A Fun Story that Thinks Outside the Pack

I read a lot of paranormal stuff. A LOT!

In fact, I read waaaaaaaay more than I actually review under the principle of 'if you can't say something nice . . .'

I can say a lot of nice things about Pack & Coven!

What I really loved about this story is that is presented a different take on the Werewolf hero. Most alpha wolves in the sea of paranormal romance fiction are snarling, dominating, and demand submission from pack and mate. Most of them could stand a bath and flea dip, too, truth be told.

Harry is different, bath and flea dip issues aside. He's a lone wolf alpha who wants to be left in peace, emerging from his man-wolf cave only to grab the occasional steak and to enjoy the company of BFF Sandie, matronly older proprietor of a local tea room, and her patrons. His desire to remain packless, for which he has a very good reason, is threatened when the local pack alpha female finds herself in need of an new mate and Harry becomes her number one candidate.

When Harry sets out on the run, Sandie comes to his aid, revealing a few secrets of her own in the process. She's a witch who uses the matronly facade to hide from suspecting humans and Weres. Dropping that facade, which transforms her into a smokin' hot babe, and succumbing to her attraction for Harry, could prove to be her undoing.

In Jody Wallace's fascinating and complex universe, there are a few very good reasons why witches and Weres don't mix. No spoilers, but it turned out to be a really fun twist in a genre full of the same old same old. Harry and Sandie/June's romance is hot, full of tension and angst, and takes them through several rounds of a deliciously fun game called 'my alpha is bigger than yours!'

If you're looking for something really fresh and unexpected in the paranormal romance genre, this book won't disappoint.

*Disclaimer - I got a free copy because I asked Jody for it. I've been itching to read some of Jody's titles for a while now. After reading this one, I'll definitely be buying more!

It was really a cute story

Giving this a 3.5 stars - It was really a cute story - but I don't know if it's because I wasn't feeling well, or if I just didn't seem to connect well with the main characters. Well mostly June.

Usually when I read a book I can get their look and voice and everything in my head and read the book as that character - but June just kind of had one of those really .... June Cleaver type attitudes. And I guess it just didn't go well with the way it read in the book.

It was really a cute story though - I liked the way the Witches and Werewolves are connected - but only the Witches know of the Wolves, but the wolves don't know about the witches. Why .. well that's the most interesting part of the story :)

The book starts off with Harry at the small little Tea Room Cafe - not a typical place for a big strong lone wolf to hang out - but he's a lone wolf for a reason - he refuses to belong to a Pack. They killed his mother when he was a kid, and he swore he'd never join a pack, even though he has the Alpha Gene.

Sitting in the same town cafe , Harry has been a regular there for 8 years now. Sadie, the head cook knows exactly how he likes his stakes. Although stakes isn't something usually ordered there, she makes it special just for him. They go to a movie night in town, and hang out at her house. She's just about the best friend a guy could ask for. And best of all, she wasn't a Wolf - If she was only, say 50 years younger, he would be all over her.

But Sadie was an older woman, just like many of the other regulars they hung out with. Harry liked them a lot and considered them good friends.

When Bianca (The Local Pack's Female Alpha) walks into the Cafe with her 2 BFF's, letting Harry know that Bert, her husband was now officially kicked out of the Pack for breaking the law and going to jail. The Pack NEEDS another Alpha Gene to even out the Pack. And if Harry didn't do it, the pack would fade out. Bianca wasn't going to let that happen. She would do anything to keep her pack.

So she gives him until 3:00 to get things in order, but she issues a Lock Down of the state and calls in some help form the nearby packs to help make sure Harry doesn't have a choice but to go to the Pack Bonding Ceremony.

Trying to get away as quickly and quietly as he could, Harry sneaks to his garage (he's a mechanic) And that's where he finds Sadie... at least he thought it was Sadie - it smelt like Sadie, and from a distance, she looked like Sadie - only younger... about 50 years younger..
Enter June - June is Sadie's "Grand-daughter" only deep down, she has a secret. She's a witch, and Sadie isn't who Harry thinks she is.

June helps Harry escape from Bianca and her friends, but Harry can't figure out how they got away.
When they get in the car, Harry passes out. June drives them as far as she could go, then puts a spell over the car. She tells Harry not to drive anymore, she needed to rest. Then she falls into a deep sleep.

