Dr. Gerald Ashenden, "Ireland's justly famous thoracic surgeon," is lucky to escape with only a broken shoulder after being trampled by his gray stallion, Thor, ridden by his pregnant granddaughter, Rowena Keegan, in this nominal cozy marred by clumsy, overheated dialogue ("That murderous attack on Gerald! Oh, no, Inspector! I did nothing of the kind!"), short, choppy chapters (81 in all) and improbable detail (a "glass-fronted" police station). Rowena's plucky American friend, language expert Torrey Tunet, is sure Rowena didn't run down her grandfather deliberately. But when someone shoots Thor with the tip of a knitting needle, causing the horse to throw Ashenden to his death, Torrey has her work cut out to prove Rowena's innocence. In her hunt for the real murderer, Torrey discovers that the doctor had a few skeletons in the closet: a blackmailing grandson, a jilted Danish girlfriend and a plot to induce abortion through an overdose of X-rays. Will Rowena get an abortion? Who's the father? Could it be a case of incest? Such questions as these generate some tension and suspense, but Deere, author of one previous mystery (The Irish Cottage Murder), has yet to learn how to convinceAat the climax, the police gather a bunch of suspects together and question them as a group. The revelation that the killer used a child's popgun to shoot Thor with the knitting needle is the final absurdity, while the reason Thor attacked his master remains a mystery. (Aug.)

Solid mystery, but lacks cozy feel

This is the book for you if you like mysteries and you're looking for a diversion. Torrey Tunet is back in Ireland working on a series of children's books, but gets distracted as she tries to help her friend who is accused of murdering her grandfather. While the plot is interesting, there is no cozy feel to this book. Torrie's character is rather one-dimensional and unappealing. There are no really likable characters in the book to inspire the reader to want to continue this series. However, as a mystery, it held my interest. If that's what you're looking for, you'll like this book.

An American in Ireland--with murder going on

Torrey Tunet has retreated to a small Irish village to work on her writing. When her best friend Rowena is accused of murdering Rowena's grandfather, Torrey knows she's got to do more than write. Certainly the police aren't going to solve the crime--they have their suspect.
Dicey Deere does an excellent job providing motives, characters, and a convincing Irish village atmosphere. Better yet, she hooks the reader and keeps him/her coming for more with plot twists. Just when you think you have the big picture, Deere changes things up and you realize there is even more going on here.

A fun cozy.

This book is a perfect rainy-day distraction with all kinds of red herrings and false leads. I have to say to me it didn't feel like being in Ireland except superficially, but it was fun nevertheless. I did have a problem with the author's strange ideas regarding anatomy, however. Very early in the book a horse is killed by a small length if knitting needle inserted into its thigh. Not a poisoned knitting needle, mind you. HOW exactly was that supposed to kill the horse? I mean, I can see where that would make the horse throw its rider and jump around a bit, but kill it? Ah, no.

A Nail-Biter and a Real Page Turner!

In this third novel in the Marshall "Mars" Bahr series, author K.J. Erickson has delivered a terrific plot, engaging characters, and a nail-biter finish that comes out of left field. Mars is in his final days as the lead detective assigned to a special unit created by the previous police chief. Because of a regime change in the department, Mars and his intelligent assistant Nettie are happy to be moving to the Cold Case Unit at the State's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. But one last murder intervenes.

The wife of flashy basketball star, Tayron "T-Jack" Jackman has been viciously murdered in her home. Mars intuitively knows that Jackman must be responsible for Terri DuCain Jackman's death. He very quickly learns that T-Jack was obsessively controlling and brutal toward his wife, beating her regularly. Unfortunately, at the time of the murder, the cocky ball player was with Terri's wealthy parents wrapping up a one hundred million dollar deal in which he would divorce Terri and walk away. Not only does he get the hundred mil, but upon his wife's death, he also gets the five-year-old daughter whom he doesn't ever plan to let Terri's stricken parents see.

Everyone involved in the investigation believes Jackman arranged to kill his wife, but proving it is another matter. It doesn't help that the new chief of police is a nincompoop or that Mars is soon struggling with departmental politics of the worse kind. Dead bodies start surfacing, and simultaneously, issues with Mars' ex-wife and son, Chris, crop up and cause a very harried Mars to sweat the impending deadline to close the case.

With Erickson's dynamite cast of characters and an engrossing plot that won't quit, this book is a real page-turner. Erickson has herself a wonderful new franchise that could go on a long time in much the same way that John Sandford's Lucas Davenport series has. (...)

Another great contribution from Erickson

A real page turner, this is Erickson's third novel about Mars Bahr. And it is good.

