and employee involvement on the human aspects of quality at the local, national, and international levels. Also in 2012 he was awarded the Jack Grayson Award. This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the application of quality philosophy, methods and tools in education, health care, public service, and not-for-profit organizations. Harrington also received the A.C. Rosander Award in 2012. This is ASQ Service Quality Division’s highest honor. It is given in recognition of outstanding long-term service and leadership resulting in substantial progress toward the fulfillment of the division’s programs and goals. Additionally, in 2012 Harrington was honored by the Asia Pacific Quality Organization by being awarded the Armand V. Feigenbaum Lifetime Achievement Medal. This award is given annually to an individual whose relentless pursuit of performance improvement over a minimum of 25 years has distinguished himself or herself for the candidate’s work in promoting the use of quality methodologies and principles within and outside of the organization he or she is part of.

Charles "Chuck" Mignosa has over 30 years of diversified experience in high technology, biomedical devices, telecommunications, and food processing industries and 25 years of experience in IBM holding patents in solid lubricants. He was a second-level manager in charge of implementing quality systems in five manufacturing areas. He is a certified course developer and has developed courses including Total Quality Management, Continuous Flow Manufacturing, Customer-Driven Quality, Statistical Design and Analysis of Experiments, Team Building, Six Sigma, Conflict Resolution, and Communication Skills. After leaving IBM he worked as an independent consultant doing all of the TQM training for Spectrian telecommunications and facilitating its conversion from a DOD to public sector company and attaining its ISO registration.

Mignosa has consulted for and done training with such companies as Siemens Automotive, General Mills, Gatorade, Zea Corporation, Connors Peripherals, HP, IBM, ADAC Labs, Cholestech, Heinz USA, and many more. He has held positions as director of quality for P-com, a telecommunication company, and Cholestech Corporation, a medical device company. Mignosa is currently president of Business Systems Architects (BSA), a Silicon Valley consulting, training, and documentation company specializing in the design and implementation of business and quality management systems and, with Upward Performance, of which he is also president, implementing Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing programs. In addition to a BS in chemistry, Mr. Mignosa has graduate degrees in statistics, systems research, and management training with IBM and is a senior member of ASQ.

Rich Charron is the founder and president of the Lean Manufacturing Group, Inc., a South Florida company that provides a number of "handson" employee learning and Lean implementation programs focused on waste elimination, productivity improvement, and profitability enhancement. He is a Certified Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma Excellence from the Harrington Institute. He has trained and coached over 100 teams in Lean Manufacturing, Lean Six Sigma, and Kaizen events, generating savings over $25 million. In conjunction with Strategy Associates he completed a three-part DVD series on Lean concepts for the University of Central Florida. His expertise is in process performance excellence, Lean Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, design for manufacturability, problem solving, product and process failure analysis, products development, and performance testing.

Mr. Charron holds BS and MS degrees in plastics engineering from the University of Massachusetts. His MS thesis, "Product Liability in the Plastics Industry," is a survey of our legal system and the impacts of unsafe products and legal uncertainties. He is the author of over a dozen technical publications on product quality, products performance testing, and products failure analysis.

A wonderful addition to the science of Lean Six Sigma

This is an outstanding book and a significant addition to the literature in the science of "quality." I have spent the past 35 years managing software and hardware teams in the computer industry and wish such a book had been available many years ago. The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook is much more than a guide to eliminating defects, improving quality, increasing speed, and eliminating cost. It is a concise, yet complete, reference guide to all aspects of Lean Six Sigma. Chapter by chapter it builds a foundation that the reader can absorb a piece at a time. It bridges theory with practical application and provides an inordinate amount of detail in describing and defining the enormous, and sometimes daunting, number of concepts, tools, and processes. A glance thru the table of context can be a bit intimidating but actually acts as a reference guide to those who have some familiarity with Six Sigma and Lean but wish to go deeper or brush up on some detail or nuance during an actual project or simply gaining more knowledge about the subject. I personally enjoyed the many references and linkages to the heritage of the field of quality that I first became familiar with so many years ago...such as TQM and the Toyota Production System. How far we have come. This book certainly "stands on the shoulders of giants!"

A new “Reference Benchmark” for the Lean Six Sigma Community

The subtitle of this handbook says is all, “Tools and Methods for Process Acceleration”. This book is a rare treat in the highly competitive industry that tries to meet the needs of the Six Sigma Lean Community. I have read many a book devoted to different aspects of Six Sigma, Lean, Statistics, and Business Process/Performance Improvement, but none can compare to the breadth and depth covered in this new book.