Well harry isn't one to believe in magic, and he's definitly not going to sit around in the car while June sleeps while the Pack is hunting them down. So he gets in the drivers seat and takes off.

Pulling over to take a better look/listen around to see if they're being hunted, Harry notices a couple of wolves in human form. But for some reason, they don't recognize Harry, or his sent. How could that be??

it's magic :)

Like I said, before - this was a really cute story, but June was just a little too .... good for this part :) She scolded Harry for using foul language, for thinking unkind thoughts out loud.
It wasn't a PG book - in fact, it their relationship grew pretty quickly, and even though it was forbidden for a Werewolf and a Witch to mate... hey it happens, right :)

So yeah, it was cute and that's what I thought about this book :)

Jerry Apps recalls winters growing up on a farm in central Wisconsin during the latter years of the Depression and through World War II. Before electricity came to this part of Waushara County, farmers milked cows by hand with the light of a kerosene lantern, woodstoves heated the drafty farm homes, and “making wood” was a major part of every winter’s work. The children in Jerry’s rural community walked to a country school that was heated with a woodstove and had no indoor plumbing. Wisconsin winters then were a time of reflection, of planning for next year, and of families drawing together. Jerry describes how winter influenced farm families and suggests that those of us who grow up with harsh northern winters are profoundly affected in ways we often are not aware.

About the Author
Jerry Apps was born and raised on a central Wisconsin farm before electricity, indoor plumbing, and central heating came to the country. He has been a rural his­torian and environmental writer for more than forty years and has published fiction and nonfiction books on many rural topics, including Ringlingville USA, Casper Jaggi: Master Swiss Cheese Maker, Horse-Drawn Days, Old Farm, Garden Wisdom, and Limping through Life for the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. He is a former county extension agent and professor emeritus at the University of Wis­consin College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Jerry and his wife, Ruth, divide their time between their home in Madison and their farm, Roshara, west of Wild Rose.

Great Book!!

I saw Mr. Apps on PBS discussing this book and bought it soon after. This book brings back many memories of my grandfather who was one of the biggest influences in my life. If you ask my wife, it appears I am becoming more like him as the years pass. I find that I have a hard time driving past a piece of downed wood in the forest without stooping to cut it up, hearing his voice in my head saying "boy! That's good wood laying there."
This book should be required reading for all who have been denied the gift of a person who grew up during the age before technology took over. A great read although I do prefer the Gunsmoke radio show over Tarzan. Read the book and you will understand.

Reflections and appreciation of Wisconsin winters!

The Quiet Season caused me to reflect on some of my own childhood memories growing up in Wisconsin in the 1960's. And it made me appreciate the beauty that Wisconsin winters bring to us who live in, or have lived in rural communities throughout the state. Next time I step out into my woods and hear the crows in wintertime I will think of Mr. Apps, and I will do the same when I follow my husband's footsteps through the deep snow.

When I was reading this wonderful volume of winter tales from Jerry Apps childhood in the 1940's and early 1950's during the hot days of the summer just past, I would involuntarily shiver and once or twice found myself checking for snow out my window. It was that captivating for me. Although I grew up about a decade later in a Wisconsin city, I did not appreciate how hard families had to work in order to make the family farm a going concern until I finished this book. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in people or in the lives of midwest farm families before the advent of corporate farming and agricultural factories.

Tax reform, and the relationship between the Citizen and Government is arguably one of the most important issues of our time. With a tax code of more than 75,000 incomprehensible pages, an IRS willing to engage in criminal harassment of political opponents, a Congress that eagerly manipulates the tax code in exchange for political contributions, and an income tax system that no one feels is fair, efficient, or just, there is no question that something drastic needs to be done.

Unfortunately, much of Washington is committed to retaining our antiquated income tax system as the source of their personal enrichment and their political power, and the tax reforms they offer are little more than window dressing and lipstick on a very ugly pig.

Linder and Boortz offer the FairTax as a real alternative to our failing tax system. Simply put, the FairTax would replace our current system of federal income taxation with a single retail sales tax on new goods and services for purchases above the poverty level. Every American would keep their whole paycheck, and pay their taxes when they make their retail purchases. In addition to being much more efficient than our current income tax system (or the alternatives being proposed such as the so-called flat tax), the FairTax will create millions of new jobs, bring trillions of dollars of investment back into the American economy, and remove many of the penalties currently faced by American corporations due to our tax policies.