Terri Jackman, the wife of superstar basketball player "T-Jack" Jackman has been murdered and Mars and his team know Jackman is responsible for her death. Unfortunately, he has an air tight alibi, being with Terri's parents ironing out a $100 million dollar settlement: the price for his agreement to their divorce. Jackman is almost too despicable a villain and the frustration Mars and his team feel when they realize that he is going to get away with her murder is palpable.

As in the previous books of this series, Mars relationship with his young son, Chris, is delightful although in this one there is a looming separation between them with Denise, his ex-wife, planning to move to another state and take Chris with her. She is also intending to marry her live-in, Carl, who is far from an ideal candidate for good stepfather. This anxiety adds to Mars stress as he is taken off the Jackman case.

Ultimately, he solves the case with a stunning conclusion. Fast-paced and suspenseful, the story draws one along like a speeding train with surprising twists and revelations as it nears the conclusion. It was hard to put the book down as it wound towards the end.

I found out about this author by seeing one of his books alone on a park bench. I have now read three of his. Definitely a good read and it is nice to read a book that takes place in my neck of the woods.

Festive Holiday Season Sampler

Not everyone loves anthologies. When it comes to seasonal tales (ie. Christmas, Solstice, Halloween) an anthology makes a nice forum for authors to dabble in a holiday event without bogging down an entire novel. Winter Wishes brings together three previously unknown to me authors with paranormal romance offerings set either around Christmas or in wintery climates. While all three are available in this one volume they are also available for individual purchase.

[TANGLED TINSEL by Vivian Arend] Opening the anthology, Arend's Tangled Tinsel brings together two sexy cat shifters for a holiday season filled with investigation and copulation. As a reader I don't care for stories that jump straight into sexual situations within the first few pages, especially when the characters don't know one another. That started me off on the wrong foot with this one. Unfortunately nothing went on to redeem it. A pretty convoluted plot, cookie-cutter characters, a jumpy pace and too much sex (yes, there may actually be such a thing) had me skimming for dialog to bring the story back. If you're looking for cat shifters having a lot of sex with a mention of the season being Christmas and New Years this one is for you. 1/5 stars

[NO ANGEL by Vivi Andrews] When Sasha's boyfriend, Jay, gets sucked into Hell on Christmas Eve she's charged with going after him. But has she been sent to kill him or redeem him? Can their relationship survive both the trials Hell has to offer and the truth about their bloodlines? Not only was this a great Christmasy themed offering, it was a darned good bit of world building using angels and demons. I was so impressed I was only a couple of chapters in before I went and started adding Andrews' other titles to my wishlist. 5/5 stars

[FREEZE LINE by Moira Rogers] Shane Sullivan is a werewolf just trying to survive in solitude above the freeze line. When he finds Nadia, a witch dying because there's no magic to connect to so far north, he does the only humane thing and tries to help her. As the two fight their way south to get Nadia to safety both feel the changes their respective kind has to the magic in the earth. But could there be another magic brewing, a magic between them? This one wasn't bad. But it wasn't great either. As with most short stories it's tough to fit in enough world building to make it work. I liked the characters and enjoyed their chemistry but I felt like I didn't know enough about their world to really enjoy it. It did serve to pique my interest in this author's work though so I have to say it was worth reading. 3/5 stars

A light read that'll get your mojo going

I picked up this book because it's been forever since I read a holiday themed book. Also, I hoped it would put me in the holiday spirit. It achieved at least one of my two objectives! The three tales in this anthology occur "around" Christmas but that's where the theme ends. Not to say that that's a bad thing! All three stories were fun reads with steamy r-rated action.
Tangled Tinsel is the first tale and my second favorite of this anthology. Two cat shifters find themselves stuck with each other under unusual circumstances. Their first meeting was pretty hot but somewhat anti-climatic as the true reason of why El lures Kyle back to her place comes to light. It is however a nice foreshadowing of things to come! The power-play between the two main characters was quite entertaining. Kind of like good cop vs naughty cop. El's trying to be all professional while Kyle is constantly trying to jump her bones. I'll let you figure out for yourselves how that turns out! Shifter related content was scattered through the story and was a great addition. Believable but not too overdone.

Next up was my favorite out of the three: No Angel. The lead female character's name is Sasha, same as my dog. Does that make me biased? Hmm... perhaps. Regardless, it's a really great read. I actually finished it wishing that it was a full length book! In this story Angels and Demons are a common part of humans' daily lives. Sasha happens to be unknowingly dating one. That is until the s*** hits the fan. Jay gets called back to hell. Although No Angel is only about 100 pages, it's action packed with lovable characters and hot booty time. How Vivi Andrews managed to pack that munch punch into such a short story eludes me.