The LSSBB Handbook provides both a comprehensive listing of all the tools utilized by the Lean Six Sigma Community as well as ways to apply and integrate these into cohesive solutions for various industries. The book presents the tools, shows how they fit into a systematic approach to Business Process/Performance Improvement, and also serves as a tremendous textbook that can be used to teach these in an integrated manner. The integration goes further by utilizing examples as the tools and methods are explained and then at the end of each chapter provides the professor and the student with Exercises to further practice these applications.

I highly recommend this book to any other professor at the College or University level who is planning to teach this course. It is extremely well laid out and will make your time spent more efficient and effective.

Not helpful for the Six Sigma Black Belt exam

I bought this book hoping to use it as a reference for my upcoming Six Sigma Black Belt exam. The index is ridiculously poor for a book with almost 600 pages. For example, if you look for Control Chart, it's not in the index. OK, how about Statistical Process Control? Nope. Maybe SPC you say? Nada. How on earth you write 600 pages of Six Sigma material, but don't put these terms in the index, makes no sense at all. I'm returning this one!

About the Author
Shirin Dubbin is often called a "chic geek," and she likes the sound of it. Especially since she's a closet wallflower (albeit one with a super-heroine styled alter ego). I'm a big fan of Urban Fantasy, a genre which --for the most part-- features some combination of vampires, shapeshifters, werewolves, witches and/or Fae. It's an unusual author that finds a new otherworldly focus. And even more unusual: to make it work.

"Dreams' Dark Kiss" follows the world of dream guardians. Our heroine, Ciaran, has been ferrying souls through the Dreamscape to the Other Side, ever since she was a child. But suddenly, she finds herself in the unfamiliar and desolate Wastelands --an in-between place inside the Dreaming. She is attacked by a beast and nearly raped, but she calls out to others of her kind for help. In doing so, she summons the man who will be her mate, a dream guardian named Keoni. Through him, Ciaran learns that she is more powerful in the dream world than she knew.

Of course, the story has to have a villain. The one here is trying to bring the stuff of nightmares into the waking world. Oh, and he wants to make Ciaran his broodmare to help with his cause. Ciaran must work with Keoni to discover why she is so special and to foil the bad guy's evil plan.

There's a reason so many authors go the vampire and werewolf route: people already understand the fundamentals of the mythology. As refreshing as a new story is, understanding the world building is a serious endeavor. I didn't always follow the what was happening in the dreamworld. The glossary of terms at the end was helpful. But I think, by the time I got to the end, I understood what was going on. And after reading this, I believe a sequel would be much easier for me to jump into.

About the Author
Steve Solomon has been writing Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades since 1979. The book has evolved and grown as the author has researched, practiced, and refined the methods of organic gardening. He has homesteaded in Oregon because he believed in living self-sufficiently; he founded the Territorial Seed Company; in 2001 he moved to Tasmania, where he gardens a quarter-acre vegetable plot.

Territorial Seed Company was beginning to flourish and Marina McShane joined the crew at the Territorial Seed Company in 1981 working in the seed room and helping Steve Solomon in the trial grounds. It was an intensive immersion into the philosophy and practices of the organic gardening of vegetables. Thirty years later, Marina lives outside Eugene, OR, where she gardens in an acre of deer fenced botanical wonderland, including about 1,200 square feet of vegetable garden.

This book is written primarily for a Cascadian audience, i.e., folks living in the Northern Maritime climate of Western Washington or Oregon (very similar to the climate in much of Britain). If you're gardening there, this book is tailor-made perfect for you! However, even if you don't live there most of its content will be useful and applicable. I live in a dry Northern Idaho climate and still reference this book often. Steve Solomon has decades of gardening experience and research to learn from, and ALL of his books are worth reading, especially his more recent books. "Gardening When it Counts" is also a very good book.

This is my food growing bible. I was like Carl (when you read the book you will understand what it means to be like Carl). Now I can grow almost year round. I understand my soil, my plants, my microclimate. Not a dry book. It has information you wont find elsewhere. I highly recommend it. It will change you.

Solomon speaks well to his PNW audience.

A great and purposeful guide to vegetable gardening here in the PNW. Solomon writes confidently with plenty of experience to support his advice on the how to grow it successfully all you PNW gardeners! His anecdotal sharing and sense of humor are found throughout the text which aid the discerning gardener in smartly approaching their vegetable production in a sustainable, biological way. Frankly, after a series of hugely successful seasons relying upon Solomon's advice and Territorial Seed products, we truly enjoy the bounty of highly nutritious vegetables as a result. Well recommended.