Who Believes Their Unproven Claims?

Seven points of criticisms on their claims.
1) Can we really say "Goodbye" to the Income Tax and the IRS? Not as long as the Federal government needs money to pay for the laws passed by Congress. The US Constitution had to add the Sixteenth Amendment to allow the Income Tax. Originally the Federal government only taxed alcohol, tobacco, the carriages of the rich, and imports. When the tariffs on imports was raised after the Civil War it helped American manufacturing to prosper but reduced the taxes from imports. The solution was the income tax for those who benefitted from high import tariffs. The idea of a Federal sales tax was obviously rejected. An amendment would be needed for a sales tax.

2) Their claim is that without the Income Tax prices will fall by 23%, and, employees will get all their pay. Can that be done without Federal Wage Controls? Without payments to Social Security (and Medicare) wages should be increased by over 6% (the so-called "Employer's portion"). Will that happen? Who will keep track of employee earnings to credit them for their retirement? Is this a sneak attack on Social Security?

3) Will prices fall by "23%" as they claim? Won't we need Federal Price Controls to make prices drop? If prices fall by 23% then there has to be a 30% sales tax to recover that 23%. 4) How honest are their figures about embedded taxes? That "23%" has to be an average figure, which leads to another problem. If the average price of a new automobile is $23,000 should all new cars have a $23,000 price tag? Common sense should warn you about arguments based on averages, since this is a way to lie with figures (or statistics).

5) They claim that your wages will rise without an income tax (and social security), and prices will fall is a fraud. You can't eat your cake and have it too. This is the biggest lie and fraud that many people find attractive! This tells you something about the intelligence of their believers.

6) Do you really want to pay 30% tax on your electric and heating bill? Or gasoline? What about your local property taxes? Local governments will have to pay this 30% tax or the tax will have to be raised to cover those who do not pay it. They say "education" will not be taxed (but don't define it). Will those who work in education be untaxed? Then this tax must be higher to cover those who are not taxed. That is why there is no detailed budget in the book.

7) Their scheme was rejected by President Bush in 2005. Candidates who backed this plan were defeated in the primaries. Who can be elected to pass this law? You will need another amendment to the US Constitution to allow it. Who will check sales to see that the tax is collected from new items sold as "used"?

I believe I own every book ever published about the Salem Witch Trials, including some that have been out of print for more than a hundred years. Of course, I like some better than I like others, however, Ms. Roach's book is at the top of my list of favorites. There is an introduction leading up to the witch craze and from there, the author documents, on a day-by-day basis, the events that transpired beginning January 1, 1692, through January 14, 1697. In addition to recording events directly pertaining to the witch madness, the author also includes weather conditions taken from journals maintained by Gov. Winthrop et al., baptisms, etc. which gives one a better perspective of life during the witch hunts. There is also an epilogue listing later events pertaining to the Salem trials through October 31, 2001, when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts declared all those accused in 1692 innocent of witchcraft.

Reviewing numerous volumes and voluminous papers to produce a readable chronology is a major accomplishment, and THE SALEM WITCH TRIALS is both a scholarly work and an interesting, informative book. It is also a great reference. For example, if I am writing about the accusations of John and Elizabeth Proctor, I am able to quickly find when they were arrested, who testified against them, etc. Additionally, each chapter contains numerous endnotes and there is an extensive bibliography. In fact, every book I own about the Salem trials-except two-are included in the bibliography and I commend Ms. Roach on her thoroughness.

I highly recommend THE SALEM WITH TRIALS, A DAY-BY-DAY CHRONICLE, to anyone interested in the trials, life in Puritan New England, or the history of witchcraft and magic.

Who needs a time travel spell?

In preparation for my first visit to the famed 'Witch City' I came across Ms. Roach's HUGE volume. I have always been fascinated by the dark history of Salem, Mass (in fact, I did a big project about it in eighth grade) but I wanted to be quite sure I was on the up and up about everything that went on in 1692 and I was sure that a day-by-day chronicle would be just the prescription. I began reading it thinking that I may be bored as it was very detailed but I was anything BUT bored! This book is truly fascinating and informing. Ms. Roach's style of writing really brought me into the court rooms of 1692 Salem and I was better able to understand what happened then. I highly recommend anyone wanting to know more about the Witch Trials of Salem to buy this book.

