By looking at the cover of this book, one would think it is a great book to get some ideas from for designing a patio? NOT

The photos are in B&W and are not very good. If I could get my money back, I would, but that's not going to happen.

It was ok

I had high hopes for Brass and Bone, as I've developed a new love for Steampunk. However, my hopes were not realized, unfortunately. The story was just ok. I found myself getting a little bored with it, even though it's only 102 pages long.

The author, Cynthia Gael, obviously has a very imaginative mind. The ideas were good, but I think the storytelling fell short a bit. My biggest issue with the book was the rapid switching between first person narratives. It made the story choppy instead of flowing well. Making that mental switch in my mind lost the thread of the story for me.

Also, for me, the ending was not an ending. Nothing happened, nothing was resolved. Brass and Bone is meant to be the first of a three book series, but I think every book in a series needs to have a definitive ending. Hopefully, the next two will.

Would have been better if they'd finished

Brass and Bone by Cynthia Gael was a pretty good one-third of a story. The only problem is that I was expecting a whole story. A fairly short whole story (I knew the book was only 86 pages) but a whole story nevertheless.

What I got was a decent beginning to something. And then an abrupt "Epilogue". Simon, one of the two point of view characters says that he feels like he's fallen into a "penny dreadful". Fallen into is right. And just as suddenly dropped out of.

Brass and Bone started out as lovely Steampunk. Two secret agents, one clearly a guttersnipe raised above his station, the other a Lady working considerably out of class, stealing secret plans and fantastic machinery for Queen and country from, and for, mad scientists. Airships fly overhead and steam men ply the streets alongside horse-drawn carriages.

Did I mention that Simon, the raised-up guttersnipe, has been in love with Abigail, the Lady of the piece, for years? And that she seems to be totally clueless in the matter?

But in addition to Simon and Abigail, there is a second plot involving Cynara and Henri. Cynara is a witch and Henri is an agent of the Witchfinder General. The Witchfinder General seems to also be a corporation known as WFG, Ltd. A very rich and influential corporation.

There is clearly some backstory about WFG, Ltd. from Gael's previous work, Balefire and Lodestone, and Balefire and Moonstone. But due to the brevity of Brass and Bone, the backstory wasn't in evidence here. There was just enough to tease, but not enough to satisfy.

When the two stories join things both get interesting, and get too involved to wrap up in the 86 pages available.

Escape Rating C-: I liked what I got, but I'm incredibly annoyed. This was really the first 7 chapters of a much longer story. I want that longer story. At least, I want to know when the rest of it is coming out. I expect novellas to have beginnings, middles and ends, not just beginnings. I was just starting to really get into the story when it stopped. The rating would be higher if I could find an announcement anywhere of when the next installment was coming out! Grrrr!

Brilliant

Garcia-Roza has established himself as one of the most exciting authors of mystery novels in contemporary Brazilian literature. This book, originally entitled "Achados e Perdidos", is a testament to his good reputation. From the first page, the reader is drawn into to an all-too-real universe set in the city of Rio de Janeiro without any hope of exit before the final sentence in the book. The story starts with an intoxicated, retired policeman losing his wallet during an outing with his girlfriend, who happens to be a prostitute. The wallet is immediately picked up by a street boy, who from that point on is catapulted into a sequence of events that spirals out of control. The next morning, the girlfriend is found dead, tied to her own bed, and in the scene of the crime the ex-policeman's belt is found. Progressively, more and more unlikely participants slowly get pulled into a tight web where timelines, opportunities, and motives converge and diverge, at the same time. The prose is stylish and deep, and the story never stops surprising. All in all, an excellent book. (These comments apply to the original in the Portuguese language.)

A Trip to Rio

Although I probably will never travel to Rio de Janero, Garcia-Roza makes me feel as if I have been there. His sensual descriptions of the city and its people bring the city to life. The plight of the inner life of a street boy is poignantly realized, recalling the tragedy that unfolded in this year's fine documentary, Bus 174, which was more about the desperation of what it means to be a product of the streets, a sadly common phenomenon of Rio. Espinosa, Garcia-Roza's protagonist, is reminiscent of Inspector Montalbano in Andrea Camilleri's Sicillian series. Both have the same time worn quality, both love their food -- there are very sensuous descriptions of their meals, sometimes hilarious (as in Espinosa's consumption of a Big Mac on the Copacabana), but they both end up with answers to their puzzles and will hopefully expand on their experiences to us, their USA-bound fans.