Last but... yeah, kinda least, was Freeze Line by Moira Robers. I expected great things after having seen this author's name the most over the rest while researching the book. The tale itself was good, I just don't think that it was appropriate for a short story. The sheer size and depth of the world created in Freeze Line was impossible to grasp in less than 100 pages. It left me confused and with too many unanswered questions. Which was disappointing for me, this being the tale that included werewolves. Another huge oversight was that Nadia and Shane didn't get it on until the very end. I expected toe curling goodness in-line with the two previous tales and had to wander around confused for 90% of the story with no sexual distractions. Don't get me wrong, if Free Line was 300 pages I think it would probably be an excellent novel. The premise is original and the characters are charming but 100 pages just didn't cut it.

Winter Wishes is a light read that'll get your mojo going. As for getting you in the "Christmas spirit"? Not so much. But in this case, who cares!? It has variety, great tales and isn't overly complicated. A great read for anyone looking for a nice combination of sex and paranormal without the commitment involved in a full length novel.

When Kyle Branegan spots a female cougar shifter he becomes a slave to her call. He stalks his prey and is ready for some primal sex, but he gets more than he bargained for with El. Eloise Inez Scott is on assignment. She is to protect this sexy cougar by any means necessary.

"Tangled Tinsel" is an exciting sexy romp. Kyle and El are combustible. I could almost feel the electrical charges coming off of these two. I absolutely fell in love with them and her family was hilarious. Actually, there were many times when I found myself laughing during "Tangled Tinsel."

"No Angel" by Vivi Andrews
It's Christmas Eve and Sasha Christian is anxiously awaiting the arrival of her boyfriend. Jay is perfect but lately it seems as if something is bothering him. Sasha's worst fear is that he is going to break up with her. All that changes when Jay gets sucked into Hell. Now, if she wants to save him, she must go to Hell and fight for him.

"No Angel" is a very different kind of story than I am used to. Sasha and Jay live in a society where angels and demons are real. The angels are celebrities and the demons stick to their realm if they know what is good for them. I really enjoyed Sasha and Jay's story, and the world created by Vivi Andrews is very fascinating.

"Freeze Line" by Moira Rogers
An Ice Age has drawn a line among civilization. Above the line, is frozen land that Shane Sullivan has escaped to to try to keep his wolf from claiming control over his mind and body. Magic is quiet above the freeze line, allowing Shane to lead a somewhat normal life, albeit alone. Nadia is a witch. She was kidnapped and taken above the freeze line to be studied and tortured. She escapes but cannot survive in this frozen land without help. Shane discovers Nadia and offers her help, but the longer they are together the more difficult he finds it to remain distant from her. This may not be a problem if he can't get her below the freeze line before the lack of magic kills her.

"Freeze Line" is anything but cold! Shane and Nadia definitely stir up the heat. If I had to be stranded in a frozen wasteland I would love for Shane to be the one to find me. I really love the premise of this story. These two characters both come from two drastically different worlds, they have enough chemistry between them to thaw the ice in "Freeze Line," yet neither can live on each other's land because of their magic.

Winter Wishes features sexy characters full of paranormal goodness. These authors combine a cool combination of out of this world stories grounded by thrilling characters finding love. Winter Wishes has everything your paranormal fantasies can handle sensuous cougar lovin', a demon seeking redemption via an angel's love, and last but not least, a wolf plus a witch equals burning passion.

A great play

This is a play that sneaks up on you. I had the fortune of seeing it before reading it and I'm glad that I did. The writing is fast and furious and Raine does a terrific job immediately enmeshing her characters in the action. Some of the characters sound a bit similar; however, it is a lovely ensemble piece which leaves you asking several questions when the play is over.

The oral son of a snobbish college professor has been raised to be grateful for his erudite hearing family and the benefits it has been to him. But in college he falls in love with forbidden fruit: a deaf woman who communicates with American Sign Language. When the boy falls in love, it is not only with the girl, but with her language and the rich Deaf culture she grew up in. We not have the setting for a perfect Romeo and Juliet type of affair in a completely unique setting. I will be directing it at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf next season.

I did not realize this was the British version. There is an American version that I thought I was buying. Also, this electronic edition does not have the option of choosing "location" or "page numbers". The lack of this option is very debilitating for group reading opportunities. If I had known any of the above, I would not have purchased it.

The most basic foundation necessary for a Urology Rotation. Med Student

This book is good for preparing for the wards and some pimping questions. Its focus is the clinic, not surgery. It is quite basic, but we have to start somewhere and thus if you prepare with this book the week/weekend before a Urology rotation you will have the most basic knowledge to make it through the rotation. If you want to impress on the rotation then read Lange's Smith Urology, but that book is very big and cannot be read in a weekend like SOAP Urology. If you know this book you will at the very least look competent and avoid missing simple pimp questions.