Toward a Definition of ADD




Q: Can you tell me in brief what I need to know about ADD?

A: I can try. ADD is a neurological syndrome that is usually genetically transmitted. It is characterized by distractibility, impulsivity, and restlessness. In ADD these symptoms are present from childhood on, and with a much greater intensity than in the average person, so that they interfere with everyday functioning. Diagnosis is made primarily by reviewing one's history; there is no foolproof "test" for ADD. Great care must be taken to make an accurate diagnosis and to look for other problems that may occur along with ADD, such as low self-esteem, depression, substance abuse, or family turmoil.

Treatment includes education, structure, coaching, and medication. With treatment, the prognosis is usually good.

Both diagnosis and treatment should always be done under medical supervision. ADD is a tricky diagnosis and the treatment is not always simple. You should never diagnose or treat yourself.

Q: Are there any advantages to having ADD?

A: Yes. There are many.

To the extent that there is such a thing as the ADD personality--and I believe that there is--it has its pluses and its minuses. The pluses are not usually discussed much because books and articles about ADD naturally tend to focus on problems and solutions rather than advantages. But the advantages deserve prominent mention. They include:

• High energy

• Creativity

• Intuitiveness

• Resourcefulness

• Tenacity

• Hardworking, never-say-die approach

• Warmheartedness

• Trusting attitude (sometimes too much so)

• Forgiving attitude (sometimes too much so)

• Sensitivity (often can hurt as well as serve the person)

• Ability to take risks (again, a double-edged sword)

• Flexibility

• Good sense of humor

• Loyalty

Lest the skeptic think this sounds more like the Boy Scouts' oath than a legitimate list of traits, let me hasten to add that not all people with ADD have all these qualities, nor can I prove the scientific validity of the list itself. However, based upon my experience with thousands of individuals with ADD, and based upon my conversations with many other authorities in the field, this list of positive qualities does fairly describe the advantageous side of the ADD personality.

People with ADD do tend to be warm, creative, flexible, loyal, innovative, hardworking, and the rest of the qualities on that list. However, the problems their ADD causes can be so severe that these positive qualities never gain full expression or recognition. The negative qualities can be so toxic and self-defeating that the strengths are wasted.

Once the person gets proper treatment, the negative aspects of ADD recede, and the positive can flourish.

People with ADD remind me of the bumblebee. The bumblebee should not be able to fly. Its body is too big and its wings are too short. Scientists say it should not be able to fly. Aerodynamically, it should be impossible. The physicists agree--the design of the bumblebee is incompatible with flight. Its balance should be all off. So how does the bumblebee fly? We don't know. But it does fly. That much we do know.

Q: Is there a hallmark of ADD, a single core trait that defines it best?

A: In our opinion, yes there is. It is a relative lack of inhibition. People with ADD tend to be more spontaneous than the average person. They speak freely, at times too much so. They think freely, at times creatively, at other times chaotically. They act unpredictably: often even they do not know what they're going to do next. They do not inhibit their responses as stringently as most people do. They often lack the intermediate reflective step between impulse and action. This can be charming and innovative, or it can be annoying and disruptive, depending upon the impulse and the action.

People with ADD neither inhibit nor shape their responses as automatically as those who do not have ADD. This leads, directly or indirectly, to almost all of the other symptoms associated with ADD, including disruptive behavior, impulsivity, restlessness, uneven attention span, disorganization, tactlessness, irritability, impatience, and risk-taking behavior. It also leads to many of the positive qualities of ADD, such as creativity (because creativity depends upon some degree of disinhibition), spontaneity, high energy, and openness (people with ADD do not inhibit responses long enough to close down and become guarded). Most treatment aims to increase inhibition where needed, without imposing unwanted limits.

Q: What is the best definition of "attention deficit disorder"?