One senseless crime after another

I defy any reader to see the connection between the very different crimes in this story. Inspector Espinosa is totally at a loss, but that's par for the course. We always have to wait for that blinding flash of insight to visit him, usually in the form of vivid images. Espinosa looks sensible and talks like a cold rationalist, but he's really "a semi-delirious fantasist."

The reader is treated to several shocking murders and assaults (the killer likes to set dramatic scenes), lots of stalking and stake-outs, amusing seductions, a terrifying scene in an elevator, and an amazingly erotic scene of tentative touching.

The contrast between the steamy hot weather and Rio's Holiday decorations is intense. Espinosa's adventures leave him pouring sweat and wondering if he should do some Christmas shopping.

There are lots of fascinating characters: street kids who sleep in cardboard boxes, a street teacher who advises the kids, succulent prostitutes. The chief suspect in one murder is a friend of Espinosa's, a retired cop with underworld connections. He has pretty rough edges, but he's a good guy and ends up helping Espinosa with the investigation. So there's a buddy theme going, as well as a romance between Espinosa and a delectable young woman artist.

I loved this book, as I have all the Inspector Espinosa mysteries so far. They are a feast of good writing, quirky humor, devious plotting and unconventional situations. And Rio makes an exotic setting, with its vibrant street life and the ever-present beach and ocean.

About the Author
Sterna Citron comes from distinguished families on both her paternal and maternal sides. Her late father, Rabbi Eli Chaim Carlebach, was a scholar, writer, and publisher. The Carlebach family was one of the most outstanding rabbinic families of Germany. Her maternal grandfather, Rabbi Shneur Zalman Schneerson, was descended from the founder of Chabad Chasidism, the Baal HaTanya, and from Reb Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev. He was the cousin of the present Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Citron is a teacher at Bais Yaakov High School for Girls in Los Angeles, California, as well as the editor of The Jewish Reader, a magazine for children.

To laugh with the Baal Shem Tov . . .

Why did the Ball Shem Tov laugh? Out of sheer delight in the way G-d had chosen to make His point: In the village of Koznitz, a tragedy has occurred. Reb Shabsai has earned no money whatever this week, and hence there is nothing with which to buy candles or even food for the Sabbath. Dispirited, he goes to the shul to welcome the Sabbath anyway. At home, his wife decides she could at least clean the house -- there may be no food, but the Sabbath Queen could hardly be welcomed in a dirty house! And what happens? While cleaning, she finds a packet of jewelry and money she had hidden away and then lost many years prior. The Sabbath was welcomed that week with both fish and chicken, and everyone shares the joy, including the Baal Shem Tov, who joins the laughter three separate times with Reb Shabsai and his wife. Once again, G-d has provided whatever His people needed.
This first of the 52 stories is typical of the others -- take simple people, in impoverished shtetl conditions, add sizeable doses of great faith, seasoned with joy, and what do you get? Moral lessons for today, well told in 2-3 page stories, together with a biographical note on the storyteller himself -- one of the Chassidic Rebbes who were the original followers of the Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov (1698-1760). The stories are perhaps intended for children -- one a week, perhaps? But Mrs. Citron has done her research -- most of these stories were new to me, even though I've been a fan of Chassidic stories for many years. Some of them will bring tears to your eyes -- we think WE have problems!
The book would have benefited from the inclusion of more information about the Rebbes whose favorite tales she retells -- maybe even some incident from their own persecuted lives and troubled times. Giving us their geneology -- who is whose son, grandson, father-in-law, etc -- is probably of limited interest to a general readership.
Nonetheless, this is a delightful book -- great Bar-Bat Mitzvah gift, too!

The Carlebach Legacy

I was very sourprised to find this real jewel. The selection that Rebbetzin Citron made into the Chasidic world of tales is wonderful and her narrative is clear and concrete. I realy expect that this one will be just the first of more sweet Torah books from the Rebbetzin.