About the Author
Phillip Thompson grew up near the East Mississippi town of Columbus,birthplace of Tennessee Williams. He received a bachelor's degree injournalism from Ole Miss before serving in the Marine Corps for 12years. As a Marine, he served in California and Hawaii, aboard the USSMissouri, and in combat during the Persian Gulf War with the 1st MarineDivision. He also spent the better part of two years traversing theisland nations of the South Pacific as the lead planner for the 50thAnniversary of World War II in the Pacific.

Since leaving theservice, he has worked as a reporter and editor at newspapers inMississippi and Virginia, and his journalistic work has been featured in newspapers across the Deep South and the East Coast. He wrote as afreelancer for Civil War magazine and The Washington Times and worked as a staff cartoonist for 10 years at Marine Corps Times. He has alsoworked as a defense analyst; media spokesman; consultant; speechwriterand Senate aide.

Thompson is the author of three novels, "EnemyWithin," "A Simple Murder" and "Deep Blood." His short fiction hasappeared in "O-Dark-Thirty," the literary journal of the VeteransWriting Project; The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature; Out of the Gutter Online; Thrills, Kills 'N' Chaos; Near to the Knuckle and TheShamus Sampler II. He attended the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference as afiction writer in 2003.

He also authored the non-fiction account of his Gulf War experience "Into the Storm: A U.S. Marine in the Persian Gulf War."

Couldn't put this crime thriller down

Colt is ... complicated. Once a promising high school football player, then decorated Marine, Colt's the sheriff in Lowndes County, Miss. His father's a drunk, his marriage is on the rocks and his girlfriend is just this side of the stripper pole. And in a town where race still divides everything, Colt hired an oversize black deputy - another former jarhead - to watch his back. Good thing, because Colt needs the help.

Told in alternating points of view from chapter to chapter, this intricate tale kept me turning pages throughout the flight from DC to Denver. I can't remember the last time that I read a book in one sitting. For all his flaws - not the least of which are his toxic relationships with his father and his not-quite ex-wife - Sheriff Colt Harper is worth getting to know.

I have been friends with the author, Phillip Thompson, for more years than either of us care to admit. As his three previous books show, Phillip can tell a story that pulls you into another place and time. Deep Blood is equally engaging.

southern-fried noir

Deep Blood is Phillip Thompson's third novel. If his other two are anywhere near as good as this, I'll have to add both to my list.

Thompson, a Marine who served in the First Gulf War, was born and raised in a small town in Mississippi, and in Deep Blood he returns to those roots. Deep Blood's protagonist is Sam "Colt" Harper, a newly-elected sheriff in Lowndes County, Mississippi. Colt was also a Marine, fought in Iraq and as sheriff he brought one of his Marine buddies in as deputy. Oh, and Colt's dad is the town's drunk.

The story essentially starts with Colt finding a body in the local reservoir, that of Clifford Raines, a black teenager. Figuring out who killed the boy is part of the story, as well as sorting out his personal life and family history. Deep Blood is "southern-fried noir." It has that dark edge, with characters who most definitely aren't saints, dealing with tough hands dealt them by life as best they can.

I have to say that Thompson takes a dark view of race relationships, and his character's language runs from salty to crude. But then this is noir, not Disney, so one should expect that. Having warned the sensitive reader, I have to say that I found Deep Blood a gripping read, and well worth the effort. There's a saying in vaudeville to "always leave your audience wanting more." Deep Blood is a short novel, and so I wanted more, but in a good way.

In short, for fans of hard-boiled crime novels, Deep Blood is a great read. Highly recommended.

Phillip Thompson is a Great Southern Writer

I first got hooked on Phillip Thompson through his Wade Stuart series of straight-ahead thrillers featuring the good-old-boy cashiered ATF agent solving crimes. Deep Blood is less about solving crimes and more about solving people and the complicated relationships that connect them. And while Deep Blood is less up my personal reading alley than the Wade Stuarts, it is a decidedly more ambitious novel. The layers are richer, the morality grayer, and the timeline far longer and loopier. In making this transition, Thompson gets these new pieces right. Reading this book is a sometimes-uncomfortable dusty-lane outing of flawed characters, families and friends, and bad situations, and I enjoyed the whole trip. This goes on the bookshelf between Frank Bill, another master of the brutal rural boil, and John Grisham, who has examined racial relations in the South with a similarly sharp eye.
I am willfully not giving it five stars, because I can’t give it that same rating I give his Wade Stuart novels, but, with Deep Blood, Phillip Thompson has given us an absorbing read of the kind that provokes thought and discussion.