A: We do not know exactly what attention deficit disorder is. The most official definition is found in a volume entitled the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association. The first edition of this manual was published in 1952. It has been updated several times since then. Its most recent incarnation, the fourth, was published in 1994. For short, it is called DSM-IV. Here is how DSM-IV defines ADD:

A. Either (1) or (2):

1. Six (or more) of the following symptoms of inattention have persisted for at least six months to a degree that is maladaptive and inconsistent with developmental level:

a. often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities

b. often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities

c. often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly

d. often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions)

e. often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities

f. often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework)

g. often loses things necessary for tasks or activities

h. is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli

i. is often forgetful in daily activities

2. Six (or more) of the following symptoms of hyperactivity (a to f)-impulsivity (g to i) have persisted for at least six months to a degree that is maladaptive and inconsistent with developmental level:

a. often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat

b. often leaves seat in classroom or in other situations in which remaining seated is expected

c. often runs about or climbs excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate (in adolescents or adults, may be limited to subjective feelings of restlessness)

d. often has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly

e. is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor"

f. often talks excessively

g. often blurts out answers before questions have been completed

h. often has difficulty awaiting turn

i. often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games)

B. Some hyperactive-impulsive symptoms that caused impairment were present before age seven years.

C. Some impairment from the symptoms is present in two or more settings (e.g., at school [or work] and at home).

D. There must be clear evidence of clinically significant impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning.

If you have Driven to Distraction, don't waste your money on Answers. Dr. Hallowell directily quotes passages from his own book. It's just more of the same, only phrased as questions and answers. Much of the book is filled with repetition even from chapter to chapter.

The first book to be included in your ADHD library

Dr. Hallowell & Dr. Ratey have written two books that are considered the gold standard of material on the subject of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This book, and its predescessor Driven To Distraction, share equally in providing the basics about the disorder in children, and adults. The format is easy to read and gives people who are new to understanding the disorder an overview of what it feels like to be ADHD. The chapter on Anger, "The gemlike flame", will take you step by step on how the ADD mind processes an incident that results in frustration and temper outbursts. Only from working with hundreds of people could Hallowell & Ratey detail this information in such an understandable format. In fact, this is the book that allowed me to be diagnosed with ADHD as a 36 year old adult, even though I had been diagnosed "hyperactive" as a young child back in the seventies when it was assumed the disorder went away with the onset of puberty!

Asa dog savors time spent with his rambunctious puppy, his thoughts turn to...Bob Dylan. Although the bittersweet text describes how bereft the narratorwould be without his loved one (“If not for you/ Winter would have no spring/Couldn’t hear the robin sing”), Walker—with his palette of nursery blues andgreens and a cast that resembles cuddly plush toys—keeps the mood mostly light.The winter-without-spring reference shows the older dog kicking back on agreen, flower-dotted hill, smiling as his offspring runs after butterflies. Attimes, Dylan’s lyrics force Walker (First Grade, Here I Come!) to slipinto something more existential—a mood that can feel out of step with the waychildren think about the parent-child dynamic. The line “I’d lay awake allnight/ Wait for the mornin’ light” finds Dad by himself on his bed at 4 a.m.,looking up at the moon with an expression of mild anxiety. Walkerillustrates the 1970 Dylan tune with an adorable parent-child canine pair.Using minimal backgrounds and props to keep the focus on the relationship,Walker masterfully conveys emotions in his acrylic illustrations. Over threepages, the text reads, "If not for you // Babe, I couldn't find the door /Couldn't even see the floor / I'd be sad and blue / If not for you," whilethe pictures show a game of hide-and-seek, the parent with paws over eyes, thenseeking, and finally joyously finding the pup. Indeed, the parent's life wouldnot be the same without the little one's exuberance: waking the older dog upwith a trumpet, jumping in rain puddles, catching butterflies, watching theclouds and birds in the sky, and taking imaginary journeys together. And as ifthose weren't enough, the final two spreads spell it out: the parent sitsforlornly on one swing, the adjacent one empty. A turn of the page revealsparent and child gleefully sailing through the air together with the titularphrase underneath. But while this refrain lends itself very well to theparent-loves-child-so-much genre, the rest of the song's lyrics don't always.For instance, "Babe" is not usually an address used with a child.Song lyrics don't always make great children's books, and that's the case here,but the pictures are so poignant that parents could make up their own words andturn this into something greater than it is.
